This is probably heresy of the most blasphemous degree and the ghost of Keith Moon may come an' haunt me and destroy my furniture and what not, but it reminds me of the Who which is always a good thing. Something about the feeling of the song, I don't think I can explain it rationally. It may be that the connotation is caused by the "won't you rain on me tonight" line as it instantly reminds me of the Who. But the song has got this stadion-rock feeling. If it had been on Nimrod or Warning I believe we'd all consider it one of their weakest songs. It's the album that I skip the most songs on...followed by Kerplunk and 1039. The songs just don't appeal to me. They never get stuck in my head, I don't think the lyrics are that relatable. Don't really mind about these (I mean, I love them but not as the rest of the album)... except maybe King For A Day What's special about Nimrod is the fact that's the first album where the band actually tries out new things and different sounds, so yeah, it lacks consistency and might sound a bit like a medley, but I love every song on its own and I'll never get bored of this record. Popular Post Hermione Posted January 6, 2015 Popular Post Share Posted January 6, 2015 I think it's great to analyze lyrics, but there is a difference to me between analyzing what Holiday means and analyzing what Wild One means. There is a line, one that can be tough to draw sometimes, but Wild One is a song that isn't close, because it just makes no sense, there isn't a consistency to what he's saying. Contrast that with explaining the meaning of Brutal Love. The meaning is not obvious, but if you can figure out that he (in my estimation) is talking about his relationship with fans and vice versa, pretty much every word in the song makes sense. That is not what happens with Wild One. You could say well he's talking about this and this here, but then a completely different explanation is required for something else. Songs like Wild One, The Forgotten, and Nuclear Family have unclear meanings and are near impossible to solve with one decent explanation. Songs like Troublemaker, Makeout Party, etc are just ridiculous so defining a meaning for it is useless because they're so outlandish there is very little chance that Billie meant anything by them, and if he did there was plenty of cocaine involved. Obviously not every song has one meaning for everyone, but songs that can't be at least mostly explained by at least one or a few different meanings are just rubbish lyrics. The more convoluded the lyrics, the more convoluded the explanantion has to be. There are songs in the world that are just nonsense (eg I Am The Walrus) but these songs aren't, their meanings are quite clear and so are most of the individual lyrics. There might be the occasional lyric that defies explanation or is deliberately nonsense but otherwise they're just normal songs, just because their meanings aren't totally serious and noble it doesn't mean it isn't worth explaining them. Are you seriously saying you have no idea what any of the songs you mentioned are about or what any of the lines in them mean? Or that the lines I gave an explanation for when asked, "She gave up on Jesus for living on Venus" and "I'm drinking the Kool-Aid, I jumped on the grenade", aren't able to be understood? Like, how is explaining what the well known phrase "drinking the Kool-Aid" means convoluted? Like almost all of Green Day's lyrics they're pretty simple as far as I can see. Expressing that you don't like a song's lyrics or find them nonsensical is one thing but I find it a bit silly for people to be telling others they shouldn't discuss the lyrics of a Green Day song that they're interested in on a Green Day fan forum made for discussing Green Day's music . For people who like the song it's enjoyable and there's no harm in it whether you think the song is worthy of it or not. You seriously crack me up. You have to be the most positive person on the entire planet! I've never really seen the songs as stylistically erratic though - besides Good Riddance, King For A Day, Last Ride In and possibly Walking Alone, they're all pretty much standard Green Day.
