I am in shock that someone can actually spew this bullshit. It is scary and shocking that so many high profile politicians actually are allowed to say things like this.

Read article:

Rep. Todd Akin, the Republican nominee for Senate in Missouri who is running against Sen. Claire McCaskill, justified his opposition to abortion rights even in case of rape with a claim that victims of “legitimate rape” have unnamed biological defenses that prevent pregnancy.

“First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV in an interview Sunday. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

Akin said that even in the worst-case scenario — when the supposed natural protections against unwanted pregnancy fail — abortion should still not be a legal option for the rape victim.

“Let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work, or something,” Akin said. “I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.”

Akin is perhaps the boldest among a crop of conservative 2012 nominees who could hamper GOP efforts to take back the Senate in the fall. Akin has called for an end to the school lunch programme and a total ban on the morning after pill.

His claim about “legitimate” types of rape is not completely foreign to the current Republican Congress, however. In 2011, the House GOP was forced to drop language from a bill that would have limited federal help to pay for an abortion to only victims of "forcible rape."

Nor is this Akin’s first time suggesting some types of rape are more worthy of protections than others. As a state legislator, Akin voted in 1991 for an anti-marital-rape law, but only after questioning whether it might be misused “in a real messy divorce as a tool and a legal weapon to beat up on the husband,” according to a May 1 article that year in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Wow. I agree with the question of how could someone even believe that. "the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down" No. Just no.

Considering his excellent knowledge of the female body, I'm pretty sure none of his six children is actually his.

It makes no sense whatsoever. What the heck does "legitimate rape" even mean?

I might not be the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to the female body. But even I know that's not true :ermm: I think.

Precisely. It doesn't mean anything. Rape is rape is rape. Whatever gender, whatever appendage.

It's not true. The vagina does not know whether the penis in it is there by choice or not.

Pretty sure it involves the insertion of a large spiked object into a Republican Senate Nominee.

... wow. That guy is just ... I don't even know. Why do they allow people like this in a power position. And I don't even mean the thing that rape can apparently be not legitimate, whatever the fuck that is supposed to mean, but how someone is allowed to say things like this, to back up his agenda by saying blatantly untrue things.

As a 14 year old, I will go ahead and state that I don't know much about the whole abortion issue. However, I will say that I'm pretty sure if someone's raped their body will not say "Okay, this isn't consensual, I'm not going to get pregnant."

And what the hell is a "legitimate rape"? What makes one rape more legitimate than another rape? It's still rape. Case closed.

Completely fails to mention the woman and her well being. Doubt it crossed his mind.
It's so alarming to me that there are people out there who think like this.

So according to this guy, if you do get pregnant from rape, it wasn't actually a "legitimate" rape at all? What does that even mean? I can't believe someone would say that, let alone actually believe it.

Wow. Reading this has really made me proud of the type of people who represent my state.

“First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV in an interview Sunday. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

What does this even mean? And when is rape ever legitimate?

None of this I just read made sence. At all  At first I thought I just didn't understand it, but then I figured out I actually didn't misunderstood anything.

“I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.”
Yeah because being born, because your mother was raped is just awesome!

This is just depressing.

:(

But I can't say I'm really surprised anymore...

I mean, look at Mit Romney's running mate, Paul Ryan.

That guy is like everything I hate about republicans rolled into one person.

The incumbent won her race rather narrowly in 2007 where popular sentiment was strongly pro-Democrat. If this man said this out loud, rather than wrote it, she should put every cent of her campaign money of airing his words on TV over and over and over again.
