As some of you tend to notice, at some points features get disabled for a short period of time on days when there's big news. Well there's a reason for this:
The server GDC is hosted on can only hold a certain amount of users on at one time. Of course the times we get too many members online is when a big announcement is made (Oh Love being released, new songs being released/leaked, etc).
When a lot of users start to flood the site it slows the server down to the point where it can take a while to load (or be totally unresponsive). One way of preventing this is to upgrade the server, but that means more money for something we don't always need. The way we try to prevent the site from slowing is by putting the site on a mode where it starts to disable less-important features such as viewing peoples profiles, status updates, search, watched content and stuff like that. Basically anything extra that isn't required to read and reply to topics.
Of course this won't always prevent the site from slowing down, but it is the best we can do to try and make sure you guys still have access at that time. So if you notice a huge surge in traffic (or a major announcement) you can expect this to happen from time to time. It usually will last for an hour or less, but updates about it will be posted on the forum Twitter account @GDCforum. When this happens, most people start to worry that something they did is preventing them from seeing stuff, so if you see any posts like that, please help explain to users what's going on.
Just wanted to clear this up for all the users who ask when this does happen.
The mod team has often closed threads based on our individual judgments, basically "if we don't think it should be open, we can close it." We decided that this left way too much room for disagreement between the mod team about what should and shouldn't be closed. We've agreed to all follow the below criteria for closing a thread and we want to make sure you guys know when we will.
#1: Duplicate thread: Another similar thread already exists and is moderately active.
#2: Spam thread: We all like our fun, but there can be too much of a good thing.
#3: Includes content we don't allow (copyrighted material, porn, private info related to Green Day, paparazzi stuff)
#4: List type replies: (What's your favorite song, favorite member, etc.) Everyone just replies with a couple words and there's no incentive for conversation.
#5: A blatantly stupid thread that shows no potential for engaging conversation. Will only be closed after more mods have agreed it should be.
There are a couple items on that list that still require us to use our own judgement (#4 and #5 especially). In those situations we'll talk it over with other mods to decide if it should or shouldn't be closed.
We have a topic in the mod forum where any one of us can ask the rest of the team for feedback about a thread and whether it should be closed. We also use the thread to challenge each other if one of us doesn't think a thread should have been closed.
When we close a thread from now on we will link to this post along with the rule number that correlates to why it was closed. If you feel like we closed a thread that should remain open, I encourage you to use the Report button on the mods closing post and give us your reason. The mod team will discuss it and if we agree we'll reverse our decision.
Hopefully this will clear up some of the vagueness about what we close. If you guys see a thread that breaks one of these rules and you think should be closed, we would prefer that you use the Report button and send it to us, rather than posting in the thread. A mod will take action on your report as soon as we can.
Musicians Lounge just simply isn't working the way we hoped. I'm fairly certain that we're going to just get rid of it all together. It didn't work as "The Underground" when it was called that, and it's not working now. Even when GDC is active, it's still under-utilized and kinda feels like we're just pushing people off to a subforum that's hardly read for the sake of putting it there. Right now there's only a few people that use it regularly.
So - let's talk about alternatives. I'm open to ideas. Here's my current thought:
We close it down. We'll just close the threads in there to "archive" them, move them to General Chat so they can be found later if anyone has stuff there they want to keep. People can open more specific topics in General Chat ("guitar tips", or "Share Your Work", etc.) and if people want a dedicated place to post all their music - they can do so in a blog.
I think that system will work best. Any thoughts on this?
I'm very happy to share that we've brought two new people on to the GDC Mod Team, inthehallwaynow (also known as Matt, but because we already have two other Matt's on the team, we've been calling him hallwaymatt), and 'Second favourite son' (I don't know your real name, so I've just been calling you SFS).
Things are starting to get really busy around here and we really wanted some new people on board to help specifically with the Green Day sections.
Welcome to both of you! Very happy to have you guys on board!
In December of last year I decided to disable signatures by default for all members plus any members that registered. I felt this change would be a net positive for the forum, and while I still believe that, it's clear that those who care most about signatures felt differently. After some thinking I realized it was unfair for me to make this change without broad support from the forum. As of today I've re-enabled signatures across the forum.
If you'd prefer to hide them again, you can do so your "Ignore Preferences" by checking the box near the top of that page that says "Ignore all signatures when reading topics and personal messages".
Because we've re-enabled them site-wide, we've decided we will be enforcing the sig rules more strictly. Here are those rules:
Only one animated gif per signature.
Sigs are limited to 700px (width) x 250px (height) total (which means any text + images you have must be smaller than 250px tall). Click the spoiler below for a sample of that size
Nothing NSFW (not safe for work) in signatures and avatars. Don't forget users often visit GDC at school and work. We don't need anyone getting in trouble because someone thought the whole world should see Billie Joe's dick in their sig.
If you're breaking any of these rules, expect a moderator to send you a PM. If anyone has a signature that's obnoxiously large we will likely just delete it ourselves then let you know why we did. If you guys see a signature you think is way too big, please use the Report This Member link on the bottom right of a users profile so the mods can take care of it.
Feel free to leave any comments or suggestions below.
The mod team is interested in hearing your feedback about GDC and the mod team. We want you guys to be completely honest and up-front with us, so we're taking this survey anonymously here
There are only 3 questions. Please be constructive with any criticism you have. The entire team will be reading these over to see how we can improve GDC and improve how we run the forum.
We are looking to promote a new moderator to the team.
* Bachelors degree in Communication and Business Leadership
* 5 years experience leading a team
* Complete and thorough understanding of social/political issues in the world (i.e. intro to Sociology, Psychology 101 and Political Science 100).
* At least 4 different extra-curricular activities (rich white sports like polo, dressage and tennis are a plus)
* Extensive Green Day knowledge (Billy vs. Billie, know who Jaff Matika is, and Dookie was the first album they released)
This job is a full time paid position. Pay is rated at $0-125,000 per year, depending on experience.
Ok but really, here's what we need:
* Someone who is active throughout the forum (not just Green Day sections, not just Advice and General)
* You like stopping by most days
* You think something can be done to improve GDC
* You're able to deal with conflict (contrary to popular belief, the mod team actually does not always agree unanimously on what we should do)
* Someone who agrees that my friends should never ever been warned.
Applications are now closed. Thanks to all interested in helping out.
Due to the inactivity of Video & Audio and Picture forums in Other Artists, we have decided to go ahead and remove both subforums.
Both forums only have a few topics that are fairly active as well as they have not been looked after in many years causing it to be a complete mess with duplicate threads and threads that aren't suppose to be there.
From this day forward, if you wish to request/post in audio, video, or pictures from an artist, you can do so in their respective thread in Other Artists. Since none of the threads will be merged, feel free to repost anything from the subforums to their respective thread.
These aren't major changes but it will help keep more things in one place.
I've just finished installing the most recent update for Invision Power Board. There have been no major changes. Just some tweaks to improve functionality and a lot of background changes to make the forum run smoother and more quickly in the long run (probably won't be noticeable to most users).
Note: I'm currently working on upgrading the light theme. It will be ready to use sometime tomorrow.
Load More Topics
When you get to the bottom a forum you now have a "Load More Topics" link (image below) which will pull in the next page of updates without having to reload the entire page.
The old "Reputation Given/Recieved" has been redesigned and is now built into the software (it used to be a third party addon). To see where you recieved Likes, visit your profile and visit the new "Likes" section. Or you can click your Rep number at the top of the page next to the green check mark. That will take you directly to the new Likes center.
You can now share a topic on Twitter or Facebook directly from GDC. There are now icons at the bottom of each thread to allow you to do so. People will need an account to view any topics that are not in Green Day or General Chat, but you can share the topic title if you wish to.
Blogs have also been slightly redesigned to better fit with the overall theme of GDC.
When a topic is tagged (such as "Podcast" or "Song of the Week") you'll now see a list of related stories at the bottom of a thread. For example, look at the bottom of this thread for the latest SoTW. You'll now see other related topics with the same tag. Very cool, and I can see us making more use of more tags in the future to help organize info.
The warning system has been replaced with a newer system. While it work similarly, it's now a little more automated. Instead of a percentage it goes off Warning Points. Getting Warned will leave you with 1 Point, your account automatically suspended for 24 hours. 2 Points will give a 48 hour warning, and so on. The mod team will talk about the most fair way to deal with points in this new system.
I'm sure there are some more improvements I've missed. If you find anything that doesn't work like we expect, post a comment below and let me know. I'll add it to the to-do list below.
Update and re-install light skin
Fix bug on mobile skin that doesn't allow to change themes
We've updated the forum guidelines which for a while now have just been "Don't be a dick". These are the rules that the mod team will follow and enforce.
Really excited to announce that Ben (Tre's Busted Drumkit) is joining the mod team once again after a short break. We're excited to have him back, and look forward to him beating the hell out all of you.
We've finally gotten around to moving old tour topics from this year into the read-only Previous Tour Dates section. Since all those shows happened more than 3 months ago, there's not really much to continue discussing. Instead we'll keep them as read-only topics so people can look back on them in the future if they wish to. They've been put into subforums for each region, which includes topics for shows going back to 2009.
Right now the On The Road forum only includes upcoming dates in Australia.
Here's something new I'm thinking of doing. Every Saturday posting the top 10 most active topics this week. If you're interested, I've also started tweeting the top most active thread each day (not in the tour forum) over on our twitter (@GDCforum). Let me know if this is something you think I should keep doing or if it's just taking up space. Wasn't sure if people would find this interesting.
This weeks' top 10 list

I'm excited to share that we are promoting Tom to be the next GDC Admin. Tom will be taking a bigger role in helping to run the forum and manage the moderating team.
Tom also wins the award for most promotions in the shortest amount of time. He hasn't even been here a full year, and now he'll be running this place.
Anyone who spends time on GDC knows Tom. I wanted to promote him because it's clear he cares about this place and he cares about its members. I know having him join me and Lone to make decisions about how we handle things on GDC will be a huge benefit to the entire community.
Congrats, Tom! Very happy to have you help us out.
Hello folks, I'd like to introduce you to your new moderator: @Todd.
You may recognize him most from the GD downloads section but in the background he has been active in our team discussions. Due to his consistent activities we decided we should give him full moderator powers. He has been a media mod since May of 2015.
Congrats to being more orange buddy!
I've finally got the Facebook Connect features working on GDC. You can now tie your Facebook account in with GDC.
"But why the fuck would I want to do that?"
Fair question, but please watch your language. When you tie your account together your status updates posted on Facebook will automatically update your GDC status and vice versa (or you can choose in your settings to only do one way or the other). Tying your accounts together will also allow you to login in to GDC via your Facebook account. So if you're on a computer where you're already logged into Facebook, you can visit GDA and click the Facebook logo on the top left of the page to login.
To do this you'll have to actually tie your accounts together. First login to Facebook on another tab, then come back and go to your GDC settings (click your name on the top left, click My Settings) then click Manage Facebook > Then click the "Login with Facebook" button.
The page will reload and ask you what options you want to use regarding status updates and privacy options.
So there you go. Try it out, and let me know if you have any questions.
Yay for easier logging in
The past few weeks a lot of you may have noticed you haven't been able to access the site at certain times because the server crashing. Part of the problem has been due to some of the large threads that are very active and the strain those threads have on the server.
Because of this we have restarted a lot of threads over 1,000 posts. Not all, but mostly the very active ones.
We hope this will help some of our problems with the server and load-times.
Just over a year ago when the team decided to promote me to media we decided that we were going to redo the whole forum. With the many setbacks including meagupload getting taken down, having to reformat the threads and me just being busy with school in general, its finally finished and here it is.
With this downloads forum we decided to take a different approach to the design. With the original it was split by audio and video then into section for where ever it belonged and then into era. We’ve decided that we were going to combine audio and video together and have it as one forum. As for the download links, we’ve split it by era and each show with a recording has its own thread. You can now discuss a recording in its own thread. For requesting or posting a recordings, just put it in the main page stating whether you want audio or video of it
Regular members won’t have access to make threads in any of the era specific forum, so if they want something added there they have to make the thread in the main section then a mod will move it to the appropriate forum. It’s also been decided that the only recordings that make it into the actual downloads are recordings that are either professionally shot, complete or very near complete.
The way the downloads at set up is in each era they are sorted by year/month/date with the title to keep it all in order. When you click on the thread you want you will see a setlist from the entire show, though the recording may have all the tracks in it. Underneath that you have the recordings listed. It will have Source # followed by whether it's audio or video and what type of recording and which number it can be. There’s four types:
AMT – Video shot by an audience member from in the crowd
PRO – Video shot by a professional company with
AUD – Audio recording from an audience member in the
SBD – Audio taken from the sound desk.
Under that you have “Screens” (this is only for video recordings) where it will have links to screenshots of the footage. Next you’ll have “Notes” which will be stuff to do with the recording like where a video is shot from or what songs are missing are have cuts. Under that is “Ratings”, one for audio and video, both out of 5 starts. Please keep in mind that the quality rating depends on the type of recording (example – a 5 start AUD recording won’t be as good as a 5 star SBD recording). Then we have “Links” these are of course links to download the recording. It will indicate what format you’re downloading it in and from what site. We also have a part for artwork that people can feel free to make for that recording for people who like that stuff.
Is the section complete? Of course not, we still have a lot more to do but this is where you can help. A lot of my information is taken from GDTorrents, their live guide and DVD guide and my own common knowledge, for some recordings I couldn’t find info about so I had to guess. We will be keeping the previous download section archived for a bit. What you guys can do is if you see any recordings, info, screen shots, incorrect ratings or something else, post it in the thread for that show and it can be fixed.
Now to the download links, there are currently very little links (a few will be pinned to give you an idea) in there for the simple fact that megaupload got taken down and we lost a lot. These are ones I found from other members on this forum. We are now going to start uploading all our stuff to mega.co.nz mainly in MP3 (for audio) and MP4 (for video) formats. If you have another link to the recording in a different format and/or on a different site (including GDTorrent), feel free to post it (preferably on mega) and I’ll put it in the links as well. Uploading will be done over a period of time so please be patient and bear with us.
So that’s pretty much it, if you have any thoughts or question then feel free to comment or shoot me a PM.
The mod team has unanimously decided to stop allowing ask.fm links in status updates. We'll be deleting them from now on. We'll also be removing any other anonymous type q&a sites like anonymous questions via tumblr.
The are two major reasons for this change:
1) We're tired of all the promotional links for ask in status updates. There are just way too many that it's nearly removed any value from the status feature. It's become a place simply to promote ask.fm links and everything else is quickly drowned out. It's just tiring seeing the same exact links all the time.
2) We're tired of all the associated negativity that has come from allowing anonymous comments away from GDC. There's a group of people who mostly enjoy talking shit about others, stirring up crap, then dragging it all back to GDC by promoting their content. Then they play innocent like they've done nothing wrong. People will always talk shit about other people, but doing so anonymously and publicly isn't helping anyone at all.
Starting today we'll begin deleting status' to ask.fm or anonymous questionnaire sites. If you do it repeatedly you will be given a warning to stop.
Today we're going to be testing out a change here on the forum which will disable signatures by default for all users.
You still have the option to re-enable signatures if you prefer seeing them, just go your 'Ignore Preferences' in settings and uncheck "Ignore all signatures when reading topics and personal messages".
Why the change?
I have quite the pet-peeve with signatures. They're large, take up more space than content when reading a thread, and slow down page-load times significantly. Not to mention the fact that often users will use an image host that Google marks as harmful, then when those users post in a thread, people using Google Chrome get a warning that the page may contain a virus or malware.
I think a thread is much more readable without signatures turned on. It makes content easier to read without having to scroll page giant signatures.
It might take a little getting used to, but I'm fairly certain the far majority of users will either not care or will prefer it this way. For those of you that prefer signatures and want to use them feel free to change your settings.
This is also a good time to remind everyone that if you do decide to use signatures, we have a size-limit rule which we will be enforcing. Get more info on that here.
You guys have voiced your opinions and now here it is. The “Words I Might Have Ate” subforum returns under the “Brink of Your Vision” forum. With the return of this forum, we now ask that writers post their writing soley in “Words I Might Have Ate.” There are a couple rules to read so please check them out here.
I hope everyone checks it out and enjoy the new subforum!
We have decided to remove the Club Leaders special group we formed when we launched the Clubs subforum last year.
This group was initially meant as a simple type of incentive and recognition for users who started a club. After seeing it in action we don't believe this group is really necessary and wasn't accomplishing what we hoped it would.
Any users who were part of the Club Leaders group have now been defaulted back to the the standard Members group.
Please leave a comment if you have any feedback on this issue.
Now that the dust is starting to settle with the upgrade, I'd like to ask for your help in covering some of the costs.
In total the upgrade cost around $150 more than we usually spend on GDC - here's a breakdown of the costs:
New theme: $55
Paid Plugins: $46
Mega Account re-activated for downloads: $15
There were some other fees, but since it was my own fuck-up I'm not asking for any help with that.
If you help out with more than $5 you'll be put into a special group to disable all GDC ads for 1 year. We might add some extras later on for this group - just not sure yet.

Thanks to everyone willing to help us out! I completely understand that not everyone is in a position to do so, that's alright. Just keep being awesome and participating around GDC.
