Green Day Greatest hits VOL 2

T.C

Recommended Posts

Green Day haven't released a GH since International Superhits in 2001 and we all know they have had plenty of success since then.

I think at this stage it's the perfect time for them to release a GH vol. 2

How would you set out the track listing?

I'll go first.

Disc 1

1. Hypothetical new song to promote the album

2. Longview

3. Welcome to Paradise

4. Basket Case

5. She

6. When I Come Around

7. Geek Stink Breath

8. Brain Stew

9. Jaded

10. Hitchin A Ride

11. Nice Guys finish last

12. Redundant

13. Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)

Disc 2

1. American Idiot

2. Warning

3. Minority

4. Waiting

5. Jesus Of Suburbia

6. Holiday

7. Boulevard Of Broken Dreams

8. The Saints Are Coming

9. Wake Me Up When September Ends

10. Know Your Enemy

11. East Jesus Nowhere

12. 21 Guns

13. Hypothetical new single to close the album

I don't think they'd include "The Saints Are Coming".
And while American Idiot wouldn't be track 1, I think it would be interesting if it was and I'd like to hear why you decided to arrange it that way.

I also agree with the omission of the trilogy singles, as there were only a couple from Uno.

There's this little voice in my head saying "where's J.A.R.?" but I know it wouldn't qualify :P

Why would they include songs from the first GH?

Because everyone who releases multiple compilation albums always does.

Well not always. Morrissey is the first one who comes on my mind

I think it would make no sense to leave out tracks from the Trilogy. Okay, maybe it flopped, but that shouldn't be the reason to forget that the albums existed altogether. I think in this case they'd seize the opportunity to promote the Trilogy a bit more, and the compilation would definitely have a few songs off the Trilogy, maybe even the non-single ones?

i think if Green Day were to release another International Superhits, i'd definitely much rather not have songs pre-AI be included. not only would this leave more room for AI-Trilogy songs, it also wouldn't feel repetitive.

at the end of their career, an ultimate IH type release should include songs from the beginning of their musical career to the end, because that'd make sense, but as a pausing point release, it wouldn't seem right.

i do not have the concentration level to make my own playlist, but it would probably include a huge chunk of AI, a few (maybe 8?) songs of 21stCBD & probably a quarter to a third of the Trilogy.

I added AI as the opening track from Disc 2 simply because i wanted to start it off with a bang haha.

Like Brutal Love?

Seriously such fools for not releasing that masterpiece. That definitely could have been a 21 Guns sized hit.

Yes, Brutal Love could be one of the obvious options.

Okay, I'm sort of OCD when it comes to Greatest Hits....they always leave off a handful of big hits, mix up the order of songs, etc. International Superhits did it right, and the next chapter should do it ever better. And by better, like this:

1.I Fought the Law
2.Shoplifter
3.American Idiot
4.Boulevard of the Broken Dreams
5.Holiday
6.Wake Me up When September Ends
7.Jesus of Suburbia
8.The Saints Are Coming
9.Working Class Hero
10.The Simpsons Theme Song
11.Know Your Enemy
12.21 Guns
13.East Jesus Nowhere
14.21st Century Breakdown
15.Last of the American Girls
16.21 Guns (featuring american idiot cast) ((((((((((((((((((
17. When It’s Time
18. Oh Love
19. Kill the DJ
20. Let Yourself Go
21.Stray Heart
22.The Forgotten
23.X-Kid
I could deal with I Fought the Law, Shoplifter and 21 Guns with Cast not being included...all the other must stay.

Well, you'd have to include all of the album singles for AI -> Trilogy, so that takes up 14 tracks (if I remember them all correctly). So then theoretically if it's only one-disc, you have room for maybe 4 more tracks. Two of which could be unreleased.

The singles:

American Idiot

Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Holiday
Wake Me Up When September Ends
Jesus of Suburbia
Know Your Enemy
21 Guns
21st Century Breakdown
East Jesus Nowhere
Last of the American Girls
Oh Love
Let Yourself Go
Stray Heart
X-Kid

There's really no use in creating a wish list because in the end, it would be full of album singles and no obscure tracks.

But if it was titled volume 2 they wouldn't

Who the hell goes to the music store/iTunes/whatever and thinks "hmm I really like this band, I could buy an album of theirs and have 10-15 songs that really express who they are and what they were feeling when they wrote these songs, OR I could buy a greatest hits album and have 10 songs compiled in 5 minutes by some guy at the record company who googled "[insert band here] most popular songs" that literally any pleb on earth has heard before. Yeah, that second one sounds good!"

Great idea, Green Day probably could off another greatest hits ten years after their big revival with American Idiot and all that followed. Though rather than create another to eclipse the original, I'm fully behind the idea of having it in volumes so that the fabulous International Superhits! can still stand on its own. Mine's probably going to look like a lot of others, but here's mine:

  1. American Idiot
  2. Holiday
  3. Boulevard of Broken Dreams
  4. Wake Me Up When September Ends
  5. Jesus of Suburbia
  6. Working Class Hero
  7. Know Your Enemy
  8. East Jesus Nowhere (edit)
  9. 21 Guns
  10. 21st Century Breakdown (edit)
  11. Last of the American Girls (edit)
  12. When It's Time
  13. Oh Love
  14. Kill the DJ
  15. Let Yourself Go
  16. Stray Heart
  17. The Forgotten
  18. X-Kid
  19. I Fought the Law (maybe Shoplifter?)
  20. [insert Epic New Song Here]

Note that I opted to go for the single remixes of the 21st Century Breakdown songs just because it would switch things up, and it would make for easier listening with something as disconnected as a best-of compilation. Though Jesus of Suburbia is kept at it's original length. I think all self-respecting Green Day fans can appreciate the epic scale enough to leave it. Following the trend in the past, maybe open up with a new song as well. I liked PleasedToMeetMe's idea of opening up with a studio version of Cigarettes and Valentines. Something old, something new, it's perfect.

Why would you pick the forgotten over brutal love?

Opinions aside, The Forgotten was a charted single. That was the criteria for International Superhits! - either songs that were proven hits, or songs they were promoting. That being said, I'd be down for a commemorative release of Brutal Love. It'd be something in between albums to help tide us over.

Also, I thought The Simpsons Theme was kind of like a joke song, but it actually DID chart (it peaked higher than "When I Come Around" in Ireland). So I guess that's a "hit".
