In most so called western countries the law would protect the owners of the shops/houses and allow them to install these things. But if I came to the conclusion that this is an appropriate measure to protect my business, I'd have to ask myself what the fuck is wrong with society and why I should participate in this way. That's not how I want to treat my fellow citizens and it should be my responsibility to find another way.

This was an item of discussion on a TV panel show this morning. Christine Hamilton said that they are not spikes, they're studs. Spikes impale, whilst studs merely cause discomfort.
Well that's ok then

As if they need to make the floor more uncomfortable and less suitable as a bed.

I feel like if I were homeless I would seek out these spikes and lay my duvets across them just to prove how hard I am. Or possibly I wouldn't have the energy to waste on being that petty, but I'd like to think the situation wouldn't dampen my spirits to that extent

I'd like to see some direct action, like people coming in the middle of the night to pour cement over the spikes. :)

Yeah, because this justifies vandalism

Or build some solid tents with fluffy beds in front of the stores.

So it's not okay when the property owners take dickish measures to solve their problems, but it is when you do it?

Wouldn't a better use of your time or money be volunteering at or donating to a homeless shelter?

Why not? Is revenge-vandalism more objectionable than treating homeless people like vermin?

The worst one I saw was a bench with those spikes. There was a little meter on the side, so basically you have to pay to sit in a public place.

I saw a photo of that yesterday and wondered if it was real. I don't think it's actually in place anywhere, from googling seems like it was just an idea a design student came up with a few years ago.

Nobody's trying to kill them, dude, they're just making it hard for them to sleep on their property. Which they are perfectly within their rights to do. Is it nice? Not at all, but being mean is not against the law.

I'd have to agree - there's a time for legitimate action through the proper channels, and there's a time for doing what's right regardless of who objects, and when people are being treated like this, I think it's time for the latter.

Man, you're allowed to do whatever you want with your own property. Even if it means making it uncomfortable for people to trespass on it!

If you think spiteful action toward pretentious assholes is dumb then I suppose you're entitled to that opinion. I'd just be amused by the sight of it, is all.

The law is usually only the lowest common denominator in a society to live together. Its content is fluid and can change over the years. If someone is acting like an asshole within the current rules of the law, it doesn't make it right or irrefutable.

Pretty much, yeah. Plenty of KKK offices were eventually closed down after one too many bricks through their windows, sometimes that course of action proves productive.

Women's suffrage in the United States, the Stonewall riots, labor union strikes and occupations of their employers' factories, and draft card burning are just a few examples of movements breaking the law by violating someone else's property rights to contribute to your overall human rights today.

I think it's hilarious you think you can do whatever you want with someone else's property, but they're not afforded the same option.

They did what they wanted with their property, they have the world's attention and now they are upset people find their choice to be disgusting. Am I supposed to feel sympathy for them?

People have a right to exist.  But maybe...just maybe...private business owners would rather not have bums congregating in front of their business and turning away customers.

Nope, just wanted to point out the massive flaw in your logic.

Some people find their choice to be disgusting.  I saw this and my first reaction was, "wow, that's a pretty fucking good idea to keep them away."  Not saying that I think it's right...but it's effective, within the law, and better for business.

I'm not trying to win a debate of sophistry or logic, I am stating my position on a human rights issue which includes my negative attitude toward those who make the problem worse through callous actions.

I'm not trying to make you win or lose anything. I'm pointing out that you're being illogical. There are better ways to express your disagreement with this decision than vandalism.

See my post above. "Vandalism" has contributed to the progress of many rights' movements.
