Because I couldn't find a thread about it, nor could I find a (recent) sports-in-general thread to post in. No idea if there's any interest for a thread like this, but time will tell.

So I recently took up rowing and I love it, wondering if anyone else rows as well?

The title is temporary, feel free to come up with a better alternative.

I know it's not quite the same, but I used to canoe a lot, and most of my family are very involved in it :P

Maybe a general boats 'n' paddles thread?

Shit, can't have that happen :P Well, let me do some brainstorming. "Rowing and canoeing" isn't very catchy.

And "Water Sports" implies something else altogether :creep:

There's really no good name I can think of, haha.

Where do you row, out of interest?

Do you mean rowing rowing? As in 8s and stuff? Because if so, I'd love to try, but sadly do not row. Not sure the river here is wide enough ha.

I dragon-boat though, which is pretty neat.

How do you mean? Well it's like a student rowing club, but it's not the club from university. There's two in my city and we're the best, obviously.

Yeah that. Though I didn't make the 8 so I gotta row in a C4, which is like the biggest heaviest slowest boat ever, boooooooo :(

and I had no idea what that is but I looked it up on google images and wow it looks like a colourful modern viking contest, amazing

Oh, I just assumed it was through a university. I know a couple of people who row for Trinity :P

My mum does dragon boating. It's like a charity thing or something.

At least you're rowing though, right? What side are you on?

It's the best. They have these huge competitions in Southern Asia/Oceania, and it's on the way to becoming an Olympic sport!

Nope, I don't think our univeristy has its own rowing team. It's not really a big thing to have teams actually from university. Ah I hate this because I want to explain some more, but in order to do so I have to explain tons of other things I know I can't explain because I don't have the right words for it  It's basically a club that's intended for university and college students.

Yeah, I'm not complaining, I got very close as well so now I'm on the topC4 so we get the best coaches and whatnot. :P
I prefer port (which is actually the thing where your oar is on the right side if you do sweep (the kind where you have one oar, sculling is the other kind. Hope I'm not being patronizing? I just know that before I started I knew nothing about the terminology  ) because port and starboard is from the POV of the cox), but that's because when I ran for the 8 I was mostly put on port so I got used to that, but our coaches want us to be equally good at each side so I guess in a month or so I'll be used to both port and starboard.

Cool! I must watch a video of it sometimes, the photos look really cool

Well, I guess I'll talk a bit about canoeing/kayaking then :P

From between the ages of about 9-13 I played canoe polo. I was actually pretty good, I won the All-Ireland's twice, once as captain. But I had to give it up, no time with school and all.

My two brothers and two sisters are mad into canoe and kayak slalom now. They do loads of events and competitions, and travelled across Europe doing courses this summer. My sisters stand a very good chance of representing Ireland in the Olympics some day :)

Oh yeah, and we have Olympic athletes over at our house for dinner pretty regularly :P

Sculling is crazy. Too much weight. :P But no, I understand. Nobody knows anything about dragon-boating, so I have to tell them everything all the time.

I like boats with motors. Paddling hurts my arms, although sitting in a canoe being paddled for me is quite nice.

I haven't kayaked since August, though. My friend pushed my kayak into an abyss of spiders and I haven't touched my paddle since. :P

I was in North Wales earlier this week and I went kayaking for the first time. I didn't fall in (which is a miracle, my gross motor skills are atrocious) but it did take me a while to get hold of rowing in a straight line properly. Anyway it was pretty cool in the end. My biology group had a few races and played game of 'water football'.

Who knows :) If I still want to by that time, in the 8 is a crazy training regime. Now it's still 6 trainings a week and that's what I do anyway, but as the season goes on it becomes 8 a week which is crazy. And training in general is harder because your goal is much higher. But yeah, it's still on, as long as temperatures are above 1 degrees centigrade you can go on the water. I think next week is the last match on water and after that the first one's in February.

How do you mean, too much weight?

Oh wow that looks so funny  Like a giant ass canoe with tons of people

Good thing you don't "paddle" when rowing and also good thing we totally overtook the silly sailboats because they don't do anything without help from the wind :P

so I'm going to correct myself and change "port" to "stroke side" and "starboard" to "bow side" because fuck it is annoying how all the terms are different in Dutch and I have to use inconsistent wikis to try and translate everything and everything is confusing. though I'm still not sure which set is the best to use stupid languages everywhere.

Too much weight as in too much to do at once. One oar is enough, hahaha.

Ahhh okay  I've never done it but it does seem like a lot to focus on at the same time.

Ahh our first year's womens 8 (the one I tried out for) did great at NKIR! (indoor rowing, doing a 2k on an ergometer). Still have to wait for the third heat to finish to see if they've won, but they're the fastest of the first two heats and I'm so proud of them! :D And I totally get why I didn't make it, there's no way I could've rowed the times they do on average.

Jesus Christ one of the ladies from another club is going fast though! :o
