The Last British Major Music Retailer has gone into administration - it was coming someday but it came too soon

Album sales will be affected by this no doubt about it , sure you can buy music online but a physical copy is better IMO :/

Also : more than 4350 people could lose their jobs :(

Doesn't surprise me - it's been struggling for a while

It's also not that good a retailer

But all the same, support the music industry, and BUY CD'S

HMV isn't the only place to buy a CD. :P There's this thing called Amazon, right...

Here's hoping everything will be going for cheap and I can get myself some sort of games console!

Amazon is probably just as expensive than HMV

Independent shops are the way to go

That's sad. It's one of the places I actually trusted buying from. At least my last purchase from them was the trilogy :)

It hasn't gone into admin yet, it's likely to go into admin tomorrow. If will be saved if they can find a buyer. It's been on the cards for a while though.

Yeah sure ... Whatever :)

Not necessarily.

This was inevitable since Virgin, MVC and Zavvi closed doors in recent years. They thought they could handle a high street monopoly, didn't even try to compete with the online retailers like Play and Amazon. They kept their strategy out of arrogance and look what's happened.

The HMV Group acquisition of Waterstone's a couple years back was just greed. Sure they made some money back when they sold it off again, but that acquisition period resulted in the HMV chains profits being completely offset by the substantial loss by Waterstone's each year and it screwed them in the long run.

This is the best evidence of trying to be a dominant market leader can really backfire if not executed properly.

It's not confirmed yet, the board are just meeting tonight. They might live on or drastically change their business model. Who knows?

But if it does leave I will not have a single sad shred of emotion about it. They've been good value since the recession hit but before that they charged ridiculously overpriced rates as has been said already. In my naive youth I paid €22 for a DVD as a birthday present. The same DVD (that romantic comedy The Holiday, is probably available for €6 now) Yet even with their lower prices now any album or DVD that isn't a popular one is still ridiculously overpriced.

Good riddance!

I always bought all my movies and cds and music/movie paraphernalia at HMV :( I don't want to have to make the trek out to Futureshop or Best Buy or...WalMart. Ugh.

Digital downloads have definitely had an effect. And on demand TV like Netflix has started to make DVDs redundant. They were always going to be fighting a losing battle.

It is true - I've seen plenty of albums at HMV with a similar price to Amazon

I've always found Golden Discs much better value. While they don't have as good a selection, they often have albums for a fiver, or 3 for ten deals.

Not really surprising, I guess stores like HMV just can't compete with online retailers. I've not bought anything in HMV for years, so it doesn't affect me on a personal level, but it's never good to see people lose their jobs. This is the third major retailer in the UK to close in recent weeks, it's not just stores that sell music that are suffering.

I had always held some sentimental attachment to physical copies of albums, but life has undone that now. I had tons of CDs stacking shelves and taking up space in my flat, and really just gathering dust. I donated most of them but a select few to charity shops and that seems to have signified my end to physical music being played in CD players.

I have that too, yet I have 2 out of 3 of the trilogy, and it's not like I crave to have Tre. I never listen to the physical ones.
