Today we're going to be testing out a change here on the forum which will disable signatures by default for all users.
You still have the option to re-enable signatures if you prefer seeing them, just go your 'Ignore Preferences' in settings and uncheck "Ignore all signatures when reading topics and personal messages".
Why the change?
I have quite the pet-peeve with signatures. They're large, take up more space than content when reading a thread, and slow down page-load times significantly. Not to mention the fact that often users will use an image host that Google marks as harmful, then when those users post in a thread, people using Google Chrome get a warning that the page may contain a virus or malware.
I think a thread is much more readable without signatures turned on. It makes content easier to read without having to scroll page giant signatures.
It might take a little getting used to, but I'm fairly certain the far majority of users will either not care or will prefer it this way. For those of you that prefer signatures and want to use them feel free to change your settings.
This is also a good time to remind everyone that if you do decide to use signatures, we have a size-limit rule which we will be enforcing. Get more info on that here.

We're happy to announce that BeachBum (Val) has been promoted to a global mod.
Bum started out as a chat mod then started helping us with pictures in the media forums and helping organize and clean up the Picture Vault. She's been dedicating a lot of time to help improve this place, and I'm glad to finally have her on board as a global mod.
We have decided to remove the Club Leaders special group we formed when we launched the Clubs subforum last year.
This group was initially meant as a simple type of incentive and recognition for users who started a club. After seeing it in action we don't believe this group is really necessary and wasn't accomplishing what we hoped it would.
Any users who were part of the Club Leaders group have now been defaulted back to the the standard Members group.
Please leave a comment if you have any feedback on this issue.
There's a lot that going on around the forum now, so mods and admins can't always see every bad thing that happens, that's where we need your help.
On the forum:
If you are browsing around the forum and you come across something like a duplicate thread or someone being a dick or breaking the rules then please use the report system. The report button can be found on every post, PM, blog and every members the profile. On posts and PM's it is located at the bottom right hand corner of each one and looks likes this . On a members profile is it located at the bottom right hand corner with the words "Report This Member". On a blog post its on the right hand side under the post and on every comment. Clicking any of those buttons will take you to a page where you can fill a quick little report as to why you think it should be reported.
This sends a message to the mod team telling them to look at whatever content was sent and to take care of it. If you report something in a personal message, the mod viewing the report will only be able to see the message you reported. If you are unsure if something should be reported or not, report it and the team can either take care of it or dismiss it. Don't hesitate to send a message to any mod and admin for advice.
In The Chat:
We can't always have a chat mod in the chat, so we depend on you guys to report stuff that needs to be taken care of. If this is happening in the public chat use the report button on the users profile page and an active mod can step in. If it's going on in private chat then we suggest you take a screen shot of the issue and send a personal message to a chat mod so it can be taken care of.
Please do not stress if you don't hear back about a report, all reports will be reviewed by more than one member of the team and every report is taken seriously.
Thank you very much to anyone who goes about this the right way so we can take care of offenders quickly and improve the experience everyone has on GDC
Over the past few months we have been busy promoting some active chat members to help out over on the chat and I thought I'd introduce them to you today.
Firstly I would like to introduce Sleeper Agent. who joined the team back in July. His name is Riley and comes from a little island known as New Zealand. He also plays in a band called Passive Nation so don't forget to check them out.
Our next addition to the team is HolidayContradiction. She joined the team last month (September). Her name is Marte and comes all the way from Norway, I believe she is GDC's first team member from Norway.
The latest edition to the team is Lindsay. It was decided by the chat mod team to add her to their team as she has been an active member of the chat for the past few years. She comes from Canada as well as our other fellow Canadian mods.
They will be joining the team alongside Lone.
Please make them all feel welcome by popping by the chat to say hi or even bugging them on their profiles.
Welcome to the team guys!
As some of you tend to notice, at some points features get disabled for a short period of time on days when there's big news. Well there's a reason for this:
The server GDC is hosted on can only hold a certain amount of users on at one time. Of course the times we get too many members online is when a big announcement is made (Oh Love being released, new songs being released/leaked, etc).
When a lot of users start to flood the site it slows the server down to the point where it can take a while to load (or be totally unresponsive). One way of preventing this is to upgrade the server, but that means more money for something we don't always need. The way we try to prevent the site from slowing is by putting the site on a mode where it starts to disable less-important features such as viewing peoples profiles, status updates, search, watched content and stuff like that. Basically anything extra that isn't required to read and reply to topics.
Of course this won't always prevent the site from slowing down, but it is the best we can do to try and make sure you guys still have access at that time. So if you notice a huge surge in traffic (or a major announcement) you can expect this to happen from time to time. It usually will last for an hour or less, but updates about it will be posted on the forum Twitter account @GDCforum. When this happens, most people start to worry that something they did is preventing them from seeing stuff, so if you see any posts like that, please help explain to users what's going on.
Just wanted to clear this up for all the users who ask when this does happen.
As you guys know we've been having some serious issues with the server lately. Last week we had to hire a professional server administrator take a look to see what was going on. It ended up costing us $150 to have him optimize the server and try to figure out why we've been having so many issues. It was definitely worth the cost, but $150 is a lot considering we already pay nearly $200/month just to keep the forum online.
So I thought I'd ask the community for help. If you can donate a few bucks it will go a long way in helping us keep the cost of running this place as low as possible.
You can donate via PayPal by clicking the button below. Thanks in advance to everyone who helps us out.
If you have any questions - please feel free to ask in the comments.
Update 7:42pm EST: Thank you all for helping us out. We reached our goal Of course, if you still feel like donating, you can, and that money will go to help pay the server bill for the next month. Thanks again!
The mod team has decided to allow members to change their display name once per year. You can now change your username in your settings without having to PM an admin to do it.
This option is open to all members, but please remember you can only change it once. Be sure to pick something you're going to be happy with for a long time, and be sure you don't make any typos.
Let us know if you have any questions or problems. If you see a member ask how to change their name, be sure to let them know they can do this on their own now without having to have an admin do it.
The past few weeks a lot of you may have noticed you haven't been able to access the site at certain times because the server crashing. Part of the problem has been due to some of the large threads that are very active and the strain those threads have on the server.
Because of this we have restarted a lot of threads over 1,000 posts. Not all, but mostly the very active ones.
We hope this will help some of our problems with the server and load-times.
Very happy to announce that Katarina will be joining the team as a new moderator. Because everyone else on the team hates Green Day, she'll be mostly focusing on the Green Day Chat area of the forum that all the other mods actively avoid.
Katarina, glad to have you on the team, and looking forward to crushing noobs with you when these albums start rolling out.
This is something the mod team has been talking about for months and I'm finally ready to do something about it. I feel that a lot of the 'Brink of your Vision' forums are now redundant with the introduction of Blogs earlier this year. This is a good place for people to have their work posted and viewed, and I believe it's much better than a thread inside a subforum. Why? Because your newest work is highlighted on the blogs homepage and on the board index, rather than hidden inside your own individual thread where it's much less likely to be seen.
The blogs have been a little more quiet than we hoped, but we also haven't done enough to highlight some quality blogs (something that we will be doing much more frequently very soon).
So we want to transition people over to the blogs from the 'Brink' forum, but we're going to try it out first with literature posts (lyrics, poems, stories, etc.) posted in "Words I Might Have Ate." We feel the Blog system works very well for written text (duh) and would fit the 'Words' forum best to start off. So we're going to make the 'Words' forum an archive, read-only place for 3 months before removing it. That should give people plenty of time to move the work they want over to the Blogs system.
I'm interested in making this change in the next week. First, we'd like some feedback from you guys just to make sure there isn't something we're overlooking in this change. If you have any concerns or suggestions, leave them below. Also, like this post if you think this is a good idea. I like knowing how active members feel about changes one way or the other.
Really excited to announce that Ben (Tre's Busted Drumkit) is joining the mod team once again after a short break. We're excited to have him back, and look forward to him beating the hell out all of you.
I've finally got the Facebook Connect features working on GDC. You can now tie your Facebook account in with GDC.
"But why the fuck would I want to do that?"
Fair question, but please watch your language. When you tie your account together your status updates posted on Facebook will automatically update your GDC status and vice versa (or you can choose in your settings to only do one way or the other). Tying your accounts together will also allow you to login in to GDC via your Facebook account. So if you're on a computer where you're already logged into Facebook, you can visit GDA and click the Facebook logo on the top left of the page to login.
To do this you'll have to actually tie your accounts together. First login to Facebook on another tab, then come back and go to your GDC settings (click your name on the top left, click My Settings) then click Manage Facebook > Then click the "Login with Facebook" button.
The page will reload and ask you what options you want to use regarding status updates and privacy options.
So there you go. Try it out, and let me know if you have any questions.
Yay for easier logging in
I'm excited to announce that we've promoted Bryony to a global mod and she will help us out running the forum. One of the things many of you suggested in the recent GDC evaluations was that we needed more mods from across the Atlantic, so this is a start. She's already been an incredibly helpful team member here on GDC as well as GDA - so I'm glad we could get her on in an even bigger role.
We're also promoting BeachBum (Val) to a media mod today. She'll be in charge of helping us keep the pictures forums clean and up to date. Bum has been helping us out with the GDA pic vault and of course many of you already know her as a chat mod. In her new position she'll be helping enforce the rules of the pic forum and kick your ass if you break the rules
Welcome both of you to these new positions. Thanks for helping us out.
We'd like for you guys to take just a few minutes to fill out this quick 4 question survey about GDC. Let us know how you feel about the forum and give us suggestions on ways we can improve and make the forum better for you.
The surveys are anonymous so we don't know who submit them - so be honest. This is the best way for us to get some real feedback from you guys without anyone feeling worried or pressured about what they're writing.
The admin and moderating team will take all your suggestions and consider them as we look to improve the forum in the coming weeks and months ahead.
I've just finished installing the most recent update for Invision Power Board. There have been no major changes. Just some tweaks to improve functionality and a lot of background changes to make the forum run smoother and more quickly in the long run (probably won't be noticeable to most users).
Note: I'm currently working on upgrading the light theme. It will be ready to use sometime tomorrow.
Load More Topics
When you get to the bottom a forum you now have a "Load More Topics" link (image below) which will pull in the next page of updates without having to reload the entire page.
The old "Reputation Given/Recieved" has been redesigned and is now built into the software (it used to be a third party addon). To see where you recieved Likes, visit your profile and visit the new "Likes" section. Or you can click your Rep number at the top of the page next to the green check mark. That will take you directly to the new Likes center.
You can now share a topic on Twitter or Facebook directly from GDC. There are now icons at the bottom of each thread to allow you to do so. People will need an account to view any topics that are not in Green Day or General Chat, but you can share the topic title if you wish to.
Blogs have also been slightly redesigned to better fit with the overall theme of GDC.
When a topic is tagged (such as "Podcast" or "Song of the Week") you'll now see a list of related stories at the bottom of a thread. For example, look at the bottom of this thread for the latest SoTW. You'll now see other related topics with the same tag. Very cool, and I can see us making more use of more tags in the future to help organize info.
The warning system has been replaced with a newer system. While it work similarly, it's now a little more automated. Instead of a percentage it goes off Warning Points. Getting Warned will leave you with 1 Point, your account automatically suspended for 24 hours. 2 Points will give a 48 hour warning, and so on. The mod team will talk about the most fair way to deal with points in this new system.
I'm sure there are some more improvements I've missed. If you find anything that doesn't work like we expect, post a comment below and let me know. I'll add it to the to-do list below.
Update and re-install light skin
Fix bug on mobile skin that doesn't allow to change themes
I have to upgrade the forum software, so I'll be doing that tomorrow. The forum will be offline starting at 1pm EST for 1-3 hours depending on how much work needs to be done.
You guys can follow the forum on twitter @GDCforum for progress during the update.
As some of you noticed, I did the change in the middle of the night. There will be some errors until I have a chance to make one more upgrade, but it'll have to wait till tomorrow.
Green Day is hitting the road again later this year so we're going to do what we can to offer you guys the best place to talk about everything. We've just finished setting up the tour forum for the Summer 2012 tour, covering Japanese and European festival shows.
I encourage all of you to go into the tour forum and find a topic for the show you're going to. Make plans to meet-up, share details about the show location, all that.
We'll continue adding threads for tour dates as they're announced.
Leave a comment or send any mod or admin a PM if you have any problems or suggestions.
Visit the Summer 2012 Tour forum now.
We've updated the forum guidelines which for a while now have just been "Don't be a dick". These are the rules that the mod team will follow and enforce.
We have decided to promote Liam to global moderator (from just a media mod). Liam has been incredibly helpful around the forum and since joining the team has done a lot for this place.
I'm excited to have him help us more around the forum. So go visit his profile and bug him.
The full mod list can be found here.
Alright, so we've decided to add in the blog system into GDC. This will allow you guys a place to post your writing. It can be whatever you want. I'd love to see people using it in different ways. If you have something you feel like writing, wehther it be Green Day related or not, I look forward to seeing how you guys use this.
Maybe you have some short stories or poetry you'd like to share, this would be a pretty good place to do it. Maybe you want to write your own thoughts about something Green Day related but can't quite figure out where to do it, you should try it here.
You can also assign other members the ability to write on your blog - so you guys can group together and publish one thing.
I really don't know what this will be yet, but I'd love to see how people are using it and make sure we find a useful way to highlight stuff posted here.
Also, let me know if you guys have any problems questions or anything else. I'm brand new to this as well, so who knows how it works. Hah.
To start your own blog (you're only allowed 1 blog) go to the Blog Homepage and click "Create Blog" on the top right.
