233 people have died in a fire that swept through a nightclub in southern Brazil, the greatest tragedy of Brazil in the last 50 years

Stop being a smart arse. General Chat is used to talk about "current events and other things worth talking about", and seeing as it is a current event that made international news, it is relevant to the forum.

So tragic. Reminds me of the Stardust nightclub in Dublin in 1981. Thoughts are with the families of the victims.

well sorry for wondering about the fact that this thread will barely reach more than 2 pages before it dies.

There's really no need to be a dick. Yes this might not get very many pages but some people would like to talk about it. I don't see how it bothers you?

And if you continue to be a dick you can be sure to get a warning

Stop Sam.  This forum talks about everything going on in the world.  If  you're not interested, don't comment.  You really haven't been around here long enough to know that, but yes, a lot of us are interested in other goings on in the world besides Green Day.

On topic:  This is really a sad situation.

They were talking about 240 people being dead in the news earlier.

I feel completely sick every time I hear this on the news. It is absolutely tragic. When I started university they made us all go to a fire safety talk in which they showed us a video of a nightclub that caught fire. It was real phone footage and showed people screaming and dying, unable to get out of the building. It's haunted me ever since and this has made it all flood back. If a club caught fire whilst I was there I doubt I'd be able to get out, I can barely find the door usually, never mind if the place was on fire with thousands of panicking drunk students trying to escape. I can't imagine how terrifying it must have been. What a massive massive tragedy.

No, clearly it just comes naturally. Anyway, this is a really tragic situation, and my heart goes out to the victims and their families. This came on the news tonight, and I was really shocked by everything.

Something similar happened in New Jersey (I think) a few years ago here in the US.... the gig was not set up for pyrotechnic displays, the band did one anyway, the place was packed over capacity, and there weren't enough exits (the whole building was a firetrap). A bunch of people died, but not as many as in this. Any links or info as to how it happened?

Well you failed at that and it shows you really don't have a care about things that don't directly affect you. Something like this is rather tragic and sad for all who lost their lives may they rip

Are you talking about the one in Rhode Island? I think Quiet Riot were playing? The club was called the Station.

OH yes, it was RI. I have no clue why I thought it was NJ.

Meh, northeastern states, we're all kind of the same.

I remember clubs tightening WAY up after that with pyro. ALSO- there was a Law and order episode about it (an episode about a nightclub fire that was very much inspired by the actual event. Interesting episode.)
