Kids jamming to Green Day

I kinda feel like I have to share this story, because I'm super happy right now. I've been substitute teaching since the beginning of the school year, which has been an adventure. A lot of it is hard, especially dealing with some of the kids, but it can also be really rewarding.

I'm at one of my favorite high schools today, and one of the kids in my class this hour has a guitar with him. Not super unusual, so I don't really mention it. He finishes his work, and goes to the back of the room and takes the guitar out. Again, I'm okay with it, as long as he's not too loud. A few minutes later, I'm walking around the room, and I hear something familiar. He's got an app open that shows him the chords, and he's playing along to 21 Guns

So obviously, I go over to talk to him. He can tell I've recognized the song, so he asks, "do you like Green Day?" And I said, "yeah, they're my favorite band," and his face just lit up, and he showed me what he was working on. I asked if he knew any other songs, and he showed me BoBD, and a bit of Last Night on Earth. Then he asked if I knew any songs, so I showed him Good Riddance, WMUWSE, and a couple of older ones. He was so excited about it. I asked him how long he'd been playing guitar, and he said only since last summer. He said it was hard to get started at first, but after he started listening to Green Day, he wanted to learn all of their songs

It just absolutely blows my mind, and means so much to me as a musician, that there are kids (who were born after Warning came out!) who are still picking up the guitar because of Green Day, that a band that's been around for so much longer than them is inspiring them to learn and make music. Coupled with the Hall of Fame induction, I think it's really starting to sink in to me what an important band Green Day is, in a historical sense.

So yeah, I wanted to share that, because it made me really happy.

Love stories like this. I coached high school lacrosse a few years ago and a bunch of them were into Green Day as well. Makes me love this band even more.

Cool story :) Green Day inspired me to start playing guitar too, I'm 13. And they got me into other bands, before I've listened to them I've listened to pop and pop-rock like Sunrise Avenue, my parents (rock/metal/punk/alternative fans) are happy that I listen to "good" music now

It is a requirement, at the place I take lessons, that any instructor they hire has to be able to teach Green Day. They are the most requested band, by far, to learn songs from. Plus, the place says they like to teach Green Day songs for a number of reasons. Most of them are easy to play, but always with some slight little variances that make it interesting to play. So, the kids have success, but most of the songs are fun and interesting to play. Thus, the kids keep on playing. One of the reasons they got into the hall of fame is because their songs have inspired people of all ages to pick up the guitar, but also to continue playing. I know they did it for me. And, I'm getting a new guitar soon!!!! Can't wait!!!

Great story!!!

Awesome story, thanks for sharing it! It's always really cool to hear that Green Day is still inspiring so many people. In fact, last summer I was a counsler at 4-H camp last year, and I brought my guitar and my Green Day tab books. So while I was out of the cabin, the girls cleaned everything up, and they came across my American Idiot book, and this one shy girl in my cabin, she was about eight or so, telling me she loved Wake Me Up When September Ends. Soo... That night before bed, and the following day, they requested it to be played. It was awesome, so I definitely understand they pride, this is an amazing story. :D

I'm almost 15 and I was born when Warning came out, and Green Day is the reason I started playing guitar. I wanted to practically be the female Billie Joe Armstrong (and i still do). Not only because he's amazingly talented, but I also want to be an inspiration for other kids someday. I want them to follow their dreams like Billie Joe inspires me :)

i've been playing for 5 years and near considered quitting about 3 years back because i could never be the "eddie van halen shred guy" but finding green day really re-lit the spark for playing (also,it was cause of them i found my les paul junior, which is one of my most prized possessions)

The movie That Thing You Do got me into playing music, though it was drums at that time (who doesn't want to be like Shades?). When American Idiot came out, all of my passion and energy went into guitar, mainly because of Jesus of Suburbia.

Been playing ever since.
