The pin on the back cover is what you see when you turn around the case. it's the end of the stor, what remained of the grenade and when he threw it away. it can be easily related to the story as well. His fight is over. It's awesome that you're writing a dissertation about AI (or Green Day). I am sure a lot of gdcers would be interested in reading it when you finish.
