No this hasnt been done yet, yes Andres said it could be, and this is for Gerg after our lengthly discussion about this song..

This song has so much meaning to me I cant even begin to describe it. I can relate to almost every single line in this song. It is impossible for me to pick a favorite lyric from this song and when I listen to it, it never feels like a 9 minute song.

QUOTE
I. JESUS OF SUBURBIA
I'm the son of rage and love,
The Jesus of suburbia,
From the bible of "none of the above",
On a steady diet of soda pop and ritalin,
No one ever died for my sins in hell,
As far as I can tell,
At least the ones I got away with

But there's nothing wrong with me,
This is how I'm supposed to be,
In a land of make believe,
That don't believe in me

Get my television fix,
Sitting on my crucifix,
The living room in my private womb,
While the Mom's and Brad's are away,
To fall in love and fall in debt,
To alcohol and cigarettes and Mary Jane,
To keep me insane and doing someone else's cocaine

II. CITY OF THE DAMNED
At the center of the earth,
In the parking lot,
Of the 7-11 where I was taught,
The motto was just a lie

It says: home is where your heart is,
But what a shame,
'Cause everyone's heart,
Doesn't beat the same,
We're beating out of time

City of the dead,
At the end of another lost highway,
Signs misleading to nowhere,
City of the damned,
Lost children with dirty faces today,
No one really seems to care

I read the graffiti,
In the bathroom stall,
Like the holy scriptures in a shopping mall,
And so it seemed to confess,
It didn't say much,
But it only confirmed that,
The center of the earth,
Is the end of the world

And I could really care less

III. I DON'T CARE
I don't care if you don't,
I don't care if you don't,
I don't care if you don't care
I don't care if you don't,
I don't care if you don't,
I don't care if you don't care
I don't care if you don't,
I don't care if you don't,
I don't care if you don't care
I don't care if you don't,
I don't care if you don't,
I don't care if you don't care

Everyone Is So Full Of Shit!
Born and raised by hypocrites,
Hearts recycled but never saved,
From the cradle to the grave,
We are the kids of war and peace,
From Anaheim to the middle east,
We are the stories and disciples of,
The Jesus Of Suburbia

Land of make believe,
And it don't believe in me,
Land of make believe,
And I don't believe,
And I don't care!

IV. DEARLY BELOVED

Dearly beloved, are you listening?
I can't remember a word that you were saying,
Are we demented? Or am I disturbed?
The space that's in between insane and insecure

Oh therapy can you please fill the void?
Am I Am I retarded or am I just overjoyed?
Nobody's perfect and I stand accused,
For the lack of a better word, and that's my best excuse

V. TALES FROM ANOTHER BROKEN HOME
To live and not to breathe,
Is to die in tragedy,
To run, to run away,
To find what you believe,
And I leave behind,
This hurricane of fucking lies,
I lost my faith to this,
This town that don't exist

So I run,
I run away

To the light of masochists,
And I leave behind,
This hurricane of fucking lies,
And I walked this line,
A million and one fucking times,
But not this time

I don't feel any shame,
I won't apologize

When there ain't nowhere you can go,
Running away from pain,
When you've been victimized,
Tales from another broken home

You're leaving...
You're leaving...
You're leaving...
Ah you're leaving home...

"Everyone is so full of shit, born and raised by hypocrites..."

I love the energy he uses in that part of the song. Great choice for song of the week!

This is a grat song in terms of lyrics. I prefer Homecoming though, when it comes to 9 minute GD songs
924Nimrod
Story of my fucking life. I can't believe this hadn't been picked.

This song is beyond brilliant in my eyes or... ears XD. The lyrics are exceptional, I could never get tired of listening to it

To live and not to breathe,
Is to die in tragedy

I loved watching the music video for this song when it came out. Even though it is a long one, I still love listening to and playing this song.

Atticus Finch
Probably my favorite on the album. It's powerful.
Mr. Blobby
I love this song - everything about it.

My favourite line is "They say home is where your heart is but what a shame cos everyone's heart doesn't beat the same"

I remember the first time I cam home from University - it was after about 6 or 7 weeks of being there and after a day of being there I just thought this isn't my home anymore. I've moved on. I'm not going to move back in with my parents after uni and I'm not going back to my home town.

It was a really sad moment, but nearly 2 years later that statement hasn't changed.

Oooh. I'm going to listen to this song now!
Sean.
its not my favorite song off of American Idiot but i like it. it should be played more often on the radio

So, I chat on gay.com a lot, and my username there is JesusOfSuburbia. Every now and then I'll get some crazy ass self-hating god-fearing homophobic fag yelling at me, preaching at me, and outright freaking out and telling me off for using the name of the lord. They can't stop telling me how wrong I am for using it and they don't care that it's a song title, they just lash out at me, and then proceed to tell me they I, along with them and the rest of us chatting in there, are going to hell for our abominable sins. The last guy to go off on me followed up his rant by posting an invite in the main chat room inviting a group of guys to come to his place to fuck him.

HOLY. FREAKIN. CRAP.

Oh, and JOS is an amazing, brilliant masterpiece and is wonderfully enjoyable to play and sing.

Great song, actually it's more than great. Amazing. Alex, as usual, you did a fantastic job on the drums biggrin.gif My favourite part of the song would have to be 'City of the Damned' especially when it's live.

Hermione
^LEANNE! That is the greatest cover version of any song in history! Since I first came across that video I've watched it so many times, it always makes me smile. That kid is an inspiration.

woot.gif Whoa, so where do I even start with this song? It's a unique classic, I can barely begin to describe it. It's a fabulous mini rock opera that takes you through a whole story and range of emotions - it's honest and electrifying.
When Billie Joe performs it, you can see on his face how emotionally connected he is to it, and how proud he is - and damn right too. I love that they had the guts to just say fuck it and go for it on this song (and album), and the result is an epic masterpiece.

It contains my favourite 'American Idiot ' lyric
"It says 'Home is where your heart is'
But what a shame
'Cause everyone's heart doesn't beat the same"

wub.gif LOVE this song

(ps. the video totally sucks and doesn't do it justice whatsoever biggrin.gif)

Recently I wasn't able to listen to it since it moves me too much xD The most of the GD songs are very representative to me, but JoS is just incredible.

The motto was just a lie...
It says "Home is where your heart is"
But what a shame,
'Cause everyone's heart
Doesn't beat the same.
It's beating out of time...

I agree with you. The official video just doesn't work for me at at all. Too false and contrived. The live versions with Billie putting his heart and soul into it mean so much more.

The song itself is amazing, lyrically and musically. I never tire of hearing it- (preferably very loudly)

For what I think is the most passionate performance of all , I love this one even with the poor quality!
Its from Melbourne 2005 and is I think the last show of the A.I. tour. Billie's little introduction to the song and the emotion at the when he's tearfull just says it all mellow.gif

I couldn't get it to embed so here's the link

Jesus of Suburbia is the most beautiful piece of rock and roll I've ever heard, lived, and love with all of my heart and soul. Like most people commenting here, I could say so much about this song - I could write and write and still only touch upon the depths and intensity of it. Every line is written in fire, every word comes from a real place, and this song takes me to all of those places and shows me stuff that moves me to my core.
Jesus of Suburbia is not so much a song - or even a song-suite - as a symphony of many tones. The words shimmer facets, the lines move back and forth between one man's need to acknowledge the pain he's been thru and the other voice that just goes 'so what, shit happens'. "Running away from pain when you've been victimized" gets kicked in the teeth with "tales from another broken home". Just another story - it's no big deal. You can hear worse any day of the week from the couch of a talk-show, the kind of thing that fills up empty daytime hours with slices of domestic tragedy. Over and over, we hear these stories, we digest the stuff of peoples's lives like it was junkfood.
But this song says otherwise - this song is the voice of a great soul, broken into a million pieces but somehow holding together. A million pieces, a million colors, and the light shines thru it like a great stained glass window - and people hear it, and for each one, the light shines thru a different color. "That line is me", "that line helps me", "that line taught me", "that line says just what I've been thru".

I love this song.
