  1. I think there's a lot of confusion between production and mixing + mastering around here. Production decisions, imo, let FOAM down - whether that was Butch Walker's doing or Green Day's (or as all evidence seems to point, both). When I say that I mean the creative decisions made in the recording process to realise the songs written, i.e very different sounding guitar tones from previous albums, hand claps, synth sounds etc. This is where I think Revolution Radio is miles ahead of FOAM, with the band producing themselves and choosing to go in a more 'Green Day' direction with a lot of Who influences and massive sounding guitars. From a mixing (+mastering) point of view FOAM sounds great -- much less smashed by limiters during mastering, and things like vocals generally sound more well recorded and have fewer glaring issues with balance and certain harsh frequencies which RevRad suffers from. Personally I have no reason to believe that Butch Walker couldn't produce a more 'Green Day' sounding record if that's what the band wants, although I must admit I'm not super familiar with any of his work outside of FOAM so obviously not a great start. Mainly just hope they go back to a more organic sound, with less compressed drums and bigger guitars.

  2. He told me to fuck off before FOAM when I made a comment about what I hoped the record would be (to be fair - prob not my place to say that to him, but it was pretty direct 😂)

  3. I would definitely put Nimrod as Billie's best pre-AI era. Also, anytime I see any of those duct taped pics, I picture the conversation of, "So what did you do at work today?" "Oh, I duct taped Green Day together. How about you?"

  4. This is a really interesting picture of Billie. I love the double earrings! He's pretty in a different way than he became during AI onward.

  8. He’s making a good choice imo… he doesn’t need to deal with people telling them they didn’t like whatever he just released

  9. Every time someone says that, I think "well that's just a stupid thing to do". It makes them look bad and is kind of a fuck you to the fans. Which is why I don't think that's what they did. I think they liked what they were making at the time and had a lot of fun creating and recording the songs together and that's why they made it

  10. I’m hitting the optimistic point of the Butch walker news… the clips we’ve heard have been short but sound nothing like FOAM. Maybe everyone learned a lesson, and if Butch can just effectively capture new Green Day ideas maybe it will still be a great return to form

  13. I really cannot get these quality critiques on FOAM’s mixing. I do get that the approach is quite different from anything they’ve done before, probably especially when it comes to drums, and with that comes the fact that fans can dislike it (totally fair and to be expected). But if we talk about mixing quality I still think those songs sound way better than anything they’ve published since 21CB. Especially when compared to RevRad. If they have to change direction again with the next record, I surely hope they will not go back to that. IMHO having fresh external inputs in the production and mixing side of things did good to this band, I hope to see that in the future rather then another 10 years of self produced records. Then, do I want the same creative direction they took with FOAM for the next record(s)? Probably not, but that’s all up to the band.

  16. If you think they made the record sound like shit on purpose, not enough 🙃

  17. Here’s what I think. Knowing FOAM was their last album with Warner, they made it sound as shitty as possible (by their standards anyway, as it’s still a pretty good album, just not maximum Green Day). Then in an interview, Billie said, “Maybe we’ll put out another album next year before the tour.” Then of course the pandemic delayed everything. I’m thinking he had all the 1972 songs written and ready to record, but decided to record the 3 singles first (HCTS, Pollyanna, and Holy Toledo) and decided to line this new record up with their 50th birthdays this year!!!

  24. LOL CLAP SCAPEGOAT!!!!!! 😆 P.S. I like the handclaps but maybe not at this excessive level where it’s causing so much division and controversy 😆 and omg I love when they clap back against public opinion 😆 it’s so good/hilarious! 😆 I want Billie to let go of the restraint! It’s so good when he’s saying stuff rather than relying on a clap-scapegoat 😆 I love when shit gets like this… feels like the good ol’ days of pre-pandemic missing the point and fighting and clap-backing on “important” things 😆 👏👏👏👏 let’s go Green Day!

  26. Weird, must be blocked in some countries due to song copyrights issues. It’s the FOAM production brake down from Butch Walker at the LUNA festival. Will try to download and re-upload that bit somewhere, it’s really a unique and super valuable insight over a Green Day song production process.

  27. Awwww we’re back at the stage where one producer is blamed for everything, from mixing to the band’s artistic choices, fun times 🥰 Just leaving this here as a reminder of what the production process for FOAM looked like (starts at 04:09:50), and of the fact that if you don’t like this record or the mixing you can only blame the band and their choices 🙃:

  30. Here is a question , what do you think is Green Day’s best produced albumv Nimrod for me, the guitar tone, the drums all sound perfect. I like the sound of Billie’s voice from this time. The strings also sound great.

  34. I thought I read somewhere Billie saying he never really liked it. The re-recorded musical version gave him a new appreciation for the song but I think he liked the cast version better than his own. He maybe just brought it back on the recent tour because it is one of the hits people want to hear. Personally I love it, especially when it’s done live with the full band. He added a portion of it to the acoustic encore at the end of the RevRad tour and let the audience sing most of it.
