Lyrics: West of the Moon

Posted by Comrade , in Lyrics, Poetry 26 January 2013 · 302 views

These are some lyrics that started life about 4 years ago with what in this version is the chorus. The verses came about as various lines of poetry and an amalgamation of a handful of stanzas I've written over the last 8 or so months, but when I set about really working on making it all fit together as a poem, it all occurred to me to work as a set of lyrics. As a poetic writer, I've always found myself inspired mostly by the 19th century romance writers; Byron, Baudelaire, Wilde etc; that dark, gothic romance seated in the senses and the sensual; faith and the forbidden fruit - the things that really make humans feel alive but can bring us closes to death; our addictions, desires, obsessions and the evocative imagery of love and death. It captivates me. So this, as poetry, more than much of my writing is a true ode to that style. It influences everything but I rarely indulge fully. With this, I didn't hold back.

Below are the words as both the lyrics they became and the poetry that much of it was intended to be. I'd love to get some feedback; I want to know how it makes you feel, what it makes you think of and see. I think writing always reflects something of yourself back at you, and when the words are sex and love, things we all have in common, it's even more interesting to hear of personal interpretations. So;

West of the Moon

Her eyes grew dark with lust’s cruelty;
Clawing love from my veins, dripping with beauty
Piercing my flesh with words of endless bliss
Playing the storm of passion for that sacred kiss
Breaking my heart with each insane embrace
And drowning in love just for that final taste
Of fear that comes with burning yourself alive;
Devils and Angels making peace to align

Her sweet kiss was sweeter than wine
I’m not afraid to say that I love you
Her cold embrace burned me like a fire
I’m not afraid to admit that I love you

When I said my heart was beating for two
I swore that I’d find you west of the Moon

I didn't want to hear another word she said
Each sound escaping from those lips drew me to her bed
Where she begged to know me in the Biblical Sense
When the pain of my pleasure was her recompense
The touch of the ancient on a heart so fresh
Left the mark of the devil burned upon my flesh
Wicked was the poison and wicked was the cure;
That cleansed my doubts that she was pure

Her sweet kiss was sweeter than wine
I’m not afraid to say that I love you
Her cold embrace burned me like a fire
I’m not afraid to admit that I love you
Descend the seven circles now

Come and be cursed with me
Our sacrament of love is near
And I fear I won’t see you again
Reach out your hand and take me
Our sacrament of love is here
And I fear I won’t see you again

When I said my heart was beating for two
I swore that I’d find you west of the Moon

Ardour

Her eyes became dark with ardour’s cruelty;
Clawing the love in my veins with beauty,
Piercing my flesh with promises of bliss;
That she’d sooth my soul with a sacred kiss

A broken heart with each insane embrace
And drowning in devotion to her taste;
A poison of the mind that never dies;
Devils and Angels making love align

I couldn't bear to suffer a word she said,
 Still silent, her lips drew me to her bed
Craving my heart in the Biblical Sense
Knowing my pleasure was her recompense

The touch of the ancient on one so fresh
Left the Devil branded upon my flesh
Wicked was the poison that burned like fire;
Pain for the fool who is cursed by desire

I love dark concepts and fully embracing and sorta just letting go, so I really loved this.

The picture that was painted in my head by this was sort of a seductress. The dangerous beauty that you know you shouldn't go near but you do anyway, and once she's got you there's no way back out.
