I'm really intrigued by this new album. There has been a ton of information released over the last three weeks or so, and I cannot wait for the fall. I'm really liking how they are taking a chance on this album, instead of making a Wasting Light II. It seems like a big risk, but to me it doesn't seem like they are doing this album the way they are just for the sake of doing something different. With the collaborations, songwriting process, and musical tastes, this album seems like it will take a giant step in redefining what a typical Foo Fighters song/album can be. I'm trying to keep my expectations low, because I know I'll compare this new album to Wasting Light or any of their previous albums, only to be let down in some way, shape, or form. I did that with Green Day with the trilogy, and sure the trilogy overall isn't their best work, but out of the thirty-seven songs there are a decent amount that I truly enjoy now. I'm sure we are months or maybe a year away before we get an inkling of what Green Day's new album could sound like, but I would love them to try and make another reinvention. They should take a new risk sound wise, and god for bid collaborate with other musicians or even songwriters. Trust me Billie is a great songwriter and I am not questioning that, but in my mind a collaboration with someone else would be cool. I hope that Lady Cobra isn't the only person the guys ever collaborate with. Plus, I got the feeling from the trilogy that Green Day will just make songs that sound Nimrodish. There were enough songs throughout the trilogy that made me think of Nimrod or could fit on Nimrod. While I like Nimrod, I don't want the rest of their career to make songs that only sound like that. That sound is their middle of the road sound.
Getting back to the Foo Fighters album, the only thing I could see this being a negative is that this is a Sound City II. I realize that contradicts what I just wrote, but while I liked the sound of the songs, the songwriting was subpar. I could see this happening, especially when Dave is writing the lyrics to the songs the night before or the day that they record the song in each city. Again this "negative" essentially contradicts what I said, but I'll spend the next few months keeping my expectations in check.
