Am I the only one who doesn't seriously question Billie's ability to write good songs/make a good album? Everyone's so cynical.

Unbelievable. As far as i’m concerned, people very well could be speculating something that someone popped out of their ass to cause controversy, and doubt the very reason why we love this band so much. Remember the whole “Fuck These People” debacle? And how just because it was on a setlist, suddenly people thought it was a song to come out soon? If that didn’t come to pass, why the fuck do people think this 4chan post will? And yes, while RevRad was playing it safe in hindsight, it was a necessary step to show Billie’s growth since rehab, and to say “This is not the end, and there is much more to come.” I thought it was a great album, with a wonderful tour (despite the cliche setlists) that got all of us happy to see Green Day back in action again. I say wait until Green Day actually gives us something to go off of before spouting doom and gloom for the boys.

I think there were 'circumstances' for rev rad too, Billie writing/recording/going through the process completely sober for the first time in... Forever? It must be much more scary to put your heart on the line in this situation. (BTW this is not all aimed at @Beerjeezus) However, I don't think he wrote all of the trilogy badly. It took me a while to get used to the new style, and the first time I heard it I was disappointed, but only because I hadn't expected it, I don't know what I was expecting tbh. I now love the trilogy, as I do all the albums. Shenanigans was another one I had to warm to. They have yet to release one album, or even song, that I have had to remove from my playlist of 'all green day, fbht + longshot' songs. OK, every so often there are some I skip, that's down to my mood on the day and if it's been played 3 times in a row or something (some songs 3 times in a row is just fine!). I'm excited for the new album, whatever form it takes. And based on the ignoring of my previous suggestions/ideas, I appear to be in a minority amongst those posting by not really caring how it sounds (within normal green day sound plus a tweak/experiment here and there). I want it to be true, fun, melodic. If that involves a mix of styles, like a live show does, that's cool. I love and trust them as a band, I will adjust if I need to, I will listen on repeat. If they're happy with it, I know I'll love it!

One thing I really appreciated with RevRad were the lyric videos. They were all really good (except for Ordinary World) and I hope they continue with well made lyrics videos for this album

I know people are worried and the expectations are high but I just hope no one in the GD circle takes a look in here and sees all the negativity around songs they haven’t heard yet. We’re the diehard fans here and I don’t know if anyone has any concept of how hard it is to open yourself up and share your creativity with the world and then get judgment thrown back at you but for sensitive people it’s soul crushing. I know it’s something every artist deals with but personally I don’t know how they do it. I just want to be supportive until there’s something to actually hear and then I might decide I love this or don’t prefer that. Maybe it’s coming from a place of fear but some people seem overly harsh already and that’s a shame because GD rely on fans like us to spread positive vibes.

I love the hey ohs, all the extra stuff, and don't mind the structured setlist. Bring it on! I love GD shows. To call them "lazy" is crazy to me, playing the long and theatrical shows they do with so much energy and involvement of the crowd is no way more "lazy" than bands that play different setlists but just stand there playing through the songs and not much else. It's a different approach but not a lazier approach, there's more to a show than playing as many different songs as possible.

I'm 99,9% sure I've already posted this exact thought a while back but it deserves to be said again: Peacemaker is such a JAM. I would love it if they played around with that kind of sound again!

I haven't been here for quite some time, so I was surprised to read about the rumours of a new album at this point. What also surprises me is the negative tone of the whole discussion. Maybe I missed something, but as far as I know, the initial reaction to RevRad was fairly postive. Reading through this thread, you could get the impression that critics and fans agree that RevRad is a mediocre or lackluster album and I just don't think that's true. Critics liked the album, and so did most of the fans that I know. Music is very subjective so I know that there are various opinions. Yes, RevRad is a typical GD album, but that isn't a bad thing. Not at all. We are indeed very spoiled. GD hasn't really made a bad studio album at all, if you ask me. Sure, some of them are better than others, but even their weakest efforts are still fairly good, compared to the stuff that some other rock bands have put out over the years. Regarding the leak...Well, I don't know. First of all, it is literally impossible to judge the quality of a song based on its title. I'm sorry, I could not care less about the names of the songs. They can just call them a,b,c,d,e,..., and it would not bother me 😂. I also don't really care about the style, as long as it's good! There are good and bad rock songs and there are good and bad pop songs 😂. The problem with rock bands that start making pop music is usually that they make BAD pop music. Look at Paramore though. They showed how such a transition can be successful. So as long as the music is good, I'm gonna be happy! Even though I wouldn't mind if they made another Insomniac-like, agressive punk rock album. Regarding the FOB comparison: I highly doubt that Green Day would EVER make such a step. It always seemed to me as if FOB was just trying to stay relevant and to be played on the radio as much as possible. It just did not seem like a natural or sincere transition but more like a try to appeal to the masses. Why should Green Day make a song like 'Young and Menace'? No one would take them seriously anymore. I just can't picture it. Not at all. So just relax 😃.

So far we have: Denial - "it can't be named Songs For Assholes, that just can't be it" Anger - "i'll be pissed if it sounds like FOB" Bargaining - "the tracklisting looks okay but maybe the leak is wrong about the album being bad" We still have depression and acceptance to go.

An elderly man next to me on the train was listening to Christian's Inferno and I was like Edit: now I've spotted an American Idiot badge and this is cool since no one I speak to in England even knows who they are these days

Yeah, I imagine standing up and saying "my name is X and I'm an alcoholic" can feel awkward and embarrassing and that's what I get from that line. Then as the song ends he's overcome that to accept "how did a life on the wild side ever get so full?" and "I ain't gonna stand in line no more." It's like a journey of self-discovery. I get how at first glance it seems awful but thinking about the deeper meaning, I can see why Billie called it one of the most personal lines he's ever written.

I’ve had enough of GOT Maybe now that the show is ending Billie will finally start teasing the new album 😜

I hope they do more solos on the new record, like Billie’s killer guitar solos throughout the Trilogy, Mike’s epic bass solo on Dirty Rotten Bastards, and most recently, Tré’s drum solo on Bang Bang!!!

Well yeah anyone can have the opinion that Green Day hasn't been as good after 21st CB. This is the first time I'm seeing that treated as if it's a widely accepted truth that like 99% of people believe though lol. Like, after Rev Rad I didn't get an everyone thinks Billie is past it now vibe so I dunno why it suddenly seems that way just because it appears the new album's round the corner. Not criticising anyone for their individual opinion but it's just weird that suddenly seems to be the collective pov.

I remember being disappointed because they did lyric videos for ALMOST the whole album, except for like 4 and its so close to doing all of them haha

Nevermind nose hairs and fillings, I'm amazed at how green his eye looks in that first pic. So bright and beautiful.

Just so I am clear . You are complaining that rumoured song titles aren’t as good as you think they should be ? You are complaining about song titles of songs that you haven’t heard yet or even know to be actually real ? Am I missing something ?

I definitely don't think it's the collective pov; I think it's more so because some people posting in this thread didn't post much during the RevRad era. People who were posting a lot then seemed to like or love it. Anytime I've seen favorite albums lists, here or reddit, I've seen it average in the middle. I think it's the people who didn't care much for it coming back now. The cynicalness annoys me too. People are allowed to have their opinions on albums, but why drag an album you haven't even heard? I tend to avoid album speculation threads for this reason. They tend to devolve into what people personally want and people start criticizing past albums or the band members themselves. It's impossible for a band to make an album that will appeal to everyone. Just look at this thread so far- more like Dookie, no, more like 21CB, less politics, no, more politics, etc. A band should always make the album that they want to make. That's what will lead to quality music. Not everyone will like it, but that doesn't make it a bad album.

I agree about RevRad and think it was safe but I’m guessing they know that and they don’t plan to play it safe this time. They also knew as good as The Longshot songs were it was a side project so all signs so far seem to point to them knowing what they’re doing. I also like Butch’s response to the fan. I think he gets it and will help (or has helped) GD deliver what they want. As long as Billie has a clear vision this time they’ll deliver. I’m also not worried about his songwriting, I think he’ll most likely surprise people with this.
