  1. Thanks to Arica Pelino for her footage and Shayne Stacy for digitizing this classic material. See the caption in the video for more info. This is just a teaser. Arica gave Shayne hours and hours of videotapes of East Bay bands including lots of never before seen Green Day material from her personal collection. With permission she is now sharing her stuff with fans for the first time! I’m starting this thread and will add to it as more stuff gets uploaded. In the meantime enjoy this small backstage clip from the Phoenix Theatre in 1991 and subscribe to Shayne’s channel.

  3. Hoarding is a strong word. She’s not a collector, these are her personal memories. It’s really generous of her to want to share everything now, she by no means had to. It’s been in storage for years and took a long time to go through and digitize.

  4. I'm giving away 6x4 prints from the Coverups and Longshot shows I've photographed because they're cheap and it's Ramadan. If you want some, send me a message letting me know which ones (eg. "C6, LS15") by 7 April. You'll also need to send me your name and address. Choose as many as you want – I do actually need to print at least 500 to get the best price. It doesn't matter if you already have some of my prints. They're great, so why not get more? If you want a bigger print, you're very welcome to ask, but I will have to ask you to pay for the print and postage. This is the price list: https://www.tescophoto.com/photo-prints Otherwise, I'm not expecting any payment, but if you really, really want to, you can donate the cost of your prints and postage to charity or buy me a coffee. And if you're not already following GDA on Instagram and Tumblr, go and do it.

  5. Ah, legendary Not So Silent Night 2011 performance where they were last minute substitute and had to perform as 3-piece. Great show with funny improvisations everywhere (American Idiot solo) and also last time Billie played guitar during Jaded IIRC. Anyways, man was 39 during that night and off from tour. He is 52 now and about to hit the road once again with the most demanding setlist they've done in years. Getting older sucks, but I am so ridiculously happy to see them still perform after all these years. Sure, they might not jump around like they used to and some songs are slowed down and Billie can't hit some notes as effortlessly as he did 15 years ago, but that's just life. Man can still sing, play guitar and pull off awesome show. I wont take that for granted. Billie's vocals peak was definitely in 2009-2011 period. I've seen some recent comments of how Billie's 2004 vocals were better, but I disagree with that. Just listen beginning of this video. Man could sing and he did it so well.

  8. So many good feels from that Anaheim show And Billie, of course, is looking soooooooooo cute. I don't know what it is about this version of blond Billie, but I love it! It suits him really well and he's looking mighty fine. Also, his hair was so floofy at the show it made his head look extremely big

  11. Ok, I knew the song 1981 was about just letting loose like it’s 1981 and I can think of a million reasons why 1981 would be awesome for everyone but then thought of Billie and/or Green Day specifically. If this has been said already I apologize. No time to read all threads now a days. I can think of several but politically 1981 was the year before Reaganism. Personally to him, it was the end of his actual youth as his father died, probably along with a big part of him in September of 1982 (making 1981 his last care free year at the young age of 10.) He also met Mike the following year in 1982 and 1981, August 1st was also the year that MTV launched, eventually a foreshadow to their massive fame which Billie seems to enjoy). Just some random thoughts today. “She’s gonna bang her head like it’s 1981”. Get it. BTW, this was the first song MTV aired on that day. Very appropriate. And made in 1979…

  14. She has audio recordings too, including an early test pressing of Kerplunk and possibly some versions of the songs recorded on the first day that didn’t make the album, including Christie Road with the original lyrics (they re-recorded everything the second day)

  15. It’s not just live footage as well that’ll be shared, there’s some Kerplunk related things that will also see the light of day

  16. Saviors doesn’t feel like a good opener to me, at least on the record. TADIKM fits better and introduces the themes of the record well. It’s also a better song imo.

  24. New interview with Ryan Baxley on the album art and videos: https://www.wired.cz/clanky/the-american-dream-is-killing-me-interview-with-director-ryan-baxley?fbclid=PAAaaTPBVigUomYaGnMnSl3Oxajn5A-LuZ6LqYSK21szkrsf2AYQjjT1Dtg30_aem_AWU3QjkvwEyMOjEtUo3t1uak_QO209GobwS30tTPCAgZp1HzQAWE0NpBxnV6KjCymjI Good read and I particularly liked this insight: “Each video also serves as a way to represent different aspects of the band. “American Dream” is their more artistic, conceptual side. “Look Ma!” shows them as performers and proper rock stars. On the other side, “Dilemma” is their personal, honest side, and “Bobby Sox” finally shows their love for playing music and their love for their fans. So as a whole, you get a broad picture of who the band is at this time in their lives.”

  28. I decided to rearrange the track listing of the album in a way I think works best, mostly because I was bored. I think American Dream could’ve worked as a good intro to the topics that Living in the 20’s talks about. Also, Strange Days could’ve been good to have more towards the end because it kind of suggests that the topics the album brought up previously are indeed here to stay. Goodnight Adeline leads into Fancy Sauce pretty well and having a song with “goodnight” in its title is great to have in the very final tracks. Anyway, here it is: Saviors Look Ma, No Brains! Dilemma One Eyed Bastard The American Dream Is Killing Me Living in the ‘20s Bobby Sox Suzie Chapstick Corvette Summer Coma City 1981 Father to a Son Strange Days Are Here to Stay Goodnight Adeline Fancy Sauce How would you guys arrange the tracks differently, if at all?

  36. bobconrad 1dNo. 6: Green Day at Gilman, 1992. 📝 SHOW NOTES: I saw @GreenDay twice at Gilman in the early ‘90s, both very lively shows. I think the Spitboy photo posted yesterday was from this Green Day show. @galaxychica and I have seen them a handful of times in the past two decades. They’ve been an incredibly consistent and influential band. We are lucky they brought punk rock to the masses; although, I was critical of the major label jump back in the day, Green Day has done nothing but rise to the occasion in so many ways. Their support of their roots and hometown turf is admirable. (Deb, @galaxychica, briefly appears in their East Bay punk documentary.) This pic is about two years before their major label debut. 👉 BACKGROUND on this series: I started in the late ‘80s (very clumsily) developing what would ultimately become a “body of work” of indie, punk and hardcore band photographs. This was back when I did such things and called them such things. Comprising mostly #blackandwhite #35mm film at 400 (Ilford Delta, my friend Brian reminded me), I traveled mostly to Nor. Cal. spots (Gilman, Sac, etc.) but even shot Primus in SJ (my first year of college was at SJSU). I went as far as DC, NYC and, of course, shot a bit in my adopted hometown of Reno. The “body of work” emerged, and some of these images were published (cover photo of Alternative Press, Heckler, zines, etc.), one or two winning an award. I’ve put these online in various locations over the years, but they’ve never been on IG. #bnw_captures #insta_bw #igblacknwhite #bw_photooftheday #35mm #punkrock https://www.instagram.com/p/C4zfe7BOYx8/

  39. It’s so cool to see them out of their comfort zones performing so many songs that aren’t fully ingrained in their muscle memory yet! Mistakes and all! Mike particularly looked like he was having fun playing the new stuff. Looked like a great show and I’m hyped for the tour! I wouldn’t mind a club show in Chicago either 👀.

  40. Funny this song was just at the top thread today. Somehow this song has risen to the top for me. It’s my favorite song to listen to. It may not be the one I want to hear at shows the most, yet but it, more so than others shows a side of them and B’s writing that hasn’t really been done before and it can take him (and therefore me) into his older age. This is a good car song. Yeah they have a bunch of them like MDP but this one hits that GD spot while staying remaining and chill and while for sure at a show I want to lose my shit, I’m listening to them more at home and driving then while knocking you little people on your arses … This song to me might be the not sure how distant Green Day. Just a thought. It’s also just an awesome old old school song that sounds like Billies favorite breaks and progressions from the 50s and 60s and turn them into whatever he wants (all of the boys, Jason too because he does usually write the solos). Kevin did some ghost writing on this album as well btw.

  45. I think it's fine, it's just a particularly high song by Green Day standards. I think it's cool that they'll go ahead and record a song that goes that high for the album even if they know it might not be easy to recreate live rather than limiting the song on the album. It sounds great that way really going to the limit of Billie's vocal range instead of just staying in safer range. The same was said about his slightly dodgy live falsetto with 21st CB but that was also worth it to have it on the album.
    3 points
  46. I was definitely wincing at parts of the new songs, but thought he sounded fine for the older ones. I'm hoping it's just a matter of him getting used to doing them live.
    3 points
  47. Billie always struggled with higher notes, eg with certain 21st CB songs (that album was the first where he pushed himself to sing higher more and to do some falsetto). It's just the upper limit of his vocal range. I don't think he could ever sing very much higher, and I don't think there's anything as high as Goodnight Adeline on their older albums unless it's just the occasional odd high note. He doesn't have a very big vocal range and has always tended to mostly sing comfortably in the middle of it while only occasionally pushing towards to upper or lower limit.
