zomg yes. he's such a good writer. thumbsup.gif

Shane MacGowan easily trumps everyone else mentioned in this thread. Danzig comes in second.
anarchistloserkid
Tuomas Holopainen (Nightwish), Tim McIlrath (Rise Against), Dani Filth (Cradle of Filth), Thomas Barnett (Strike Anywhere), Claudio Sanchez (Coheed and Cambria).

Keep in mind that all I listen to is modern rock and metal, I'm sure there are great lyricists of decades ago, I just don't get into that kind of music.

And to anyone who said Billie Joe Armstrong - come fucking on. Green Day is cool but the lyrics are quite generic.

Some of them are pretty well done. Still don't like the band.

This may sound extremely conceited, but I think I am a goddamn fucking awesome lyricist. Read my thread. I write metal. I haven't written a punk song or a general rock song for a long ass time, the ones I did write I was much younger so I hate them now.

So the only thing I write is metal, but I think I do it damn well. Seriously though, check my thread and decide for yourself.

Lose.

Billie Joe's lyrics are incredibly poetic. They're basically the reason I still listen to Green Day.

The best lyricist ever is Chris Hannah from Propagandhi though, especially when you read the way he writes them out as transcripts, they're painfully moving and terrifyingly real.

QUOTE
America’s Army™ (Die Jugend Marschiert)

Welcome to the offices of Economic and Manpower Analyses here at our historic and sprawling West Point Academy campus! My name is Mindy! It is my distinct pleasure to introduce you to a loving father of three (and a champion of the sanctioned use of armed force in pursuit of policy objectives). Ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together for the project director of our newest recruitment strategy; our mission to staff future combat systems through current technologies. Without any further ado, I give to you Colonel Casey Wardynski!

(warm applause)

Thank you! Let me begin with some sentimental appeals to our national myths; assorted clichés coined by the state; the ideological shorthand meant to sweep your private doubts [away] of this virtual training course. This portal; this Trojan Horse that you living idiots paid for and actually rolled into your own kids’ rooms.

(stunned silence)

Oops, did I just say that out loud? Oh, well, it’s not like it’s something new. It’s just the logical extension of the decades of bilge water that you’ve let us pump into your homes. The pink noise that hums away in the background while you run the gauntlet we force on you everyday. The billowing candy floss that helps to soften the blow. Deep down you’ve always known that your children already belong to us, so why don’t you cut the outraged parent routine, shut your mouth and get back in your seat. Your children already belong to us. What are you? You will pass on. And they won’t know a fucking thing but this ‘community,’ this real life Ender’s Game. Forget what you think you know.

We are 138, we are 138, we are 138
We are 138, we are 138
In the eyes of tiger

Do you think were robot clean
Does this face look almost mean
Is it time to be an android not a man

The pleasantries are gone
Were stripped of all we were
In the eyes of tiger

We are 138, we are 138, we are 138

We walk the streets at night
We go where eagles dare
They pick up every movement
They pick up every loser
With jaded eyes and features
You think they really care

I aint no goddamn son of a bitch
You better think about it baby
I aint no goddamn son of a bitch
You better think about it baby, babe

An omelet of disease awaits your noontime meal
Her mouth of germicide seducing all your glands

I aint no goddamn son of a bitch
You better think about it baby
I aint no goddamn son of a bitch
You better think about it baby, babe

Lets test your threshold of pain
Lets see how long you last
Thats happened in your rape
On bosoms of your past

With jaded eyes and features
You think they really care
Lets go where eagles dare
Well go where eagles dare

I aint no goddamn son of a bitch
You better think about it baby
I aint no goddamn son of a bitch
You better think about it baby
I aint no goddamn son of a bitch
You better think about it baby
I aint no goddamn son of a bitch
You better think about it baby, hey

genius is right!

I agree the meanings are rather generic, but Billie Joe does have a talent for wording it well. He's got great rhyme scheme.

Camisado
Josh Pyke.

Sometimes I know I become
All that's weak in a man, and weak in a boy.
But I keep trying and I won't quit,
And that must be worth something more
Than a strong man who believes
That there's nothing left to try for.

Anyway, I have lots, but that I can think of right now: Eminem, Evanescence, Pink, Nightwish. Sixx: A.M. FTW! Nikki Sixx is a genious.
