yeah so north korea's leader, kim jong il, died.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has died at the age of 69, state-run television has announced.

His death was announced in an emotional statement read out on national television.

The announcer, wearing black, said he had died on Saturday of physical and mental over-work.

So, 2011 has seen the deaths of Osama bin Laden, Moammar Gadhafi, and now Kim Jong Il.
Good year.

Oh wow. I can only imagine the news broadcast there, going off of what I've seen of their telecasts...

If it is his third son taking over, then that'll be interesting. He's been exposed in a positive light to western culture... just maybe he might do something good for that place. Who knows. It's all creepily fascinating.

True, I hadn't thought about the other two deaths.

I remember the documentary footage of when Kim Il Sung died, people crying on the streets and screaming "take us with you", that's some creepy shit. Despite the over the top mourning being guaranteed again, partially from decades of brainwashing and partially at the point of machine guns, I don't think Kim Jong Il was ever as great in his peoples' eyes as his father, and I suspect his son will be even less so. I can imagine, at least, this is the last time the North Korean dynasty will be passed on. The country is either going to shrivel up and beg the South for food and reunification one of these days, if Jong-Un continues his father's "Juche for everyone but the politburo" bullshit, or the nation might hang on longer independently if his son liberalizes it.

Alternatively, I could see a civil war if the youngest son cannot earn the respect of the military, or an outright coup. Nonetheless, like Kim Jong-Il, North Korea cannot live forever in its fanatical devotion to isolation and authoritarian policy. But, alas, speculation. Hard to tell what's going to happen.

The only other thing I might have to say is to remind all my internet friends that just because North Korea's tyrants call themselves "communists", or "Marxist-Leninists", doesn't mean they accurately portray the ideology in any way, shape, or form. Though you can thank Stalin for "socialism in one state" which really fucked communism to begin with... okay, ending this before I start rambling.

Bye Kim Jong-Il. Since your fucking people are starving to death because you were a douche, you don't get or deserve an "RIP". All I will say is I hope they dressed you up in your casket, since you always had the worst fashion sense of any world leader.

Another Tyrant bites the dust, not sure if this helps the North Koreans as his son does not seem to be much better than what he was.

Well he was educated in the US and is apparently fond of basketball. Might be a good thing for the world to have better relations between the two countries. In the end, I just hope he brings benefits to his people.

edit: read somewhere else that he was educated in Switzerland. That would make more sense.

What's the difference between North Korea and Auschwitz?

Auschwitz had electricity.

Reading up a little more on the Kims, Kim Jong Il was a big fan of women, lobster and cognac, apparently.

Harsh, Aska. Harsh.

No, in all seriousness there is nothing funny about how fucked the people of North Korea are, it is very sad. But, since no one in the Western World is crying for the late nutcase, humor has its place.

Who the hell is going to argue this, and how would one even do so? You could make the argument that they're actually a fascist dictatorship, but it sounds as if someone's going to argue a more positive government than that...

North Korea's dictatorship is as far from Marxist values as humanly possible. Marx argued that individual empowerment should be a goal - he wrote that man becomes less when he puts more value into God or into his labor than himself. But in North Korea, Kim Il-Sung and his heirs are "God" and the state is more oppressive than the worst capitalists.

Erich Fromm writes about how degenerated workers' states actually resemble capitalism much more than they resemble true communism. I suppose you could call North Korea "Stalinists" but even that would not be a fully accurate label. I would call them "totalitarian state capitalists", but that requires much more of an explanation than just conceding that one is a communist because they claim to be.

I think north korea is not a communist country, Hell, I don't even think a country has ever been a communist since Communism is all marx's utopia and impossible to attain. North Korea is a pseudo socialistic monarchy ruled by the Kim dynasty.
