I loved their performance. To me, songs like Holiday and American Idiot say enough in their lyrics. It must have meant a lot for them to play this kind of gig in the bay area. They killed it and looked to be having fun. If people listen to Holiday and American Idiot and can’t see any political commentary, that’s their issue. Bad Bunny also approached things in a mature way. Didn’t make a message of hate, but instead of unity. Even said “God Bless America” and had the US flag first in the parade, going against people’s perceptions of him as an America-hater. I felt like they both took the high road and I appreciate that kind of maturity in an era of digs and insults that go nowhere and get nothing done.21 points

I can understand if people are upset at the length of the performance, it went quickly and we always want more BUT bear in mind it was a great performance Green Day got a huge amount of publicity and nobody could be unaware of their stance and many of their lyrics are very clear they performed at a show watched by millions which is always highly controlled and causes mass hysteria in the US if anything happens off script they backed the call for supporting unity Billie wore his Spanish necklace very prominently (sorry, I forget what it’s called) they appeared mature and rational in a time of ranting petulance in the US, they definitely have the moral high ground. Honestly they did a great job.18 points

There is an odd angle to this of fans putting all this responsibility on Green Day to do a certain thing. Like others were saying, maybe this was a dream moment for them and they wanted to embrace it and make it a positive memory.17 points

It's not even a question of potential repercussions in my opinion. What good would it have done if they had made a statement? All it would've done is generate press, upset MAGA people, attract a few new fans, and allow people who already like Green Day to pat themselves on the back. Not saying that's what the disappointed people wanted (they're overly optimistic about Green Day's influence, which isn't a bad thing because optimism takes strength in the current climate) but it's all it would've achieved. No-one would have changed their mind. It wouldn't have made anyone's lives better. We wouldn't even be having more discussions about anything that needs to be talked about - we'd just be talking about what Green Day said. That probably would've been about Trump or ICE, who are already getting the attention they deserve. There also would've been people accusing Green Day of being performative and I'd understand that too. I'd like to see Green Day using social media as well as their own shows to raise awareness of issues that aren't being talked about. That would be a lot more impactful than singing 'MAGA agenda' yet again.17 points

Its always like this, people make false hopes out of nothing and get hyped, just do be disappointed in the end, and then blame the origin (the band) Its not the oscars or grammys, its the nfl superbowl, getting badbunny and greenday to play at their show is surprising enough imo, and the boys took full advantage of it by performing with high rock energy (And keep in mind, this was not about greenday, it was about the mvp ceremony in the end)17 points

The way I see it the fact that Bad Bunny performed the show during this time when people, specifically Latino people, are being snatched by ICE, is what makes his performance so significant. He wanted to represent Puerto Rico and he did. And I am speaking as someone who is part Puerto Rican. The point of his show was we cannot be ignored, we won't be silenced, we are human. Plus his big message of love over hate is the most important. He did a great job. I don't listen to his music but there were some certified bops in there I need to add to my rotation. I've been reading all the thoughts about Green Day's performance and while I do wish they threw in some direct jabs to maga or ICE, I'm not surprised it didn't happen. This is a huge event and if they went off script, they'd get fined. It happened with MIA who flipped off the camera during Madonna's set. It caused an outage and a massive fine. And it was a blink and you miss it moment. I'm sure organizers are well aware of where green Day stands and probably had some stipulations for them. Either way I'm always thrilled to see the boys. It was a great performance. Hell, I'm happy they did American Idiot because that songs still shakes conservative folks to their core. And I'm not sure why people are shocked that they got censored....it's the FCC....that's what they do. Who knows maybe Green Day wants to do the half time show some day so they didn't want to jeopardize their chance. I don't really care. I'm just happy I got to see my favorite band at a huge event and they kicked butt. Any performance that gets the masses talking about them again is amazing. Side note: my friend said he overheard a 12 year old and his dad question who green day was. But when they started playing the kid said oh I know this song! I like it! Green Day still resonating with new fans ❣️15 points

I agree with @solongfromthestars, I think even if they had gone up there and just given a political rant for 6 minutes, nothing would have changed, except that we would be patting ourselves in the back for how anti-Trump/anti-ICE our favorite band is. Much less would anything happen because he sings "I'm not a part of the MAGA agenda". I don't see the incomplete songs as self-censorship @Hermione, I think they just tried to make a medley out of some of their most famous songs, that musically made sense, that would allow people to recognize the songs, and that highlighted the power of each song. (And I don't think choosing Holiday over Basket Case for instance, was an unintentional choice). It's not easy to pack a lot in under 5 minutes, to do it right, and to make it sound great. And I think we know how much more political the songs could have been if they had been played in their entirety, because we know those songs by heart and know what was left out. But if you forget about that for a second you realize that what was sung already packs a huge political message. Just like the mere fact that Green Day, with its well documented criticism of Trump and Republicans that came before him, singing on that stage is a political statement. I also don't see how Bad Bunny's set was more powerful? I think his set was great, but he had more time, budget, and staging. But his show was also a medley, none of the songs were sung in their entirety, the lyrics were the original lyrics and the rhythms were the ones from the original songs, a lot of the stage decorations were mimicking his album cover or music videos. He couldn't have sung anything in English because he doesn't have any songs in English. So there was nothing there that we hadn't heard or seen before. So what's the special political statement there? The only thing he said that I thought was quite powerful and that is not straight out of one of his songs (and most American folks seem to have missed it because they missed the keyword in Spanish) was when he said "god bless America" and started mentioning a bunch of countries, he actually said "god bless American, whether it is ("sea" in Spanish) Chile, Argentina...." and went off to list every single country in the whole continent. That was nice to see, since the US has basically appropriated "America" just for themselves. I think perhaps you feel Bad Bunny's set was way more political because you are not as familiar with his music, so having a salsa band playing or these type of things might seem like something extraordinary he hadn't done before? If that is the case, then for people not familiar with Green Day, hearing "don't wanna be an American Idiot" in the super bowl stage might have seemed just as punk. On the other hand, I also don't think that they played it safe not to draw attention from Bad Bunny. I just think they wanted to pack as much power in 5 minutes as they could, end of story. Bad Bunny is the biggest artist in the world right now, and has been a few times before in the last 6 years or so. I don't think there's a lot Green Day could have done that would have deflected the attention from Bad Bunny. As to "why bother if they're not gonna say anything": Because they are musicians. I guess playing at the Super Bowl, and so close to home, must have been super exciting opportunity for them, beyond how much money they would get or what political message they could send. Would someone here not take their dream job just because they cannot wear a "fuck ICE" shirt to work? So yes, maybe it was just to tick a career box, but what's wrong with that? If they were not career driven half of us would probably never heard of them. Probably only @Dingle and some bay area folks would know them15 points

"Information age of hysteria, It's calling out to idiot America" - that line sung into the silence of that big stadium hit on a completely different level. I think they have made their message pretty much clear. It is in their lyrics, it always has been.15 points

Just performing in Spanish and celebrating Latino culture was huge in this climate. When he named every country in South and North America I felt that. He was great15 points

I think people are losing sight of the fact that Green Day GREEN DAY played an opening show at the Super Bowl! That’s huge. The video has over 1.5 m views already. Must have felt amazing to them.14 points
-
Yeah, I assume they wanted to do it because opening the Super Bowl in the Bay Area was meaningful to them, like it was meaningful to play the Oakland Coliseum.14 points
-
Maybe it really was to tick a career box but in a quite positive way. It must be exhilarating to perform before such a big audience and get all the attention. And near their hometown too. Maybe they just enjoyed it…?14 points

I feel we're overthinking this too much. I don't think they had to negotiate for the NFL to let them play AI and Holiday. I think NFL didn't care which songs they played, so long as they were hits that most people would recognize. With how much hype there was about it on the internet, I thought their set was gonna be longer. But given the time constraints, a medley of their hits was the only possible option. And unless I missed something, they only did Good Riddance + AI songs, disregarding other hits like Basket Case and WICA that many people would have also recognized, so they did choose to focus on some very political songs. I too am a bit disappointed by the lack of the MAGA line, but it was a medley, we didn't even get the original line of the song. Already going on stage and singing "don't wanna be an American idiot" in front of that audience is a statement. Just like Bad Bunny singing in Spanish is a statement, regardless of what the lyrics are saying (short run through what his songs were about in the spoiler below, if anyone is curious)13 points

What a crazy concept 😆🤯 But if you put it that way, what’s more important? 1) To get the message of American Idiot and everything they stand for for a broader audience, even if it’s not a complete “fuck you” message they usually come up with. or 2) Refuse to participate because they have to censor some of their stuff, therefore not get the message across broader audience at all. I know they are still super popular and super relevant especially in the United States, and that they still can sell out standiums around the world, but they really aren’t that relevant in the grand scheme of things. We just think they are because we are in this Green Day fan bubble. But ordinary people do not care about them at all. Today was the first time in I heard my work colleagues talking about Green Day and the message they sent, and how cool it was, and that their sole pressence pissed Trump off. And even with this, the conversation we had at work was mostly focus on Bad Bunny. I understand your disappointment. I’m disappointed as well. I just don’t agree with this way of looking at things, and I think it’s much more nuanced.12 points

They played AI. They played Holiday. They even played BOBD, which also can be read as a sign of how bad your mentality can become when your country is broken. They did what they always do. Using their voice on our behalf and telling what's the truth. They didn't need to prove anything. They have always done that. For 30 years. Fucking love this band. Great performance.12 points

"To all the ICE agents out there, wherever you are, quit your sh*tty-ass job. Quit that shitty job you have. Because when this is over — and it will be over at some point in time — Kristi Noem, Stephen Miller, JD Vance, Donald Trump, they’re gonna drop you like a bad f*cking habit. Come on this side of the line.” - February 6th12 points

They played 16 songs, no deep cuts. Will post a full recap once I’ve slept! But it was absolutely a tune up show with a big paycheck for their Super Bowl appearance on Sunday. That said, they had good energy!12 points

My pleasure! It's going to be the weirdest vibe imaginable but I'm a true fan and will share how it shakes out once I'm back. Yes, it's definitely happening but as another poster mentioned, there's no need for publicity as it's (unfortunately) mostly a VIP-only type affair. I don't want to dox myself but I can say I'm attending as media and otherwise would have no shot at getting in.12 points

I have to confess I've not kept up with the thread but I just wanted to say how excited I was to hear Billie scream "Welcome to the Bay! NFL 60!" I'm not from there but how cool is that for him and the guys coming from playing shitty venues feeling like there was possibly no hope to opening the Super Bowl on home soil. Absolutely amazing. I was so proud that was my band (figuratively of course )11 points

Bad Bunny did a great job. It was a huge moment for Latino people and Puerto Rico! And I loved the bit at the end where he named different countries with a message of love.11 points

the boys have literally been speaking out against the government for the past 21 years now, at stadiums, on live TV, etc. the fact that they were even allowed to play a SLIVER of american idiot and holiday at the FUCKING SUPER BOWL is already nuts. the fact that GREEN DAY IS EVEN AT THE SUPER BOWL ALTOGETHER is nuts. who knows what type of shit NFL would've pulled off had they DID speak up? probably wasnt pretty. r/greenday are some of the most unrealistic idiots ive ever seen on earth...11 points

Confirming what I posted is what they played, 100%. It's possible the crowd didn't earn Forever Now as it was pretty tech bro-y for a Green Day show but as I said earlier, the band certainly had quality energy. BJA did rip on Spotify as a sponsor by yelling "yay Napster" and also called FanDuel "OnlyFans" so he was in high spirits haha.11 points

This. Besides the fact that they actually wanted to play it, playing on Superbowl gave them a tremendous amount of exposure. Millions of people heard the lyrics. Maybe it resonated with a lot of them, who will dig deeper on the band and AI album and see where the band stands (and I agree with @solongfromthestars that now would be a perfect time for them to use their social media accounts as a platform). Mostly all the reviews I've read mention what Billie said on that FanDuel gig and that he usually sings "I'm not a part of the MAGA agenda". This as well. It was the time to let a latino talk because latinos are one of the most targeted group in USA right now. Maybe they took the role of conscious white dudes and stepped aside. Billie was also wearing a necklace of the Our Lady of Guadalupe which is the patroness of Latin America. That said, I'm a bit disappointed as well, but I get it.10 points

I've been thinking about this a lot more, and I truly believe one of the reasons they played it safe was to not rock the boat & not interfere with Bad Bunny's performance and what meaning he was trying to get across. Bad Bunny's performance was all focused around unity & love and GD stirring the pot beforehand definitely would have taken away from that. I'm also confident it was to help protect Bad Bunny as it was fairly obvious he had a bulletproof vest on underneath his outfit. So, I take back what I said earlier and I totally understand why they played it safe now. Happy for them that they got to open what was probably a dream for them.10 points

This is an insanely ignorant take. Billie called out Trump by name in that show as he has at countless shows in recent time. Where have you been? 😂 Watch the clip, dude. https://youtube.com/shorts/NrGwAS6gqys?si=LQtwLGyaPgQegJLR10 points

We were all expecting the MAGA agenda line that didn't come but this performance wasn't apolitical. American Idiot and Holiday are political statements themselves and they played these songs on the most watched event of the USA (and I'm surprised NFL let them play these songs). I also wish they did more, but this wasn't nothing10 points
-
There's a time and place for everything. People just demand things nowadays and feel entitled for other people's behaviour. Green Day have been extremely vocal about the issues for ever. They don't need to scream it during the Superbowl opening to prove it to anyone. They performed American Idiot ffs.10 points

Since someone posted the setlist, let me share what they actually played before I crash: 1. American Idiot ("not a part of a MAGA agenda") 2. Holiday ("the representative from Epstein Island has the floor") 3. Know Yr Enemy 4. Blvd. 5. One Eyed Bastard 6. Longview 7. Welcome to Paradise 8. Brain Stew 9. St. Jimmy 10. 21 Guns 11. Minority ("To everyone at ICE, quit your shitty fucking jobs") 12. Basket Case 13. When I Come Around 14. Waiting 15. Jesus of Suburbia ("From Minnesota to the Middle East") 16. Bobby Sox 17. [Encore] Good Riddance10 points

Exactly, there is so much hype. The expectations are so high that GD will never be able to meet them. And they don’t have to, in my opinion. It’s not for musicians to save the world. With their art they can only make it a bit better. Or more bearable.10 points

I think sometimes we’re so deep in the weeds of fandom — and AI has been out and widely acclaimed for so long — that we forget these songs were fairly controversial when they debuted. My parents wouldn’t buy me the album at first (I was 13). I went to a conservative Catholic school and I remember some people saying they were “anti-American British punk.” So it is kind of funny to hear that these songs aren’t a political performance now.9 points

I was on YT now to have a look at the performance and after the reddit shitstorm I expected the worst in the comment section. But on the contrary. Most of the comments are full of praise and actually see the choice of the songs as an act of protest. That’s surprising! And I like it. And: quite a few people seem to have rediscovered them. One goal achieved.9 points

Think of it from a practicality standpoint. You wouldn't expect an employee to start cursing out their boss when the risk of getting fired is all but certain, so why would you expect Green Day to curse out the administration if the chance they'd get their time cut off was all but certain? I'm not saying I didn't want to see the band call out the Trump Administration, but I get why they didn't.9 points

I am keeping my expectations low and I am just excited to see a Green Day performance. I don't think there's any reason to be anxious for this performance. My only hope is that people won't hate on them if the performance doesn't meet people's expectations.9 points

I’ve criticised Green Day for being Sheltered Rich Men in the past, but I personally don’t think it’s a massive deal that they didn’t make this performance political. It would’ve made zero difference to anyone, except perhaps making them slightly richer from all the press, and this was one of the biggest moments of their career. Fair if they wanted to enjoy it without making some performative statement.8 points
