Authorities in Connecticut responded to a mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Friday morning, the local NBC station reports.

Police reported 27 deaths, including 18 dead children and others wounded, according to the Associated Press.

One gunman is dead, authorities told ABC News. Two guns were recovered from the shooter, according to CNN.

Disgusting. Shooter was reportedly a parent. 'Tragedy' is the understatement of the year, this is just something else.

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) -- An official with knowledge of a shooting at a Connecticut elementary school says 27 people are dead, including 18 children.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is still under way.
Another official, speaking on condition of anonymity for the same reason, says the gunman is among the dead.
The killings happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, about 60 miles northeast of New York City.
State police say Newtown police called them around 9:40 a.m. A SWAT team was among the throngs of police to respond.
Photos from the scene showed young students -- some crying, others looking visibly frightened -- being escorted by adults through a parking lot in a line, hands on each other's shoulders.

Absolutely disgusting. I'm literally sitting here in tears. 18 fucking children are dead, plus the remaining school workers or other various adults. Hope the shooter has a nice, slow rot in hell.

Whoops, opened the same thread after this one was posted.

Absolutely awful and disgusting. What fucking possesses someone to rationalize shooting at a bunch of children? Sickening.

America needs to ban guns. It's just another shootinf after another. It's not rocket science.

Wasn't there just another shooting on Tuesday? This is absolutely ridiculous. There's so much evil in the world, I think it's about time that the US makes an attempt to keep these evils from such easy access to firearms.  :ermm:

It kind of is. Americans like their guns, and democracy means a leader that is in favour of banning guns probably isn't a leader that's getting voted in. What's more actually putting the ban in effect is what's hard. Concessions would have to be made such as for hunting rifles etc, loopholes would be found, black markets would well up...

What I'm wondering is if this is really an issue of security, which I don't think it is. A guy rings the bell, the receptionist recognises the parent, parent comes in, shoots and puts mask on. Not the system to blame from what I'm gathering.

The world is a sick, sick place.  My thoughts are with the families of the wounded or killed.

Does anyone know if it's been reported anywhere on the status of the student? I haven't heard if he was injured/killed or anything.

That's 18 parents that have to bury their young children for Christmas. I fucking hate people.

The main shooter was killed I believe.

I'm not sure that "shoots up" is an entirely tasteful choice of words for the title. I know some people have become a bit desensitised by movies and computer games or whatever, but >.<

How mentally sick can a human being be to shoot innocent children?

This is disgusting and makes me sick. My heart goes out to the children that never really got to live their lives and especially the families that now are left with huge gaps that never can be filled.

Fucking hell, I can't even...

Children, for God's sake. Fuck. I mean, you can't even attempt to understand why somebody would do this sort of thing to a group of unsuspecting adults, but to do it to KIDS? It's absolutely beyond belief. Beyond all reason.

Knee jerk reactions like they should ban all guns are stupid, imo. It's not as simple as if you buy a gun, you murder children. If you're as sick as these killers then it really won't matter whether you're buying a gun at the supermarket or through the black market.

I've been watching this on the news off and on all day.  It's absolutely repulsive.  All school shootings are absolutely horrible, but an ELEMENTARY school?  Disgusting.

"Sandy Hook Elementary School teaches children from kindergarten through fourth grade - roughly ages 5 to 10."

This just makes me sick. I know age doesn't make death any less tragic, but they were so young....

this is just tragic! my heart goes out to the families

it just goes to show that there's no place that's truly safe, last week or earlier in the week it was a shopping mall and today it's an elementary school! what has this country come to!

America has a serious problem second mass shooting this year after Aurora. Absoluly insane. Oh and this argument some americans use the whole right to bare arms thing in your constitution. That constitution was written up during the British invasion where a right to bare arms was about protecting your family and your country and when things like automatic weapons didnt exsist. Its out of date and redundant in this day in age when weapons are now so powerful yet apparently every joe smuck can own one. Ridiculous. Feel so freaking sorry for those families  a week or so before christmas.

It's the fact that you leave your child in a place for 6 or 7 hours in a day in the belief that you can pick them up at the end of the day... it's so perverse it actually beggars belief.

Why are guns legal in America?

because of the stupid 2nd amendment of our constitution... i personally thing before if u want to own a gun, you should go through MULTIPLE  mental health and criminal check screenings. *if it's a civilian owning one* and also i think only cops and government personnel should only own a gun

ON THE OTHERHAND, my heart goes out to the families of the dead children/staff/teachers.

He was the parent of a student. I'm curious as to if his kid was in school and had to witness his father shooting everyone...

Can this thread not be turned into a "this would not have happened if..." circle jerk? Please?

And that goes beyond just gun laws, that goes for anything else someone wants to propose as an arm chair security expert, just like the whole "movie theaters should have metal detectors" line after Aurora, or anything relating to better psychiatric care. Just shut up for a minute and admit it: you don't know.

I don't have an answer for this. I think it's fucking sad that there aren't places that can be taken for granted as safe, especially for young children. And it's likewise fucking sad that save from turning every school, mall, and public place in America into a fortress, which is not functionally possible anyway, there is no way to ever be sure this would be the last time, as much as everyone wants it to be the last time.

To my knowledge and the years i've been alive 2012 has been the worst year for shootings. what is this world coming to?!?!?!? I still honor those in the colorado DKR shooting and this is just as bad if not worse. My heart goes out to the people who lost their lives and their families and friends! This is just a disgrace of the human race!

Oh, I didn't think about it like that. I was having trouble digesting the fact that someone with a young child that age could even do that.

That's awful! :( And an elementary school? That's the last place you'd expect a shooting. No one with an agenda will go to an elementary school to prove a political or otherwise point or to pay revenge to whatever people might have done wrong, they're innocent children who I don't think can do anything to trigger a shooting? Shootings are bad enough as it is but I cannot wrap my mind around why, given someone has the desire to be a mass murderer, they would choose an elementary school.
