  1. He also directed the first video for Father Of All… the one Billie called chaos at iHeart and that they ended up scrapping. It was the one shot at the Madonna Inn and used all these extras (one of which had tweeted about it at the time and later her tweets were deleted). I would love to see it get leaked someday because it sounds wild. I believe unused footage like this was part of the shoot and why it may have gotten pulled: https://www.instagram.com/p/CUbKhJ4NIDb/?utm_medium=copy_link

  2. Maybe it's something he keeps saying to hype up his crappy videos

  3. You captured my feelings on the matter perfectly! In my opinion, American Idiot, Holiday, and BOBD are the only really good videos Sam Bayer did with Green Day. Oh Love would have been much better with just the band. @jengd he did say that! I guess he retired again and then came back to make another video because he's a Green Day fanboy.

  5. After I posted these photos saying they were from the show at the Red 7 @solongfromthestars reminded me that they're actually from the Mezzanine on 1 November 2011 and showed me some other cool photos from that show that I'm sharing here Setlist: https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/green-day/2011/mezzanine-san-francisco-ca-7bd1a2ec.html

  6. That's one of his best looks and they played 8th Ave. Serenade! If I had a time machine and could go to any show it would definitely be those early trilogy promo shows. I hadn't seen any of these before! I think even one of the Montreux ones above is new to me. Thanks for sharing.

  7. This photo of Billie with Kevin and Jesse Malin was taken at the Tiki Bar (don't remember when)

  8. I did not know that. Father of All is another departure from the typical Green Day sound like Oh Love was. Maybe they didn’t want backlash for an ill-executed video again to cloud the reception of the song. But I bet it’s a super interesting video to see. Omg I want to see this.

  9. Sam Bayer did other videos after AI (My Chemical Romance’s Welcome To The Black Parade & Famous Last Words comes to mind), but he did seem to stop after late 2006. I guess something about ¡Uno! must’ve rekindled his desire to direct like American Idiot did. That or the women in the Oh Love video. P.S. He also directed the video for Kill The DJ for those who were unaware.

  10. Sam Bayer came out of retirement just to make the Oh Love video, so I'm pretty sure it exists to satisfy his desire. It's meant to come across as a famous rock band being backstage with hot girls, as people have always expected famous rock bands to be, which isn't anything new or groundbreaking. That doesn't mean it's problematic, offensive or upsetting in any way. It's just a cliche that could have been done well but, at least in my opinion, wasn't. I wouldn't even say it's aged badly. It was always crap! That said, I do think the band look great in it. I generally dislike everything about Sam Bayer's work (JOS and WMUWSE were too many minutes of my life that I'll never get back), but I do like the set and lighting in the Oh Love video. If only it had been five minutes and three seconds of the band alone in the warehouse. The song is great and it deserves better.

  11. I mean that’s a Green Day Q&A thread not a GDA Q&A thread If you’re gonna backseat mod at least do it right

  12. I agree in all aspects, but I’m still curious what Sam Bayer came up with that it made them think it was too much. They were fully leaning into the sex drugs rocknroll stereotype.

  13. Hi guys, I feel like the Trilogy is a masterpiece and it's so underrated. I love the songs on that albums especially Stray Heart. So today I decided to cover it with myself. What is your favorite song from the Trilogy?

  14. Yeah I agree it does seem very average and out of place compared to a lot of the others. Yeah better late than never! Wish I appreciated it at the time though as would loved to have heard a few of them live, I know they don’t play them often anymore ☹️ Love this ❤️ Sounds so much better live!

  15. I think what they ended up putting out was thrown together at the last minute that’s why it was just a studio performance cut with stock footage. If it was as debauched and hedonistic as Oh Love, I have a feeling I would have hated Sam’s FOAM video for their image. I still think that was all wrong and for them to go back and try to revive that sex, drugs and rock and roll vibe from the Trilogy felt like they were regressing not evolving. Glad that whole era is over it was wrong for them in every way.

  16. Sounds like Billie isn’t all that thrilled about Sam Bayer either What they eventually put out seemed sort of low effort though, the SB one most likely was way more entertaining

  17. Billie with Kut u Up after the Mezzanine Show where they supported Green Day. They also feature in the DVD of "Riding on Vans with Boys" as they toured with GD and Blink 182 at that time. Billie famously branded Chris Cotes, the lead singer in the band (1 November 2011) There's a video of the branding here https://images.app.goo.gl/QtrKTacXA3DDMkEf8

  19. It's solid banger after solid banger! ...Maybe I shouldn't be driving to it I forgot my phone and didn't have anything else to do while The Rumpel™ was in her appointment so I was air drumming to Dos and it made me miss my drum kit and want a new one for the first time in years. I might have to invest in an electronic one when I next get paid. The things this band makes me do

  20. Me and @solongfromthestars were driving along to "Dos" today and omg I'd forgotten what a banger that whole album is!

  21. Y E S THAT was the song that got me hyped for the trilogy. And it's still a banger!

  22. Bang Bang is such a bop and the lyrics are on par with 21st Century Breakdown (my favourite album of all time!) in my opinion. I wasn't that bothered about the tune when it came out but it's really held up and I love it more every time I hear it live. Billie has the stage presence to pull it off.

  23. It's been like that for a while now and we miss it too. We're waiting for Andres to fix it but obviously, everyone has a life outside of GDA and GDC and things come up. The Instagram keeps disappearing for the same (ridiculous) reason as other fan accounts.

  24. I love this! You've captured his expression perfectly. All I've drawn for the last year or more is Pokémon stuff. I should do another Green Day drawing now I've got a tablet.

  25. It's Sam Bayer. I don't think Oh Love was meant to be subversive. Whether it was a focus on the women in power or the men in power, I would still find it super out of place for a Green Day video and not a good fit for the song. We are pattern finders by nature and I think that's what's going on here. You'll read into it what you want to see and that's about it. At the end of the day, it's a dumb, poorly executed video with Green Day trying to be all "cool rock star" and a bunch of Playboy actresses showing off their bodies (nothing wrong with that, it's just not making a statement and doesn't add anything). HCTS was just stupid and boring. I think I'd rather watch Oh Love because at least the band is playing in it. I'm done here. Look at this cute boy.

  26. Maybe yeah it could be argued and sometimes I think so too but generally per consensus vote it comes out as least favorite. It’s not even interesting enough to be actually bad I think that’s part of it. I like your top song selections so happy you’re getting into the Trilogy! It’s amazing! Enjoy

  27. I guess we agree to disagree, then. I don't think it was bold. I think it was a huge mistake to take it in that direction and the result was a trashy, out of place mess that felt like it was trying way too hard. I think the only silver linings are that the band members looked fantastic and, after such a colossal flop, Sam Bayer may have taken some time to reconsider his vision as a director (hopefully). So at least we got this:
