2008 review of Pinhead Gunpowder at Gilman

“We’ve played some shows, like down in San Pedro, the kinds of shows I haven’t played in 15 years,” he explained to me, hanging around the side door before the doors opened. “It’s been fuckin’ great. But this place…”—he paused, stared nervously at the club—“I haven’t played here in a long time.”

After “Mahogany,” the lights came up, the side door opened, and Billie Joe Armstrong ambled out onto Eighth Street. I caught up with him, steam emanating from his drenched body, in the same spot where beforehand he’d expressed uncertainty.

“That,” he told me, “was great.”

Anyone have high-quality rips of the Dillinger Four/PHGP EP?

I always knew Pinhead Gunpowder existed, but it's taken me this long to properly listen to them. I can't believe I've been missing out all these years, because they're great.

Not sure if it's been covered already, but why does Spotify only have Shoot the Moon?

I mean obviously it's their best album but still :P

maybe it's because of licensing rights or like rights to certain songs. Spotify would pay so much for specific bands.  like Origin and EP and Sound Asleep won't be on spotify, i am lucky Fallen, ABH, TOD and Ev3 is still up b/c windup records sucks. but all in all it does come down to obtaining rights to songs.

That's an interesting order there. I'd go for:

1. Goodbye Ellston Avenue

2. Shoot the Moon

3. Compulsive Disclosure

4. Carry the Banner

5. Jump Salty

I need to listen to them all again in succession to be certain, but that's what I generally go for.

I'd order them the same!

I'm so glad I investigated this band when I heard of them, for their brilliant songs and also because thanks to hearing Aaron's lyrics and seeing his artwork in the CD booklets I found out about his other writing which is amazing and very reminiscent of his lyrics. I just ordered a book of his that I don't have yet for Christmas, I should listen to some Pinhead Gunpowder to celebrate.

I didn't really discover them as such, they were just a part of life - my mum's love of Green Day extended to all the side bands, so I've known they existed since I was at least 5. It was only a few months ago that I really listened to them properly, but Cabot Girl is one of the songs I distinctly recognise from my childhood.

Jump Salty is a good album, of course, but I'm not such a fan of the shouty, scratchier vocal stuff.

I've known about Pinhead Gunpowder since I was about 11. I remember being on some website with tons of GD lyrics and it had "Life During Wartime" and so I was all like "WTF? I don't know that song." so I went and looked it up and thought it was an awesome song, then got Goodbye Ellston Avenue, loved it, then got everything else.

And here's how I'd rank the albums:

1. Goodbye Ellston Avenue

2. Carry the Banner

3. Jump Salty

4. Compulsive Disclosure

5. Shoot the Moon

I don't mind when the Frustrators do it, but yeah, for the most part I'm not a fan of that kind of thing. I could never really get into Rancid because of the vocals, though I quite liked everything else about them.

Yeah, I wish I could get over it, because I'm missing out.

Honest I was the same way for years.

Then I ended up getting into death metal, and then backtracked into hardcore punk, so I was used to "scratchy" vocals.

There are some that I still can't stand...a lot of punk vocalists (be it hardcore/crust/pop/anarcho/ska/whatever) are annoying.
I understand that they are good at what they do, though. but then again some are just god awdul

The best way to go about listening, is approaching each artist with an open mind, and maybe force yourself to listen to it a couple times until it becomes catchy :P

When I was about 4, International Supervideos was one of the only things I was able to sit and watch without getting bored/distracted. Oh, and my 5th birthday party had The Frustrators' Pirate Song on loop all day. That was awesome.

Some of my friends are metalheads, so I've heard some of their stuff, and it really wasn't at all my thing. I'll try to give Rancid another go, but I've never really liked any of that kind of vocals.

Honestly I'm not into Rancid either, or really any of Tim's vocals. But I like him so much that I'm forced to tolerate it
