The rocks are rough underfoot, but I would imagine much more so to someone who has gone with shoes all summer. As soon as school is out it is a rarity to see me with shoes on. Today is no different. My stomach lurches as I look over the edge, adrenaline and exhilaration run through me with a shiver. I love the feeling. I hate the feeling.
I step back.
"Just come in! I did it!" They call from the water. Encouragement, or a threat?
I step back further.
"Come on, it's really easy just-"
I take two steps and launch myself off the edge. No I love the feeling, it courses through my brains with a fierce pleasure. Half way down I realize I hate the feeling.
The horizon is rushing away from me, I have no choice but to complete the jump and I scream, the air barely able to escape my lungs and suddenly it's over.
I rise up to the surface and swell with confidence.
The first time is always the hardest.
But you'll never stop chasing the first high.
