New "Interests" subforum for Clubs, Your Art/Music, and more

We've decided to re-organize a little bit on GDC. As many know, I strongly dislike having a long list of subforums on the index. i think it gets confusing and a bit daunting.

I've always felt the "Community" and "General" subforums were a little mixed. @Amanda gave me the idea of having an "Interests" subforum to put related content together and I really liked that. So we've created a new subforum "Interests" to put all that stuff together, and removed the "General" category. Shenanigans was moved to the main 'Community' section and 'Other Artists' was moved to Interests. So now when you view the index you'll see the following subforums under a new "Interests" subforum

  • Clubs
  • Musicians' Lounge
  • Other Artists
  • Brink of Your Vision
  • Movies, TV, Books & Games

We've also decided to merge together the Musicians Lounge from the three subforums it was (Musicians Lounge, Share your Work, Feedback) to one place where people can share their work and get feedback on their music, lyrics, instruments, whatever.

I think this makes the index page look easier to navigate, puts related content grouped together,

I would like your feedback on the name. Should we have a Green Day related name for 'Interests'? If so - any recommendations?

Looks messy as fuck. And that's not just criticism for the sake of it.

I got some names:

  • Wow! That's A Lot of (Unrelated) Subforms
  • Mass Hysteria
  • 21 (Unrelated) Subforms

Nah, I kid. But I do agree with Ceadog and Ben, though.

This would be a good idea if Interests were its own set of forums on the main index, but I kinda like this since it saves scrolling space on mobile

EDIT: scratch that, I like this just fine. On a slightly unrelated note, I think we should just kill Shenanigans and move the Picture Thread to General Chat

I actually do think these topics are related. I think they're much more related than previously grouped. And I agree entirely that scrolling less is a great side-effect.

I think it'll take some getting used to, but if I'm a new person browsing the site then I think this set up is better (and obviously those are the people who matter in this case). It makes it more clear (to me anyway) that there's a lot more to this forum than just Green Day. The title probably needs adjusting, though, as I type this I've thought of none better :P

I think it's important to keep the Picture Thread in an area protected from random lurkers and search engines. Same goes for the Feelings Thread.

It's already protected from guests and search engines; you can't view General Chat unless you're a registered member

Isn't everything except the Green Day-specific forums already locked out to unregistered users?

In Shenanigans there's still a 100 post permission requirement, when those permissions were set up it was partly for the reasons I mentioned previously.

Agree to disagree. I think the point of posting selfies is for people to see them. If you only want certain people to see or read something you post, send a PM. Otherwise, I don't see why people feel the need to shield their identity so much. When you socialize with someone in the outside world, you readily let them see your face. Why make things so impersonal when they don't have to be?

How are they unrelated? They're all for discussing other interests, and putting them together slims the front page down. This is a forum where there used to be one section called Green Day/General Chat and it worked alright, bringing a few sections closer together can't hurt.

Disagree about moving the picture thread and dismantling Shenanigans, it's good to have a place that's a bit more private for posting photos as well as sometimes for posting voices/videos.

I have to agree with Nemo.  I didn't even realize there was a change until I read this.  It's fine.  It will be easier for new people to understand.

Maybe try removing the asterisks from the subforum titles, or at least make them smaller if possible, or use a dot. The giant asterisks look like snowflakes.

I, personally, don't want The Picture Thread to be public because I don't want a lot of people in my real life to know I'm on here. If one of my friends happens to make an account, makes 100 posts, and then sees my face in The Picture Thread, then whatever, but I post a lot of semi-personal stuff here, sometimes about people in my real life, and I don't want it to be incredibly easy to connect my face to my posts.

Also add in the fact that my crazy abusive ex step-dad has taken to stalking me on the Internet lately, and having my face found on here easily could actually be a huge disaster for me, tbh.

I think the asterisks need to go. They're huge and awkward (at least on mobile).

Nice idea, though It looks messy, and I don't fully understand the difference between Interests and General Chat. Interests is basically a hobbies forum, right? By that logic, some of the threads in General could be moved there like the Travel thread (or make that into a club?) and crafting thread (clubworthy too?). In my opinion there seems to be some overlap. If Interests is more for specific hobbies and such then General should really be general, right now I don't think it's random enough with the thread examples I've mentioned.

Yeah not really feeling this idea. It just seems cumbersome to lump them all together and then click through different pages to reach the one you want. The other way just seemed so much easier.

After playing with it for awhile, it is cumbersome.  Not that is really a big deal, but I have one more click to get to some of the threads I visit.  I'm sure I'll get used to it but seems cumbersome now.

You shouldn't have to click any more than you did before, you can enter each subforum directly by clicking on its title. The only real difference is that they are closer together on the board.

What are the asterisks for?

They indicate unread posts in that particular subforum.

Once read they look like this

I would still rather have new posts in my Followed Content in that side bar rather than all new content.

I think Fuzz is working on it, but it's something we'd have to get specifically developed for GDC, since that feature doesn't exist anymore.
