This idea was proposed by John in this blog, where we talked about what to do with the Musicians subforum, and I'm actually pretty interested in it and would like some feedback from the community.
A problem that we have with the creative subforums is that they just simply aren't used much. A handful of people use each section (Brink, Musicians, and Words I Might Have Ate before it was tossed away). I just don't like having subforums that only a small group of people use, that doesn't make se
We've installed an over-the-top Halloween theme for those of you needing a little more to get you into the holiday spirit. Anyone can switch to it now by clicking "Change Theme" on the bottom left of the forum. We'll make it the default theme on the 31st. And probably take it away from you guys some time after that.
We have decided to lower the length of how long a warning point lasts from 60 to 15 days. Along with that, the member will lose access to "Clubs" and "Shenanigans" on their first warning. Sounds like a grand time right? But wait, the member will also be limited to 10 posts per day.
The suspension will continue to increase with multiple warning points within the 15 days. Here is the breakdown of how long the suspensions will be with each warning point:
1 warning point: 24 hour suspension
We decided to merge the Green Day News & Green Day Chat subforums. We had originally split them up because we planned on tying GDC and GDA together so we wanted a place to store all the individual stories that we were putting on GDA. We also felt when things were very active it kinda made sense to have everything split up. But I've never been a huge fan of having things too organized, where similar conversations can go in two different places depending on why the topic was made there to begi
I'm so excited to announce that @Hermione has been promoted to Admin. I've only been asking her for several years.
She will join Lone and I in helping to run the forum and make decisions about the team and any changes we're looking into.
Hermione has always been very kind and incredibly thoughtful and fair when it came to disagreements either on the team or when discussing issues around the forum. She'll be a wonderful addition to the admins and I'm very excited to have her helping
In other words, Khaleesi has been promoted to moderator. She was chosen because of her outstanding resume and her ability to be on GDC when she's sleeping. She will receive her benefits (401k, life, dental) after her 90 day review. At that time, her salary will be increased accordingly.
Welcome to the team and we're happy to have you on board!
(You fuckers better be nice to her.)
I'm excited to announce that we've promoted Bryony to a global mod and she will help us out running the forum. One of the things many of you suggested in the recent GDC evaluations was that we needed more mods from across the Atlantic, so this is a start. She's already been an incredibly helpful team member here on GDC as well as GDA - so I'm glad we could get her on in an even bigger role.
We're also promoting BeachBum (Val) to a media mod today. She'll be in charge of helping us keep the pi
This is something the mod team has been talking about for months and I'm finally ready to do something about it. I feel that a lot of the 'Brink of your Vision' forums are now redundant with the introduction of Blogs earlier this year. This is a good place for people to have their work posted and viewed, and I believe it's much better than a thread inside a subforum. Why? Because your newest work is highlighted on the blogs homepage and on the board index, rather than hidden inside your own indi
While evaluating the usefulness of some sections of the forum, we decided it was time to re-structure some of our content around GDC. We've made the following changes to hopefully encourage better conversation or at least grouping content that makes more sense.
To start off we're completely removing two forums:
This forum never really worked like we hoped it would. While we wanted a place to encourage people to talk about their own music, it ended up working more like a
In December of last year I decided to disable signatures by default for all members plus any members that registered. I felt this change would be a net positive for the forum, and while I still believe that, it's clear that those who care most about signatures felt differently. After some thinking I realized it was unfair for me to make this change without broad support from the forum. As of today I've re-enabled signatures across the forum.
If you'd prefer to hide them again, you can do so
This latest update was just a maintence release to fix a few issues.
however you will notice that we've updated the logo and icons to now fit more accordingly with the trilogy. yay! Thanks to Bum for working on finding a color scheme that worked well.
We've also created a new subforum just for Green day news. more info here.
There are still things I need to do to the skins (update user info that sits on the left of each post, put back links and rep at the top of the site, etc.), but
The company that makes the forum software, Invision, recently announced that they were no longer going to develop their own chat system. The chat system hasn't had any real updates in quite a long time and they decided they'd be better off putting those resources into making the forums themselves better.
As a result, we've removed the old chat room and have added in a new chat system that you'll find on the bottom right of the window when browsing the forum. Yes, it's meant to be very simi
Alright, so we've decided to add in the blog system into GDC. This will allow you guys a place to post your writing. It can be whatever you want. I'd love to see people using it in different ways. If you have something you feel like writing, wehther it be Green Day related or not, I look forward to seeing how you guys use this.
Maybe you have some short stories or poetry you'd like to share, this would be a pretty good place to do it. Maybe you want to write your own thoughts about something
I've made some changes today to notifications. For starters, I've cleaned out all old notifications. Sorry if you may have lost some you hadn't read - but I just had to do it. We had nearly 2 million notifications sitting the database which was causing some long load times. Many of them going back to September of last year and still unread. So I just decided to nuke them all.
From now on the server will only store your most recent 100 notifications. If you reach 100, it will start deleting y
We have to pay $50 to renew our licence (every 6 months) with Invision. This pays for the forums, blogs, and chat. It's also totally understandable that not everyone can afford to help the sites and that's perfectly fine. Being an active member here is already very appreciated and all we really expect of our members. But if you have $5 and feel like giving us hand, that's appreciated too.
UPDATE: We reached the $50 goal. Thanks to everyone who helped!

We have decided to promote Liam to global moderator (from just a media mod). Liam has been incredibly helpful around the forum and since joining the team has done a lot for this place.
I'm excited to have him help us more around the forum. So go visit his profile and bug him.
The full mod list can be found here.
Just over a year ago when the team decided to promote me to media we decided that we were going to redo the whole forum. With the many setbacks including meagupload getting taken down, having to reformat the threads and me just being busy with school in general, its finally finished and here it is.
With this downloads forum we decided to take a different approach to the design. With the original it was split by audio and video then into section for where ever it belonged and then into era. We
If you've read the GDCcrets thread in the last day you've read about an issue that has come up with one user harassing others with explicit comments after being told to stop. The mod team takes these reports very seriously, but we agree that we took too long in this case and we have been talking about ways to fix this.
First off, we will institute an immediate 24 hour suspension once we get a report about another member harassing someone else. During this time we will look into the issue, g
I've just finished installing the most recent update for Invision Power Board. There have been no major changes. Just some tweaks to improve functionality and a lot of background changes to make the forum run smoother and more quickly in the long run (probably won't be noticeable to most users).
Note: I'm currently working on upgrading the light theme. It will be ready to use sometime tomorrow.

When you get to the bottom a forum you now have a "Load More Topics" link (ima
We have decided to change the length of suspensions handed out when we give warnings. The old system was more on a "case by case" basis after your second warning. Previous we would decide how long it should be for (it usually was 7 days, then 15 days, then 30 days). Here's the new setup
1 warning point: 24 hour suspension
2 warning points: 48 hour suspension
3 warning points: 72 hour suspension
4 warning points: 96 hour suspension
5 warning points: Account will be permanently banned.
We're back. We've upgraded GDC to a new more powerful server, that just so happens to (more importantly) cost us less per month.
If you saw a white page for a little while as you tried to load GDC, that means you were looking at the old server. Internet providers have to log IP changes when a site changes from one server to a new one, that process (called DNS propagation) can take anywhere from a few minutes to 48 hours. It just depends on each provider and how quickly they realize the chang
We've installed a new feature to show you when you have friends online. We hope this will help encourage people to participate in parts of the forum where their friends are, or at the very least, as an indication of when someone you care about is active so you can leave them a comment or message if you want. When friends come up, you'll see a blue notification with this icon at the top of the site. The icon won't show up if none of your friends are online.
Clicking that will show a pane
