I don't mind a bit of Christmas fluff on the day, it's only afterwards when you watch them with the rest of the series that the Christmas specials can be a bit dodgy. (Unless there RTD ones which still hold up pretty well.)

A bit of Christmas is fine, but when it's the entire basis of the plot, something's gone wrong.

Theory: Moffat said, "Hmmm I wonder how shitty an episode has to be for Peter Capaldi not to be able to turn it into something bearable to watch."

And this Christmas episode was born.

That makes sense, as that outfit definitely makes it harder for Capaldi to be awesome.

Has there ever been a decent Who Christmas special?

It's remarkable that it's become such a Christmas staple really. Even though the specials are generally crap, it wouldn't be Christmas without a Who special.

The Sycorax one was definitely good, and the Christmas/New Year two-parter with the Master is good too. They're the first ones to come to mind, but I'm sure there are more.

All the ones that Tennant had were good. I think. If there was a bad one, I've forgotten it. All of Matt's were definitely quite shit, but I do have an irrational soft spot for "The Snowmen."

The Snowmen was decent. I find RTD's ones tend to be better just because they relate to the rest of the series better. (Eg, intro to ten in Christmas Invasion, first appearance of Donna in Runaway Bride, and the build up and regeneration of Ten in the last ones. Voyage of the Damned and the Next Doctor are the only ones that don't really fit, and even the Next Doctor is intriguing when you first watch it because of the misleading premise. I think they work better for me because they're usually like a normal episode with a bit more  spectacle and a hint of Christmas-y ness in the background. Moffat's ones feel Christmas-y, but they don't work all that well as episodes beyond that. The Snowmen was decent though, because it introduced Clara.

The Snowmen could be decent, but...snowmen. Really, they're not a good choice for a threat.

^I kind of liked that idea though, turn an innocent childhood creation into a monster... could've been executed better though...

Pretty much sums up all of Moffat, really.
