AlissaGoesRAWR Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 It's not a natural sounding edit - you can hear the gaps for a split second, and when the guitar comes back in it's been edited to come back in a split second after the chord has already been hit. So the initial attack sound is missing. I've just taken the isolated guitar track to demonstrate what I mean - the first round of the riff, taken from the intro, is played in full, and as such sounds natural. The second round is from the bridge (the bit in question) and sounds like a sub-standard edit. You'll be able to tell the difference, it's a lot easier to hear without the drums and vocals covering it up. https://soundcloud.com/tomjohnstonemusic/american-edit/s-2eALQ Oh wow, that sounds weird.
Z J Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 I'm starting to think Are We the Waiting coulda been the 4th single off of AI, instead of JOS. Makes more sense for radio. It is probably the most "stadium/arena rock" thing they've done. And the public loves stadium/arena rock (See: Bon Jovi). It is somber but simple and short. The verses are magnificent. I also feel like if it was a single, it would have been more popular and thus making it a staple on the setlist. I think it should be anyway, as the call and response chorus is so natural. If more people knew it, it would be a perfect live song.

Guest Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 Everyone is forgetting Whatsername/Letterbomb here. The two finest GD singles that never were.
Z J Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 It's so awesome live, the first time I saw it just blew my mind. I wish it had a proper ending I knowww it has my favorite beginning of possibly any GD song. If they had written it as a full song, perhaps added a verse, it would have been perfect.
fukingcounterstrike Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 omg this place I haven't been in here in ages I think billie needs to put on weight and become chubby again because he was always better as chubby billie
Z J Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 Everyone is forgetting Whatsername/Letterbomb here. The two finest GD singles that never were. I think it speaks to the strength of the album. But I don't think Letterbomb was a radio friendly, it doesn't have a the pop-melody. Whatsername would have been a smash. Love the slow climb to the finale. Very radio friendly. omg this place I haven't been in here in ages I think billie needs to put on weight and become chubby again because he was always better as chubby billie when he was fat he looked constantly uncomfortable and he sounded strained. See: Live Without Warning.

Spike Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 Everyone is forgetting Whatsername/Letterbomb here. The two finest GD singles that never were. Oh my god this. I still struggle to get my head around the strength of the album, with the exception of She's A Rebel and Extraordinary Girl every song is just a masterclass in how to be fucking amazing.
UNICORN VOMIT Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 I knowww it has my favorite beginning of possibly any GD song. If they had written it as a full song, perhaps added a verse, it would have been perfect. Are you talking about are we the waiting - I can't work it out. If you are that is my favourite start of any song - if I ever got a tattoo - it would be these lyrics.
The Disappearing Boy Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 Oh my god this. I still struggle to get my head around the strength of the album, with the exception of She's A Rebel and Extraordinary Girl every song is just a masterclass in how to be fucking amazing. Yes. Dammit every song off that album needs to be a single!

And both of those are great songs too, IMO.
The Disappearing Boy Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 And both of those are great songs too, IMO. Put them on Nimrod or Warning and they're not too bad, put them on American Idiot and they're not that great.
Spike Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 This is it, they're both damn strong songs, but victims of the album's success. If they were on the trilogy they'd probably be a lot more respected. I still think they should have put Too Much Too Soon on the album rather than She's A Rebel though.

Two fantastic b sides there.
JOE THE X-KID Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 Too much too soon is better than half the stuff on American idiot. Billies vocals on that are something else...

Spike Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 Too much too soon is better than half the stuff on American idiot. Billies vocals on that are something else... It's one of their best songs overall in my opinion. I've always seen it as the Desensitised of AI. Better than most of the songs on the album and full of vitriol. Perfect Green Day.
JOE THE X-KID Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 Something else in a good or bad way? Good, definitely
walking_c0ntradicti0n Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 Too much too soon DEFINITELY should be on AI, Favorite son..probably but it just sounds too much like lazy bones (ik, they made some trilogy songs similar cause of the cigarettes and valentines thing), Shoplifter maybe. Governator i have no idea cause Mike's singing but it's repetitive. and the 50 thousand times they yell HEY in the song gets too fuckin old.

Too Much Too Soon doesn't really fit on AI, as much as I'm loathe to say it. It's one of the few occasions where GD managed to put together a b-side that was better than an album track. Favorite Son is great, and I don't know how you can complain about that and not mention that Dirty Rotten Bastards and Amy both borrow heavily from Shoplifter I do wish Mike had gotten a better track to sing fully, but I'll take what I can get. Something else in a good or bad way? I've literally never heard "something else" being used in a bad way
