Shoot That Fucker Down

aaaaghjlasj i still haven't watched the last episode but from what i hear it added a ton of stuff that wasn't in the books that pretty much cements a few of the theories and i'm so excited. edit: or it can change it all and leave me confused but sobbing anyways o k a y

i am so excited/terrified for season 3 there are actually no words.

Spoilers below for those who haven't read the books.

Okay so here are the major changes going forward in season 3:

  • Ser Dontos will have no part to play in helping Sansa escape King's Landing. They cut to the chase by revealing Littlefinger as her means of leaving, and I'm of the opinion this works better than in the book. Ser Dontos dies anyway, so why clutter up an already ENORMOUS cast with a character who draws no sympathy and keeps Littlefinger off the screen? Aiden Gillen is a fantastic actor who's potrayal of Baelish has been insanely spot on, so it's for the best.
  • Ros and Varys are going to have their own angle, or so it appears. Once again, Varys is a tertiary character in the books who remains off the page for the most part in order to retain an air of mystery about him. They can't really do that with a TV show, especially when he's such an integral character that drives/curates/ties the massive tangled plot web, so to keep him in the audience's memory he's going to be working with Ros on keeping tabs on Varys, which may or may not work. Ros has been kind of hated by most of the diehard fans since she wasn't really in the book, but she's come off as sort of a representative of the commonwealth and how the wars have affected them.
  • Sam appears to be striking out on his own, somewhat. I wouldn't be surprised if they speed along his angle with Gilly.
  • I think Dany's angle in season 3 will be far superior to the clumsy awkward Qarth nonsense. We'll get to see Barriston and Fat Belwas and her getting the Unsullied. That being said with virtually every character, we're going to be losing a lot of development (which occurs during the long and tedious travels each one goes on), so I would imagine the Unsullied acquisition will be a season-long endeavor for her.

The main thing to keep in mind is that they simply can't be 100% faithful to the books anymore. Each one is far too huge, detailed, and the series is so character-abundant that it's not logical. They killed off Doreah and Xaro Xohan Daxos, and more characters of that scale will be killed off. Jojen and Meera Reed are apparently cast for season 3, but I wouldn't be surprised if their appearances are short-lived.

basically

(book spoilers)

i am perfectly all right with most of the changes, and actually like a few characters more for the changes that have been made. but the houses of the undying seemed like it was supposed to be some sort of focal point for the series with hints and secrets that i wanted to see on screen so badly. what i got were some mild hints about jon snow and the iron throne, and an almost needless scene between dany and drogo. but whatever, it was still touching to see them together once more. dany's entire storyline has just turned into one big mess after the slaughter of most of the khalasar. it's the one big change that i'm not really enjoying because it lacks the depth it had in the books. the show-plot for dany is very superficial and bland.

and the absence of ramsay snow at winterfell is concerning me, but only because i'm so attached to theon's storyline in the books and i want every little aspect of it to be perfect, even though i know it won't be. i'll live.

also also: the lady talisa/jeyne westerling change has me really confused. isn't the point of the RW (which i'm assuming they'll keep) to show how stupid blind honour is? now it's just going to have this awful message about "real love" or whatever. alas. that's just a thinky thoughts that don't quite make sense.

Dany's scene with Drogo was to cement her resolve. She's shown this part of her life she wants so badly, but then hears her annoying dragons and knows she has to choose them. This scene allowed for closure between her and Drogo who she never really got to say goodbye to properly.

Also it's hard to convey Dany's progression because unlike the books we can't consistently see inside her head. It doesn't help that Emilia Clarke's acting is still pretty raw and she's not quite as versatile as I think the producers originally expected her to be.

the hornblower because the hornblower is fucking annoying.

i am very very overprotective of theon. it's a sickness.

but, see, i was working under the impression that dany had already done her closure/good-byes with drogo at the end of season 1 when she burned his body and the dragons hatched in the same moment. to me, that was symbolic of her letting go of the life she could have had and and accepting the responsibility of a new one. so this new scene with drogo was just largely repetitive.

Hubby was watching a character description on HBO last night and since I haven't seen the last ep yet I didn't want him to tell me anything, so instead when an actor came on to talk about his character, he would just say, he's dead. Over and over and over again. :P

Second series finale I really don't know what to make of it. I am reading the books ate the moment and I will wait til I finish Clash of Kings before I give a full review. From a TV only perspective I felt it was a satisfactory ending and I cannot wait for series 3. But I want to see how it fares in comparison to the book.

Of the second season. Not the show altogether. But I think they've caught up with the books, though.

They're not caught up with the books. There's 5 books out and there's only been 2 seasons. Seasons 3 and 4 are covering book 3.

On that note, book 5, A Dance With Dragons, is easily the worst book in the series. Just terrible reading.

What book would you say is the best? I just started reading the first one a few weeks ago and I'm probably going to read all of them. But is A Dance with Dragons seriously just plain bad or do you still recommend reading all the books?

I think A Storm of Swords is the best...I'm guessing you've finished them all now due to the fact you posted this ages ago but hey. And I don't think A Dance with Dragons is terrible...OK the Dany chapters are painful to read, but it's not a bad book. It's a great book in fact, just not as good as some of the others in the series...then again, that's just my opinion.
