Stay The Night

This week’s Song of the Week is the as-yet unreleased track Stay the Night, originally played at the sound check for the 2010 Dublin show, and more recently played with other new songs at the four secret Green Day shows. According to reports from people that have been to the secret shows, the song’s sound has changed somewhat from its original Dublin version, however there’s no new recordings of this new version, so for this Song of the Week we’re sticking with the old version.

The lyrics are rather blatant in their meaning, so I’ll just skip past them and go straight to the sound of the song (plus it’s late and I have work tomorrow). First of all, I love the sound of this song, to me it’s part Cigarettes and Valentines, part very early Green Day with that ‘chugging’ guitar in the verses, and at the same time it’s got the potential to be a huge arena song with such a catchy chorus. Obviously the sound check version of Stay The Night that we currently have is just an early version of the song and it still needs refining - it’ll certainly be interesting to see how the final album version of this song turns out, if it ends up making the next album.

This week’s video was recorded on the 22nd of June, 2010 in Marlay Park, outside of Dublin, at the sound check before the concert on the 23rd. The stage was set up on one end of a big field with just a mesh fence blocking the area in, so us 20 or so Green Day fans there, plus all the families using the field, got a perfect view of the entire sound check.

Lyrics:

I haven't got much time so I'll get to the point

Do you wanna share a ride and get the fuck out of this joint

I got an impulse so repulsive that it burns

I wanna break your heart until it makes your stomach churn

I gotta know if you’re the one that got away

Even though it was never meant to be

So stay, stay the night

Cause we're running out of time

So stay the night

I don't wanna say goodbye

Stay, stay the night

Cause we're running out of time

So stay the night

I don't wanna say goodbye

I'm not just sick and tired of feeling so alone

Well, I don't understand the point if you have to go home

Why won't you stay and cure the circles around my eyes

And we can watch the stars until the sun begins to rise

I gotta know if you’re the one that got away

Even though it was never meant to be

So stay, stay the night

Cause we're running out of time

So stay the night

I don't wanna say goodbye

Stay, stay the night

Cause we're running out of time

So stay the night

I don't wanna say goodbye

Perfect song of the week! I love this version of Stay the Night, and I really hope that the more recent surprise shows version isn't too different from the original.

Great song. I've liked it since the first time I heard it. I hope they record it for their next album, or at least make it a b-side for one of the singles.

Obligatory "I was at that soundcheck" comment :D

This song is so fucking epic live, its a joy to play on guitar and the chorus is truly catchy. Words cant describe my love for this song.

We need a studio/finished version . . . . . NOW

Great song... I guess. I don't listen to it often :whistle

"I wanna break your heart until it makes your stomach churn" I don't know why, but I love this line

Oh hey I was just talking about this song in another thread! And somone else thinks it's similar to C&V so yay :D

An extremely awesome song! So lucky that we've been able to hear it. What a lovely treat, and ever since we first heard it it's made me so excited for what's coming next from the band. It has a wonderful simple classic sound. It reminds me a bit of older Green Day stuff, but more than that it reminds me of old, classic rock music, which I LOVE the idea of. And of course now we've heard/heard about the songs from the secret shows it seems that is indeed the sound they're going for so now I'm even more excited! Stay The Night was the first hint at the direction they're going in though and it was a thrill to hear it.

Great lyrics. I especially love the line I got an impulse so impulsive that it burns, I wanna break your heart until it makes your stomach churn. It's a love song with a very dark edge, and the words are raw and to the point. Really, really, really hope to hear a studio recording of this song.

I love this song so much and i hope it's gonna make it on the new record! I'd love to have a studio version of this, and I'm curious how it sounded at the surprise shows!

My favorite line is 'I got an impulse so impulsive that it burns'

Love this song. This along with Carpe Diem and Stray Heart are the ones that I really hope make the new album.

I'm curious how this has changed since the version we hear now.

The chorus is my least favorite part of this song. It's the first and third paragraphs that slay me! That's how I feel about Stray Heart as well. Curious to see how they reworked it!

Being as we don't have official lyrics, it's anyone's guess, but I hear 'I wanna break your heart until it makes your stomach turn'. Fucking great line, and it injects this cynicism into the wild romance of this song - like, I want what I want from this, and I'm gonna get it. It's a strong song, it's got this drive that speaks the 'impulse so impulsive', pleading and powerful at the same time. The intro-outro guitar sound blazons a sincerity, heart-worn-on-your-sleeve that's undercut by a desperation in the lyrics that swoops to almost viciousness, this hunger. It's a pretty savage love-song, and love-song it is, although love is never mentioned in all its commandeering. Love is maybe too much to wish for, but this song wishes for it anyway - someone to watch the stars with, someone to take away the lonely.

I'm also hearing 'count the circles round my eyes' - when I first heard this song, I felt like that line was a reference to 'count the rings around my eyes' in The Replacements' 'I Will Dare'.

I too hope that this ends up on the new album. Lyrically it reminded me of alot of my past relationships..LoL Musically it's very catchy and it made me feel like dancing. I'm curious to hear the updated version now!

Fucking love this song. I'm really looking forward to the updated version, eventhough the song doesn't seem like it needs that much refining. :)

I've been waiting for "Stay The Night" being Song of the Week.. and now it happened! :woot:

All I have to say is that I love this song. I loved it from the very first moment when I listened to it. I really hope it will find a place on the new record.. this song deserves it.

And I totally agree with Aska when it comes to this sentence: ".."to me it’s part Cigarettes and Valentines, part very early Green Day with that ‘chugging’ guitar in the verses, and at the same time it’s got the potential to be a huge arena song with such a catchy chorus."

This is possibly Green Day's best song since American Idiot in my opinion, and it's a rubbish sound check recording! How good is this song! It MUST be released! Now!

I love this song :D I loved it the first time I heard and and I still love it. The sound just clicks with me.

Just said it in another thread, so I might as well post it here as well (I hadn't seen this thread)

I've always thought the Stay the Night intro sounds like their cover thingy of Santa Claus Is Coming To Town  Now that I listen to it (Santa Claus), it doesn't sound that similar, but Stay the Night always reminds me of it...)

(the songs starts around 0:45)

This is such a wonderful song, I'm looking forward to hear the studio version since I heard it for the first time and I'm very happy that it looks that there is a concrete possibility that it will be in the next album!

I like very much the lyrics, so I hope they didn't change them. Favourite part? The whole second strophe! so much tenderness!

And I agree with associating it with Cigarettes and Valentine! I also feel it close to Last Gang in Town, especially their bridge!

Love Stay the Night! When that video was posted on GDC for the first time, I listened to it non-stop. I still listen to the song, it's great. The music reminds me a lot of 86, a bit of Scattered, a bit of Cigarettes and Valentines, and yet also something different and new. Perfect combination if you'd ask me. "I got an impulse so impulsive that it burns", powerful lyrics, and basically what the song is about. It's very straightforward, don't hesitate, something like that.

I hope we'll get a studio version of Stay the Night, and official lyrics. Maybe even on the next record! Who knows.. I'd love that.

Such a greatsong, and I happen to be learning to play it right now. Personally I love the chorus and second verse the most out of the whole song, and the guitar riff is splendid!
