It's finally getting cold, I think it was about 18 here today until lunch. The radio said we can expect single digits tomorrow morning

It's freezing here, and people are still wearing t-shirts and shorts for some reason. The summer is definitely over, so no warmth until May then.

Apparently we're supposed to start getting snow at the end of this month? Not looking forward to this.

It's the first time in 20 years that we've had the peak of the hurricane season come and go without a named storm. It's good, but it also means I didn't miss any school because of storms.

Not bad.

I checked the weather reports for London, I'm going there in two days. It's nice to go somewhere warmer.

Was gonna complain about how it's way too cold for Summer (it's 15C in the sun!) and that since mid-Summer wasn't really summer-y we deserve a warm late-Summer but then I realized it's Fall already.

Still though its way too cold for September!

So Chicago was vying for the cloudiest December on record. Too bad the sun came out today after 19 days without so we didn't break the record after all. :P

So I had to drive home from the airport (~40 miles) in the snow last night, which scared me. Even though I've lived in Colorado for three years, I still don't know how to drive on ice. Much to my surprise, the surface streets, which I opted to take over the wet and slick freeways, were in decent shape. Once it got to the point where the tire tracks in the snow were rapidly disappearing and the roads became snow-packed, I jumped on the interstate that, as usual, was fine up to a certain point, then went to shit after I passed the "we stopped caring about de-icing this freeway" mark.

Yes, there is a very specific point at which they stop giving a shit about plowing and de-icing the freeway, and it all goes to hell north of there.

Also as usual, people didn't seem to care about the fact that the freeway was now glazed over with a thin sheet of ice, as evidenced by the numerous cars spun off into the ditches and the people fishtailing as they bounced between lanes at 80 mph. I was going 40, by comparison. At that point, I said screw it and got off the freeway an exit early, then took a snow-packed frontage road home. I can do snow-packed all damn day and night, but sheets of ice on a road full of people making it very difficult to go a safe speed scare the shit out of me.

I'm not ready for the wet part of winter to be here. Also, Kay will probably laugh at me for this post, being that she lives in the frozen tundra and only gets to drive on snow-free roads for a few days out of the year.

In my simple mind, I always assume that nearer the equator = warmer, and yet all of the northern part of the USA seems cold. Like all the time. Even though it's further south than the UK. Is it at altitude or something?

Not really. Most of the US has a temperate climate, which means that it stays mild much of the year, but it can get very cold. Where I'm at, altitude definitely plays into it. The UK is also a very small nation surrounded by moderately warm seas, which helps to moderate things there and make it warmer than the same latitude in, say, central Canada would be. Generally speaking, yes, the closer you get to the Equator, the warmer things are. Once you start looking at specific examples, though, you'll find all kinds of situations that result in an exception to that rule.

Ocean currents do matter a lot, for example our capital Helsinki is more northern than the southern end of Greenland and still it's much warmer here. If we take the northern part of the US, it's much nearer the equator than we are, but the temperatures and the climate is roughly same.
Also, in the case of the UK it must be noted that your country is an island and therefore the ocean changes the climate a lot, for example it means that you get more rain but the temperature changes are relatively small, which basically means that your winters are always relatively warm.
If it weren't for those sea currents the climate of the northern parts of Europe would be as cold as the climate of Greenland and the northern parts of Canada.

I'm hardly an expert but that's how it goes basically, if my memory serves me right.
