Starting today we're removing links to ask.fm from status updates

The mod team has unanimously decided to stop allowing ask.fm links in status updates. We'll be deleting them from now on. We'll also be removing any other anonymous type q&a sites like anonymous questions via tumblr.

The are two major reasons for this change:

1) We're tired of all the promotional links for ask in status updates. There are just way too many that it's nearly removed any value from the status feature. It's become a place simply to promote ask.fm links and everything else is quickly drowned out. It's just tiring seeing the same exact links all the time.

2) We're tired of all the associated negativity that has come from allowing anonymous comments away from GDC. There's a group of people who mostly enjoy talking shit about others, stirring up crap, then dragging it all back to GDC by promoting their content. Then they play innocent like they've done nothing wrong. People will always talk shit about other people, but doing so anonymously and publicly isn't helping anyone at all.

Starting today we'll begin deleting status' to ask.fm or anonymous questionnaire sites. If you do it repeatedly you will be given a warning to stop.

How exactly is this different from the first time you banned ask.fm links in statuses, which everyone proceeded to completely ignore?

I've asked the team to delete all statuses with a link and people will be given a warning if they keep doing it.

So, in other words, no difference whatsoever.

I'm betting nothing. Mods are notoriously sleepy :D

While we're going about reforming status updates, we should add the ability to like them. :D

I don't remember being asked to delete them from statuses before. I believe we only asked all members not to do and that didn't work so well, so that's why the change.

You didn't listen. :)

It's almost as if those people in charge didn't listen to the ordinary forum users, and were surprised when they didn't blindly follow their requests.

We heard. We didn't heed :)

So is it not allowed to be promoted on the forum at all? I don't use ask.fm, but I was curious if you could like post a link to your thing in your about me or something. I'm just asking out of pure curiosity. :)

And because you didn't heed (listen), the decision on what to do was changed.

You can post it in the ask.fm thread and on your about me, of course. We're just trying to keep it from spamming the status' on here. :)

Could we have an explanation as to why users have been able to ignore the old policy with impunity for at least 4 months or so? Even mods/admins were joining in and ignoring the old policy?

If I'm not mistaken (and I very well could be) I believe we asked people not to spam links there constantly. We didn't tell people not to post them at all. Or at least I don't remember doing that.

This is a more formal request (a rule now). Don't you see this awesome blog post and everything?

There was definitely an announcement of some sort from Andres saying that all ask.fm links in statuses would be deleted. I haven't got a screenshot of it, but I distinctly remember laughing about it when it happened :P

I believed he said it in a status update or something and started deleting them in the beginning since people started posting them anyways. The original goal of that post was to stop users from spamming their links.

Because we (hands up, me included) have been far too soft in an attempt to be reasonable. Then when we do have to step things up after people have been ignoring the rules for months, everyone whines about it. Moral of the story: People will bitch and moan about everything regardless of anything, 100% of the time.
