I'd like to post another analysis deal for Holiday, but (1.) I don't have time right now, and (2.) there's not much to analyze. Both from the perspective of the AI storyline and social commentary, the song's pretty straightforward. It's not a complex masterpiece like JOS, but after listeners get through all of JOS, they need a shorter, upbeat, fun song to follow it. Come to think of it, AI (the album) has some of the best pacing and track placement I've ever heard--the album itself plays like a concert in a lot of ways, and maybe someday I'll expand on that.
Holiday's not a stroke of genius or anything like that, it's just fun. It's fun on the album (even though it's probably not a fun song for the narrator, being that the events which occur during it lead into the BOBD bottom-out), and it's REALLY fun live! I loved how it was played a little bit faster on the 21CB tour than it was on the album or AI tour, and I
love whoever got the brilliant idea to put freaking concussion pyro in the breakdown! You just don't expect explosions at that point in the song, and even if you know they're coming, they're still so loud that it freaks you out. Loudest bangs of the show, I thought, and they got me back to the front of the lawn. Funny, quick story.
We got to the amphitheater early to get to the front of the lawn, right at the front edge of it, and we did. But something annoying happened--a couple of families brought ten kids (4-10 years old, give or take) between the two of them, and the kids kept shoving up to the wire. A couple of moms actually pushed people aside so the kids, who arrived five minutes before GD came on, could get right up front. That, naturally, annoyed me.
Of course, Billie Joe saved the day. When he got to the "BANG BANG" line, the concussions were so loud that three of the youngest kids on the line literally went three feet up in the air in shock, and came down crying so much that one of the moms had to pull them out of the crowd and disappear with them to calm them down. Mrs. Busted Drumkit and I, naturally, strolled right back up to the wire, and did not give up our spots for the rest of the show--even when the brats came back half an hour later.

And, yes, Holiday was played before the Muse show we saw as well. Either right before or right after All My Life by the Foo Fighters, which is also one of my favorite songs. Not too many people singing along, though--most were more interested in the kid who had just done an epic faceplant down 20 flights of stairs at the arena. Delayed the show by almost 45 minutes while they literally mopped up the blood. All's well that ends well, though--I heard somewhere that the arena tracked down the drunk woman who slammed into him and sent him flying, and he sued the shit out of her for his medical bills. I remember it so well because the kid did his Superman impression right as the rhythm of the song was kicking in. Perfectly-timed stage dive, only no one told him to do it, and the top of an arena is a bad place to do one of those.
