Critic reverses his opinion on American Idiot musical 5 years later

I've decided to split this in to its own topic for discussion.

Pretty good read. It definitely does seem like the reviewer has the understanding now, 5 years later, that I felt when I saw it. There were many things to appreciate in the musical. I think a lot of them (such as how great the lyrics were and tied in to the story) may not be as obvious to people who weren't already big fans of the album.

I was always impressed with how diverse the audiences were when I saw the show. Punk teenagers to older adults who had no idea who Green Day were. It's interesting to think about how opinions varied or were similar amongst such a wide array of people.

I gotta say, I have a lot of respect for this guy. Not only because he changed his mind when he saw the beauty of the musical, but he had the balls to admit he was wrong in his opinion.

Great compared to modern pop shit? Definitely. Great compared to other Green Day albums? No way!

Sigh.....let the games begin.... Maybe every thread and club name should be changed to " Why Green Day Sucks or Doesn't Suck......brought to you by people who just like to piss everyone else off with the same posts over and over again".

American Idiot is really just a snapshot of what was happening in a specific segment of the population at a specific moment in American history. A fantastic snapshot, but nothing more. You can't expect to get a happily-ever-after or a significant sense of resolution for your protagonist when all you're seeing is just a small slice of his life. You don't see Johnny get to be 25 or 30 years old and grow up and get a job and a wife and a kid, you see him immortalized as a teen or early 20-something living out a frustrating, angsty journey filled with lots of anger at everything and at nothing in particular. He's not going to stay that way forever, but, as the writer pointed out, giving him a happy ending would take the teeth out of the story. I'm glad this person finally "got" the musical and recanted his horrible review :P

It takes a lot to admit you changed your opinion on something, especially if your job is to critique. Good for him for being open to changing his mind.

Personally, I felt so proud when I saw the musical. I know some people thought it was corny or un-punk rock or whatever, and that's why I thought it was so special. It was the antithesis of what a rock band should be doing, but Green Day did it anyway. And the adaptation was beautifully done.
