Walking Alone

This week's Song of the Week is Walking Alone (when the GDC forum is down). This one will be active until Monday, March 8, when we'll get back on the Monday schedule. Please use this thread to discuss your thoughts and feelings about the song.

Walking Alone was released on the Nimrod album in 1997. Nimrod reached a peak position of number 10 on the charts and has gone platinum twice.

I'm sure everyone must have experienced that feeling of being alone - not having support when it's really needed, missing old friends, feeling that no one understands, or just being lonely for company. Those times come around in everyone's lives. But somehow, this song has never made me feel lonely or isolated. The first line, "Come together like a foot in a shoe, only this time I think I stuck my foot in my mouth," always amuses me and brings a smile to my face. Then as I listen to the rest of the song, I start to feel sad for the person singing it. The music has a very poignant sound, and that last line, "Too drunk to figure out they're fading away," seems so depressing. I love the song, though - maybe because it makes me realize each time I hear it that I'm not really alone. Not to mention (but I will), I'm a sucker for almost any song that uses a harmonica. There's also a very natural harmony that I love to sing with this song, and that makes my heart happy.

Here's an audio file of this song. I couldn't find a live video, but please post if you have one.

Walking Alone Lyrics

Come together like a foot in a shoe,

Only this time I think I stuck my foot in my mouth.

Thinking out loud and acting in vain -

Knocking over anyone that stands in my way.

Sometimes I need to apologize.

Sometimes I need to admit that I ain't right.

Sometimes I should just keep my mouth shut, or only say hello.

Sometimes I still feel I'm walking alone.

Walk on eggshells on my old stomping ground -

Yet there's really no one left that's hanging around.

Isn't that another familiar face?

Too drunk to figure out they're fading away.

Sometimes I need to apologize.

Sometimes I need to admit that I ain't right.

Sometimes I should just keep my mouth shut, or only say hello.

Sometimes I still feel I'm walking alone.

Sometimes I need to apologize.

Sometimes I need to admit that I ain't right.

Sometimes I should just keep my mouth shut, or only say hello.

Sometimes I still feel I'm walking alone.

I love this song a lot. a few weeks ago I couldn't stop listening to it. the lines below related to me on some levels a little bit. I went away to college and when I go back to my hometown it feels different.

"Walk on eggshells on my old stomping ground

Yet there's really no one left that's hanging around.

Isn't that another familiar face?

Too drunk to figure out they're fading away."

"Sometimes I need to apologize.

I have a hard time describing this song. It is a beautiful song, and I know exactly what you mean with the natural harmony you want to sing with. It's a calming song, too, for me at least.

It also makes me feel sad, because I can relate so well to it most of the time. Then, on the other side, I also know that it's actually quite the opposite, still the 'walking alone' feeling, but because of contrary reasons. It doesn't make me feel lonely, though.

I feel like I'm missing something in this post. Maybe I'll come back to it later.
