I'm thinking of offering a yearly subscription to GDC where people can help us out by paying something yearly and in return we remove ads on GDC and maybe offer something else?

We can't really be like the Idiot Club where we give everyone a free shirt or something, because $20 a year isn't really enough for us to offer something free and still have enough left over to really contribute to our server costs.

One thing I was thinking that every 3 or 4 months we offer a giveaway of something decent (maybe a shirt or some other Green Day merch) and everyone who's donated is entered.

Any other thoughts? Good idea? Terrible idea? What can we offer to make it worthwhile?

With a thread title like that Andres should make a pole!

No but seriously, I don't find the ads that annoying and I don't like the idea of paying for GDC.

Is this meant to be in GC?

And yes. It sounds like a good plan to help with server costs.

I appreciate how much you need the donations, but leading with ad-removal for the subscription doesn't seem very appealing. Being totally honest, the offer of something else would tempt me me more, because the ads aren't that intrusive and I certainly don't mind them.

The giveaway for donations is a good idea. :) It'll give people more of an incentive to do it. It's a shame but people generally won't give if they're not gonna get.

It's not a bad idea, although I'm sure a lot of people have the ads removed already just by using Adblocker.

No. Those ads about Russian wives are incredibly useful.

Maybe along with removing ads, the subscribers could have access to more forum features than the free members? Either things could be taken away from the free version, or more things added on with the subscription. Not exactly sure what but that'd be cool. It'd be better than something like a t-shirt, as we'd probably use it more.

So what you're saying is that our ads need to be more obnoxious :P

I just threw $20 out there. We can definitely look at a lower amount. The only thing I want is to make sure enough people to do it at whatever amount to a) actually make a difference to our bills b) pay for the prizes we giveaway

Is this meant to be in GC?

Yeah?

The ads don't bother me in the slightest, I barely notice they're there. If it's purely to cover the price of the adverts then I don't think you should replace them with a subscription fee. I pay for Idiot Club for the one off early entry competitions or presales, the only free gift I got for my $20 subscription was some shitty postcards that I didn't want and I never use the site. That's obviously very different to here, I'd be happy to pay for this place if it was absolutely necessary, but if we're managing to cover the costs with adverts then I'd rather just have them.

But that'd be much more expensive than $20/year.

What else are you thinking of offering?
And will this additional revenue go towards my alimony?
And if I say yes will you reduce the over-sized avatars and multiple lines of location and bring back join dates?
And what are the winning lottery numbers for Saturday?

I'm not annoyed by the ads, but I'm not against the yearly subscription, unless the price is kind of ridiculous.

Some do, but many don't.

I feel like the people who care enough to pay $20 already have Adblocker, and those that don't have Adblocker don't really mind ads.

The goal of this whole thing isn't to remove ads, but to find a way to help pay for the costs of the site.

That's what I'm saying, offering a way to remove ads isn't the way to do it.

If it's 20, and really 20, and not 20+ 1000000$ shipping, I'm all for it. GDC has expenses, and I'd feel good helping out.
(But not now, I'm broke)

I get really creepy and depressing Ads on here.

Spoiler

But nah, probably wouldn't want to pay $20 just to remove them. I think you should just ask for donations.

So everyone is against paying a mere $20/year to help support GDC? The place where a lot of us have met life-long friends and the place where we get to chat about our favorite band? This place has done nothing but good to all of us and you all scoff at the possibility of dishing out $20 to keep using it/support it? That sickens me.

You should just ask for donations; I'm sure quite a few people would be willing to contribute. Subscriptions are eh in my opinion...especially for fan site. You could simple set up a PayPal or something similar, right?
