10 years of American Idiot

Today marks the 10th anniversary of "American Idiot".

Since it was such a huge album for Green Day and brought in so many fans, I think it'd be cool for us to have a place to share our thoughts about the album, how we got it, the first time we heard through the entire thing and what kind of impact it's had on you.

Share away!

I remember getting it as a gift on my 10th birthday from a long time friend, it was the first CD i ever got.

My reaction was priceless, i was like "what's Green day?" (i knew their songs but not their name...Once again i was 10 haha).

I then played the album and loved it.

Way too difficult to condense what this album means to me. I blogged about it a few months ago here on GDC. Basically it opened the musical and political world to me and gave me an identity. Anywho, if you care to read my thoughts on the record check out my blog:

Part one: http://www.greendaycommunity.org/blog/381/entry-3418-american-idiot-a-decade-later-what-it-meant-to-me-then-and-what-it-still-means-to-me-today-part-one/

Part two: http://www.greendaycommunity.org/blog/381/entry-3419-american-idiot-a-decade-later-what-it-meant-to-me-then-and-what-it-still-means-to-me-today-part-two/

But American Idiot is still that driving force for me. That album gave me an identity 10 years ago, it opened me up to the music world, it gave me the opportunity to fall in love with someone that shared those punk values and it gave me the chance to heal from that heartbreak. Every single day I wear my Rage and Love wristbands that I bought from the Green Day Authority (which is something else I am incredibly grateful for) because I hope someday that someone will notice them and a conversation will start up.

It's more than 13 songs for me. I hear that album and it's me. I wanted to get away from my hometown, fall in love and be somebody. Those three things have happened. But I'm still searching for that other half of me that at the end of the day will, "Give me a long kiss goodnight and everything will be alright."

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY American Idiot!

Cannot believe it's been 10. Where in the world did the time go?

Let's see....Summer of 2005; I heard Boulevard of Broken Dreams on the radio. A few months afterward I bought BIAB, My very own copy of AI, Some t-shirts and all the AI posters they had at Wal-mart (x3). As you can see, to say it was love at first listen is an understatement. :) The very next year I started listening to everything Pre-AI and then that lead to me checking out different bands. And the rest is pretty much history.....

I honestly don't know where I would be without this album. It lead me on a path to discovering new music and breaking out of my shell. It really brings a tear to my eye when I think about how far I've come, because of American Idiot and Green Day. It's the best album in the world IMO, that's for sure. :) :) :)

I'll just copy paste my facebook status.

So, American Idiot is ten years old today. How time flies, right?
Thank you Green Day for such an amazing record. It has helped me through a lot and still does. It acted as an inspiration when I took up bass. It introduced me to the world of Punk Rock. I still remember the day I mastered Jesus of Suburbia on bass. That was the day I felt like a true bassist. Its always a wonderful feeling listening to such a great record. Thank you Green Day. Thank you so fucking much!

Rage and Love.

10 years ago today (please note i wrote this yesterday) an album that changed my life was released. I remember listening to it for the very first time on a pirate disc somebody had got me in the back of the car after getting picked up on a Friday in year 6 meaning I was what 11/12 I'd never heard of the album only the band name from a Friend he said I should listen to the album me not knowing the lyrics at this point in my early fandom mumbled along to the words after the iconic opening guitar riff

"Don't wanna be an American idiot. Don't want a nation under the new mania And can you hear the sound of hysteria? The subliminal mind fuck America."

As I said I mumble along so of course I got a yelled for saying the word "fuck".

The album was played A LOT. So much in fact that I didn't realise that the song homecoming was nearly 8 minutes long up until I bought a real copy because it had worn away from being played so much(it had been scratched from being played to often)

I then remember Rachel(my cousin) buying me Bullet in a bible of eBay. And being wtf ?!? What is this Basket Case and Good Riddance.. These aren't on the album...this is we're it started...

I now own all 11 studio albums

All the live albums of eps

Countless rare acoustic and interview tracks

All of the side project albums.

Bootleg tracks and more

Counting up to over 14,00+ songs in my collection

I also own

3 pairs of converse

Three t shirts

a shit ton of posters

Countless Kerrang and NME and other magazine cutouts some dating back to 1995 for the Longview single

And More.

And best of all I've seen this band live. Playing Dookie and classics such as holiday American idiot and Jesus of suburbia from this album.

Ladies and gentlemen I give you the album that almost never happened the album made me who I am, my music taste what it is and more importantly the album that made me Love Green day

ladies and gentlemen I give you American Idiot.

Happy 10th anniversary American idiot

Happy 10th Anniversary American Idiot!! :D

American Idiot is such an amazing album, my favourite out of all of them! Can't believe it's 10 years already! It was my first album I bought when I was 17.

I literally fell in love with Boulevard of Broken Dreams after the first listen. Then I heard Holiday, American Idiot so I knew I had to get the album and so glad I did. It's the record that made me a fan of Green Day.

It's amazing how much success this album has had! I'm gonna spend the day listening to it :D

Still today, American Idiot remains the one record that gives me the feeling I can go out into the world and change it for the better if only I try hard enough. Green Day have been with me since I was a child and because of them, I've met amazing people, fell in love with fantastic artists, went on unforgettable journeys. They always were my reason to go on. I can't thank these guys often enough, probably especially for this record. Cheesy, I know.

But if there's a climax for perfect, it most certainly is American Idiot.

Just listened to the complete album this morning again. Still amazing. First heard songs of AI in 2011, and then learned there was a band named Green Day. Didn´t know them before. Thanks for the music, guys!

I only picked up the physical CD last month. Is that bad?

This reminds me, AI was the first album I ever purchased. I'd only ever heard songs from it on the radio/had a few of them on a mix CD a friend sent me. It was a big purchase for 14 year old me, I don't remember the exact cost but it was definitely more than $15, which seemed ridiculously extravagant at the time. It was amazing to hold it in my hands though and read the lyric book and all that jazz.

Wonderful wonderful wonderful. :D

My brother had American Idiot and I eventually started to listen to it through him (and learn some explicit words in the process) and then started playing it for myself. Without my brother and this album, I would have never developed the exquisite (if I do say so myself) music taste I have today, or found GDC.

St. Jimmy remains one of my all time favourite songs. - it has to be played LOUD. :runaround:

Also, you've probably already seen this, but look at what Mike posted on his Instagram:

Wow, 10 years, would you look at that. I just started secondary school then, and now all these years later I'm at uni and met lots of awesome people through Green Day's music. American Idiot was the record that made me feel I was not alone, and that it's okay to be who you are, even though it might seem you don't fit in with the rest. Through American Idiot and Green Day I found more albums I loved, more artists that I loved, and I found out I loved going to concerts. Basically, listening to the AI record brings back lots of memories  And yeah, the songs and music and lyrics and everything are just fucking amazing.

Wow, tens years have flown by. I was five years old when my dad brought this record home for me after i begged him to get it. I fell in love with it and they've been my life.

The American idiot lyric booklet actually taught me how to read haha, following the words with the song. It really has been my life, happy and sad to see it grow up

When I heard Jesus Of Suburbia that was it. I was hooked. I learned English, picked up a guitar and pretty much became who I am today. I love how every single line of this album is genius, I could say every word that I know and it wouldn't be enough to describe how amazing and special this album is.

I didn't discover American Idiot until 6 years after its release, but I'm so glad I did. Though, I had heard Boulevard of Broken Dreams previously and listened to 21st Century Breakdown, it was really this album that made me fall in love with Green Day. I pretty much owe who I am today to this album. I discovered it my freshman year of high school and now I'm a freshman in college, so I couldn't imagine what the last almost four years would have been like without Green Day and Anerican Idiot. Every song on it means something to me, and the musical it inspired was a huge part of my life the last couple years. So thank you, Green Day, for this most magical of albums. :)

Green Day quite literally saved my life. American Idiot was the first album I really listened to, ergo it's my favourite.
