Hey everyone, welcome back to GDC. Sorry if you guys felt lost or worried that we'd never come back online. The upgrade finally went through - and this blog is to list a few of the major changes. First off, everything posted after July 18th is lost (PM's, posts, statues, etc.). This is because the failed upgrade Andres attempted last weekend was causing some problems when we tried again, so he had to restore the database to an earlier state and in doing so, lost the most recent data. None-the-le
The mod team has unanimously decided to stop allowing ask.fm links in status updates. We'll be deleting them from now on. We'll also be removing any other anonymous type q&a sites like anonymous questions via tumblr.
The are two major reasons for this change:
1) We're tired of all the promotional links for ask in status updates. There are just way too many that it's nearly removed any value from the status feature. It's become a place simply to promote ask.fm links and everything el
We are looking to promote a new moderator to the team.
* Bachelors degree in Communication and Business Leadership
* 5 years experience leading a team
* Complete and thorough understanding of social/political issues in the world (i.e. intro to Sociology, Psychology 101 and Political Science 100).
* At least 4 different extra-curricular activities (rich white sports like polo, dressage and tennis are a plus)
* Extensive Green Day knowledge (Billy vs. Billie, know who
It's actually real, it finally happened. Liam sent me enough nudes to finally give him the promotion to admin. Starting today he'll be helping run this place and manage the team. He also re-joined the GDA news team recently and will helping run things over there as well.
So begins the process of him slowly kicking me off the team.
Congrats Liam! I'm really excited to finally have you help run things instead of just bitching at me for not doing stuff.
I bought the domain greenday.community which I think is pretty cool. Right now it's just a redirect (try it out: http://greenday.community will bring you back to GDC - specifically back to this blog post just for funsies).
I'm debating whether or not we should change our domain name to greenday.community and drop the .org. I think it would be cool, but also kind of weird since full domains like that aren't really common (they're relatively new). But I also think .org is kind of a weird domai
We have so many dedicated people here on GDC so this is our way of introducing each and every single one to you. I'm sure a lot of you don't know every team member, so this is your way to get to know them. The list is sorted in alphabetical order by their username incase you wanted to skip to a certain team member, but we both know you don't.
Hello fellow humans,
My name is Andres (if you're not Spanish, Mexican or Latino, my name is pronounced on-dress. If you
I'm excited to share that we are promoting Tom to be the next GDC Admin. Tom will be taking a bigger role in helping to run the forum and manage the moderating team.
Tom also wins the award for most promotions in the shortest amount of time. He hasn't even been here a full year, and now he'll be running this place.
Anyone who spends time on GDC knows Tom. I wanted to promote him because it's clear he cares about this place and he cares about its members. I know having him join me and L
The company that makes the forum software, Invision, recently announced that they were no longer going to develop their own chat system. The chat system hasn't had any real updates in quite a long time and they decided they'd be better off putting those resources into making the forums themselves better.
As a result, we've removed the old chat room and have added in a new chat system that you'll find on the bottom right of the window when browsing the forum. Yes, it's meant to be very simi
Earlier today, a situation developed where several established members were ganging up on and bullying a newer member in status updates. Some were suspended for this, and for those of you involved who weren't (you know who you are), consider this your one verbal warning.
Cyber-bullying, including ganging up to attack others, and harassment are not tolerated on GDC in any form. In short, if you bully someone on this site, you will receive a warning and suspension. A verbal warning will not ne
Today we're going to be testing out a change here on the forum which will disable signatures by default for all users.
You still have the option to re-enable signatures if you prefer seeing them, just go your 'Ignore Preferences' in settings and uncheck "Ignore all signatures when reading topics and personal messages".
Why the change?
I have quite the pet-peeve with signatures. They're large, take up more space than content when reading a thread, and slow down page-load times signif
We've upgraded to the latest version of the Invision software. There are three major changes and lots of small ones.
The post editor was completely re-written for better support on mobile and should load more quickly
You can now press Ctrl and right click on the editor to 'Paste' or 'Paste without formatting'
When you're using quick reply, you can
Just over a year ago when the team decided to promote me to media we decided that we were going to redo the whole forum. With the many setbacks including meagupload getting taken down, having to reformat the threads and me just being busy with school in general, its finally finished and here it is.
With this downloads forum we decided to take a different approach to the design. With the original it was split by audio and video then into section for where ever it belonged and then into era. We
I try not to do this often except when it's really needed. Over the last month we've had to pay for licenses and the new skin. In total it was around $200 and I was hoping we could get some help from you guys to cover the extra costs. We already pay for the servers each month on our own (around $200/month just for GDC), but when extra costs like this come up, things get a little tight.
If you can help with any amount, big or small, it'd be greatly appreciated.
We'd like to get your feedback about GDC, the mod team, and ... GDC. Please take a few minutes and fill out this survey (it's only 5 questions) and let us know how we could improve this place. http://gda.polldaddy.com/s/gdc2015 Thanks!
As you can see we've made some new changes here on GDC. We've added a new more modern theme that I think looks pretty awesome.
You can click on the paint brush on the top right to select one of 4 different backgrounds of your choosing.
Still stuff to do. Leave all suggestions in the comments below
We're happy to announce that BeachBum (Val) has been promoted to a global mod.
Bum started out as a chat mod then started helping us with pictures in the media forums and helping organize and clean up the Picture Vault. She's been dedicating a lot of time to help improve this place, and I'm glad to finally have her on board as a global mod.
In December of last year I decided to disable signatures by default for all members plus any members that registered. I felt this change would be a net positive for the forum, and while I still believe that, it's clear that those who care most about signatures felt differently. After some thinking I realized it was unfair for me to make this change without broad support from the forum. As of today I've re-enabled signatures across the forum.
If you'd prefer to hide them again, you can do so
We decided to merge the Green Day News & Green Day Chat subforums. We had originally split them up because we planned on tying GDC and GDA together so we wanted a place to store all the individual stories that we were putting on GDA. We also felt when things were very active it kinda made sense to have everything split up. But I've never been a huge fan of having things too organized, where similar conversations can go in two different places depending on why the topic was made there to begi
This is something the mod team has been talking about for months and I'm finally ready to do something about it. I feel that a lot of the 'Brink of your Vision' forums are now redundant with the introduction of Blogs earlier this year. This is a good place for people to have their work posted and viewed, and I believe it's much better than a thread inside a subforum. Why? Because your newest work is highlighted on the blogs homepage and on the board index, rather than hidden inside your own indi
I'm so excited to announce that @Hermione has been promoted to Admin. I've only been asking her for several years.
She will join Lone and I in helping to run the forum and make decisions about the team and any changes we're looking into.
Hermione has always been very kind and incredibly thoughtful and fair when it came to disagreements either on the team or when discussing issues around the forum. She'll be a wonderful addition to the admins and I'm very excited to have her helping
We've decided to re-organize a little bit on GDC. As many know, I strongly dislike having a long list of subforums on the index. i think it gets confusing and a bit daunting. I've always felt the "Community" and "General" subforums were a little mixed. @Amanda gave me the idea of having an "Interests" subforum to put related content together and I really liked that. So we've created a new subforum "Interests" to put all that stuff together, and removed the "General" category. Shenanigans was mo
Excited to announce today that Cat C.(Cathy) is joining the GDC team as our first-ever Community Manager. She will be helping us out by updating the Facebook Page and GDC Twitter account with interesting stuff around the forum.
She will also be helping us organize contests and create regular stuff for you guys to get involved with. Because this is a new role, exactly how it works out will change over time. The main focus is to help build a stronger community on GDC.
I'd also like to tha
The mod team has often closed threads based on our individual judgments, basically "if we don't think it should be open, we can close it." We decided that this left way too much room for disagreement between the mod team about what should and shouldn't be closed. We've agreed to all follow the below criteria for closing a thread and we want to make sure you guys know when we will.
#1: Duplicate thread: Another similar thread already exists and is moderately active.
#2: Spam thread: We a
