NASA's planet-hunting Kepler spacecraft has confirmed the discovery of its first alien world in its host star's habitable zone — that just-right range of distances that could allow liquid water to exist — and found more than 1,000 new explanet candidates, researchers announced today (Dec. 5).

What do you guys think? I'm personally fascinated by this sort of stuff so I think this is really cool. :)

Sorry if there's a thread I could have just posted this in, mods please merge if you need too.

Earth-like planets aren't anomalies...
It's cool, but solely the fact that they're found a planet in a star's habitable zone doesn't excite me.

When there's more information suggesting there really might be life or possibility for life I'll be all ear

On the one hand, this is "whoa..." cool. On the other hand, I hope we never actually get to visit there -- it would be nice to spare some other world the opportunity for us to fuck it up.

They said there may be life on it too - that's pretty exciting if you ask me, even though its 600 light years away and we can't get there yet

Nasa just found a planet that it takes a space shuttle 22 million years to get there.

Now we just have to figure out how to GET there.

I'm fascinated by space too. Total Nasa Nerd- i was in FL last summer and took a tour of the space center... and also saw a launch in person (unmanned rocket but whatever) AND IT WAS TOTALLY FUCKING MINDBLOWING!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously. Science and exploration is the future. Mankind must never stop exploring. And don't give me that "we need to spend money on stuff HERE first" crap. Nasa's operating budget for the year is like what we spend on war in a DAY. Maybe we need to slow down, shift focus once in a while... but the incidental discoveries that NASA has made have changed mankind forever. VELCRO! ARTIFICIAL JOINTS! etc...
*rant off*
