American Idiot, Arts Theatre, review: 'uninterrupted chaos'

This Green Day musical has enough wit and warmth to attract a mainstream audience, says Rachel Ward

I posted about this when we went to see it, but the comments disappeared in the upgrade. The show was good, the venue small. Hubby and I sang along the entire time and at the end Aaron Sidwell (Johnny) cried. I cried right along with him and so did my other half. The reviews have been mostly good, but the only review I really care about is the one in my head that says, 'fuck yeah, I'd go see that again!'.

I also love that Michael Mayer came to see the production. I did wonder what he would make of it.

This was so much better than I thought it was going to be! @sara_gd

I thought it was going to be as good as it was! haha. I enjoyed it a lot

I didn't think that the stage being smaller was a problem but I did miss all the images and videos going on behind. And also they made a few changes to the music that I didn't like :P Some second voices weren't there, at the end of Too much too son the "eeii ei..." wasn't too good, the band  messed up the begining of Homecoming... but this is maybe just because I know the AI Broadway album by heart :P

Saw this yesterday and it was brilliant. When it toured and I saw it then it was on a bigger scale but they did a brilliant job in the smaller venue. Would definitely recommend, Aaron Sidwell played Johnny brilliantly.

I've seen this production three times now - going to my fourth (and probably last) one this Sunday. It's a bit of a worlds colliding thing for me too, because I'm a big EastEnders fan and Aaron Sidwell was in it for a bit a while back. He's excellent in the show - it always amazes me how much the actors seem to give of themselves for each show - must be exhausting!!

Comparing it to the Broadway version is interesting (not that I've seen that - just the UK tour when it came to Dublin!) - some things I like better, some I don't. During Whatsername, Johnny reliving some St. Jimmy scenes with him wearing his jacket was a really cool touch. But during Favourite Son, with the television, I kept expecting the aforementioned to actually come on stage at one point but he never did!
