I love writing video treatments and have so many ideas for the trilogy, but I have no film-making or editing skills whatsoever.

Wonder if I can use Barbies and stuffed animals to act something out...

I'm definately doing this! :D I can't wait to get started and see everyone's entries at the end of it all!

Anyone else confused on if it's supposed to be like a music video? Or just a straight up 3-5 minute film based on the lyrics to a song? I'm pretty sure that if you try to upload a video to youtube with the song, it'll get taken down for copyright...

Hey fellow fans!

I am a film maker from Melbourne, Australia. And of course, I'm a huge Green Day fan.

So when I found out about this contest, there was no way I could pass up combining my two favourite passions!

As many of you may know, making a film is rarely a one-man project. It takes collaboration and teamwork. Who better to seek help from than fellow Green Day fans on GDC.

I'm sure creatively-inclined persons know the familiar feeling of hitting a creative 'drought', where you reach a point in time where just hardly any inspiration comes to you. Sadly, I have hit such a stage :( At the moment, no great ideas really jump out at me, and I don't think smoking my inspiration will help much in this regard.

I need YOU Green Day Community! :) Let's brainstorm some ideas to make the very best video!

First item of business: SONG CHOICE

I'm taking this contest to basically mean make a music video for a song (music accompanying a narrative i.e. Jesus of Suburbia), not so much a short film inspired by the song. Please correct me if I'm wrong about this...

With 37 songs to choose from, that's a whole lot of potential ideas. For the purpose of this contest, I believe the best song to choose would be a non-single or a song that doesn't already have an official video for it. Let's show some love for the lesser known songs!

Next, what idea would be represented in this song?
Simply re-enacting what the lyrics say doesn't make for a great video I'm afraid. Subtext is much more enticing.

Any ideas you guys are able to share will be most greatly appreciated. If I ever get to creating a film for this contest, anybody's help will go a long way and credit will definitely be given where it is due.

Since we are all fans from different parts of the world, other forms of collaboration might be a little more difficult. But brainstorming together on the forum will be a HUGE help.

I really look forward to what you guys have to say!

Click "participate" at the bottom, then you'll get more specifics and the official rules. It's near the top of the latter.

I know I'm WAAAY out of touch here, but I've had an idea for a song since it was released but I don't know how to download to my computer YouTube videos.

Could someone help out with a few tips? It's weird...at work when I get on YouTube, if I highlight the title of the video, a pop-up for RealTime Player says "Download this Video" but on my computer at home I don't have that happen...

Any help? Pretty please?

You can try with this: http://keepvid.com/ you just have to enter the link of the video and follow the steps.

If it doesn't work you can type 'download youtube video' on google and there are lots of results. :)

So are we just creating a music video for the song? Cause under the rules, it says the short has to be the length of the song. Short film, or music video?

I reckon I'm going to enter this and have narrowed my choices down to 3. It's so difficult picking a song out of so many greats!

I thought the same thing, it basically sounds like we're making a Stray Heart-style music video for them. The only thing that leads me to believe that that's not the case is that we can choose any song, including ones for which they've already released music videos.

So then what do we do? Cause making a music video is a lot easier, cause all you have to do is making a story line for a song. Where as being INFLUENCED by a song to make a SHORT FILM may be a bit of a challenge...

I just did my own thing. What I thought was best for the song I chose. And even if I don't win, I'm fucking happy with it.

I don't have any other characters to feature in my video  so it will basically just me like in my collab video entries

okay just wanna confirm some things that i didnt come across in the rules maybe im blind lol anyway

- Is this open to people world wide or just the states?

- does the film have to be the exact length of the song or can it be over a bit each way?

- and does the song have to play over the film or what?

From my understanding, the song of your choice has to be playing over the video. Youtube's gonna have a field day trying to take these videos down.

I'm narrowing down my options to:

1. Rusty James

2. Stay the Night

3. Lazy Bones

4. Dirty Rotten Bastards

5. Brutal Love

The concept I have for Dirty Rotten Bastards is easily the best one I have, but I'm worried about song length and keeping people engaged for 6+ minutes.

Yikes!

I've chosen Brutal Love - am finalising my storyline tonight and have cast a friend to play the lead. SO EXCITED to get cracking on this :)
