Evoluton messed up. Unfortunately the act of shedding your uterine lining does serve a biological purpose, so unless you produce less lining (either on your own naturally, or with a hormonal pill) you're kind of doomed to a life of pain. I do wonder what makes some women have more cramps/heavy periods naturally than others though. Why do some get so lucky? 1 Quote Link to comment

I mean, I could be wrong, but I don't think it works the same way with other species, so one would think it doesn't have to necessarily be like this. I believe it's a hormonal thing, that's the only explanation that comes to mind. Quote Link to comment
Hermione
I guess it's just the way some species have evolved, to release an egg every month and get prepared in case it gets fertilized. Cats on the other hand only release an egg if they have sex and there's an actual possibility of it being fertilized - seems much more sensible! They do still have to put up with being "in heat" though. I just googled about this and apparently the only other animals who menstruate like humans (ie bleeding) are certain apes and monkeys as well as bats and elephant shrews. So lucky us! 2 Quote Link to comment
Beerjeezus
uhm, I don't know I'd probably rather deal with being overly horny once in a while (if that's what being in heat is like ) than with lots of pain and blood. It seems like a lot more fun option. Quote Link to comment
herewegoagain
The shedding (lol) in itself is fair enough, I just don't get why it has to be so painful (and the whole thing just generally tiring) 1 Quote Link to comment

I'd ask what is it good for but I am way too horrified (Seriously, what's the point - I thought the basic idea was that it should go in and out easily & smoothly ) 1 Quote Link to comment

So it's basically a competition thing to make sure that you're the one getting your mate pregnant. "And at that moment, Alissa realized she spent way too much time researching animal species on the Internet..." Sorry, #zooreporter. 1 Quote Link to comment

Now I'my realizing that even though I had to take biology for the last 7 years, they never told us anything detailed about animal reproduction (if I don't count cell division) Quote Link to comment

It's true, but also barbs cause pain and pain causes ovulation (cats don't have spontaneus ovulation, it has to be induced) Sorry for offtop, my vet soul had to speak 1 Quote Link to comment

Which isn't really off-topic, because it goes back to our original discussion — why the fuck do we have to ovulate/shed our uterine lining every month when most humans only get pregnant no more than a few times in a lifetime? We could learn something from cats... minus the barbed penises and pain and all that. I'm actually getting a little bit of cramping this month. I guess I can't complain since my period should stop right before the Green Day concert on Thursday. But damn, this sucks. I don't think I'll ever go off the pill just because I don't want to deal with actual cramps ever again. I've become such a baby. 2 Quote Link to comment
Hermione
Also sorry for OT but Isabella Rossellini's "Green Porno" is a cool series of short films on how different animals mate. It's a weird, funny and sometimes disturbing arty take on it, I found it really interesting and want to take the opportunity to recommend it 2 Quote Link to comment

I've learned so much about breeding programs since reporting on our local zoo and I honestly really enjoy it. It explains why some species are threatened or endangered, when you consider how difficult it is for some of them to get pregnant and replace the animals that humans are causing to die. A lot of animals (like my beloved clownfish, which all are capable of changing sex at any time, or dolphins, which mate for fun with any sex) also dispel the "biology-based" arguments against homosexuality, transgender and transexual people. 3 Quote Link to comment

Yes! Coincidentally that series makes a point of highlighting that, there's one with different animals being turned away from Noah's Ark because they reproduce a different way from one male and one female. The facts of nature trumps ignorance. 2 Quote Link to comment
Starlight
I know this is off topic, but all of this talk about gay and transgender animals reminded me of this time when I was a kid and I discovered that gay cheetahs exist while doing a research paper for school. I excitedly told my Mom about it and she was like "no, only people can be gay. It's a choice and it's a sin" and I was just like "no Mom, gay cheetahs are real and a lot of them mate for life". She was furious. And that's when I learned to question christian "science". 2 1 Quote Link to comment

It's Splash Time
that thing where your period tracker app updates to give a new estimation of when your next one will start... and it's your birthday wouldn't mind so much if I didn't have at least 3 different event within a week of my birthday where I'd rather not be in pain Quote Link to comment

Montclare
Awww... look at us all on the same schedule. Yeah, I think I'm on my 8th Advil today. All week long has been lower back and leg pain. I'm hoping it's due to my period and not something more serious. Quote Link to comment
