I'm not an Indian, but I am a British Pakistani and the culture in the two countries is similar enough for me to make a judgement.

Much of the Asian world, not just India, is made up highly conservative societies. Relationships betwen the sexes and a good understanding of sexuality are poor, especially amongst the less educated. This in itself is NOT responsible for high rape and sexual assault cases. However, coupled with a media that really doesn't portray women as anything but sex objects makes for disastrous, tragic consequences. Take Bollywood, for example. As much as I love the odd Indian film, almost all of them are romantic comedies, often with beautiful, provocative leading ladies. It is way too oversexualised  by western standards at times, to the point that it comes across as rather naive. Of course, such things exist all over the world and don't do much harm either. Yet, for a certain class of men in countries like India, this media form is the only way they are able to understand the opposite sex because of their otherwise extremely conservative upbringing. As a result, they have absolutely no clue how to deal with women. I've been to Pakistan many times, and as much as I love going to see my family if you're a young female, even if you're with people you trust, you'll often get stared at or occasionally get a lewd comment thrown you're way. That's the best case scenario and it happens a lot. Naturally, then, a disgusting amount of rape cases follow. I imagine India's the same.

What I'm trying to say is that as well as toughening up punishments for rapists, there need to be a huge cultural shift in terms of the perception of women by men and sexuality in order to reduce these kind of cases. It's great to see the Indians stand up for such a cause.

I don't believe in capital punishment, but when you hear stories like this, you understand why a lot of people do. Ten years is a fucking joke, in some countries people get double that for comitting fraud. Rape is a heinous, disgusting crime that should carry a life sentence, and when I say life, I mean life. No minimum sentence bullshit, these people should die in prison, hopefully after a long, tortuous and humiliating existence in a cold and dark cell.
