¡Uno! - Song meanings

So, can we have a thread to talk about the meanings of the songs? I know everyone has a different view of every song, but there are some that I just don't see what they are about, and I would like to know your opinion.

So, lyrics for Nuclear Family? what do they talk about? I really don't understand them pretty much.

Great thread idea but you could use it for the three albums not only Uno

I know but to keep it short, I don't know, let's see if the admins approve this :P

I think this was being discussed in the lyric threads. But yeah, the only song that doesn't make sense to me off of Uno is Loss of Control.

I love discussing song meanings... great idea for a thread.

Is there a general song meanings thread? I'm not sure if it's necessary to do one for each album...

I tried looking and haven't found one. Maybe this can be the song meanings thread?

Great idea! I was waiting for this kind of thread! :) in the Music section of GDA there are only 2 song meanings for Uno, maybe we can help to complete all the song meanings :)

Isn't nuclear family about the average American family or something

I think it compares the dissolving of the traditional American family to a nuclear explosion, or at least that's the metaphor used to describe it.

I'm guessing Nuclear Family is about living in the moment and having fun. I have no clue what the chorus means though.

Can we state a fact here? i've just read that rusty james are all about the survivors of the old punk rock scene (that includes Green Day for sure) that billie joe grew up to and all about pointing the middle fingers for those who just disappeared on that era.

sorry for the bad english.

Noooo, there are song meanings for all of ¡Uno! on GDA! I know because I did them, haha! Go look! :D

I'll be doing ¡Dos! and ¡Tré! soon, too. I go through all the interviews and then write a good summary.

Yeah, sure! Sometimes it takes us a bit to get everything updated, but we get it done in the end, I guess! Haha

That's right. I also like to think that the reverse counting in the end of the song is the nuclear explosion, which leads to a chain reaction - the trilogy :D

Jacob hit it right on the head there, the breakdown of the modern family, with divorce and other shit taking over from the standard mother father + two kids setup.

Loss Of Control is exactly what it says on the tin

Basically seeing someone from your past and fucking hating them because they're a twat. Not too complicated, Chorus is a bit odd though :P

Is Kill The DJ about DJs or governments?

Neither, it's about radio and tv talk show hosts like Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly filling peoples heads with lies and hate.

Sweet 16 is about Adrienne for sure, so we can start three

Yes, but that's too easy. A song meaning is not necessarily what the song is specifically about from the point of the writer, that'd be boring. We all connect some personal experience to each song that speaks to us, so to make out a meaning of a song that's relevant to all of us we need to find out what universal message the song has. I'm sure Billie Joe gives that quite some thought too when writing, cause obviously all the songs that are probably inspired by Adrienne, touches on alot of different aspects of love.

I think Sweet 16 is about reflecting upon a time that has passed while within a relationship, feeling anxiety about how time seems to have flown by and how the relationship has probably changed character over the years. What once were youthful infatuation has turned into a mature affection and a stable life with kids and so on. But while you on one hand are affraid because the old days are dead and gone, you one the other hand acknowledge that just because a relationship has evolved it's not necessarily worth any less, and the person you are with is still the person you knew back then. Once a sweet sixteen, always a sweet sixteen, still after 10, 20 or 50 years together. So overall I would say it's about accepting where you are now, and not get hung up in the past, but embracing it.

Of course the "DJ" could be used as a metaphor for the people on TV controling the outlet of information, therefore being a very socio-political critic similar to American Idiot. But with the current state of popular music, where the DJ's, the labels, dictate the music taste of the younger generation, and the lack of emphasis on musical talent and quality over appearance and personal life is rather disturbing, I do think "Kill The DJ" is simply about popular music today, and how we like carcass eating vultures will accept anything we are fed. It's two similar perceptions of the song, but I don't think it was meant as a critic on an overly political scale. It is also compared to religious mentality though.

I have a thought on Angel Blue...

Could it possibly be about Billie Joe's 'Blue' Guitar?

You're angel blue
With teenage traces
Angel blue
With pretty faces

Teenage traces suggest the amount of character Billie has given the guitar with stickers all over the years, and some possibly from his 'Teen-Hood'.

Pretty faces describes the amount of stages the guitar has been for example the 1994 stage, 1995 stage, 1997 stage, etc.

Waking up the dead and everything'll be alright

This line suggests the amount of copies he's made of Blue

These are all assumptions but it kinda makes sense to me... add on more if you seem to see a patern! :)
