The Doctor
I used to do Karate, but we had to give it up a year or two ago because mum couldn't afford it anymore (my brother started drums, boo). I was ok at it, I got to an orange belt (which is the third belt up) and I came second in a sparring competition (sparring is like unscripted fighting.. anything could happen!)

Ooh good stories from my Karate experiences:

When I was at a competition I was waiting for my next fight (I think it was the heat before the quater finals, so this fight was quite important) and the guy I was supposed to be sparring with had a bloody nose and he was crying and stuff (someone hit him really hard and got disqualified) and I was kneeling on the edge of the mat (you're supposed to) and his sensi was talking to him and they must have agreed he would fight. So the spar started and I tried to attack him a few times but he was doing pretty well blocking them, and then there's this hit where you sort of wrist flick them in the ear, and I did that and he just burst out crying and I was like blink.gif and then he went off and I won!! biggrin.gif By doing nothing, hehe.

Also on the way back from that competition on the bus, the people who had trophies (including me) were messing around with them and then almost all at the same time the little men on the top of the trophy snapped off! They were really crappy! So my mum had to sellotape it back on, hahaa
snaredrummer9
^hahaha that's funny! you made a guy cry...oh so great...

i use to be in Tae-Kwon-Do but there were so many sexists there. plus my mom got her arm broken and i wanted to play the drums instead...totally worth it!
goodday
Annie, haha smile.gif

I used to do Capoeira (brasilian martial art) for 8 years and I was a good athlete smile.gif

...and then Kung Fu for 5 years, I love it!!!
Morgaine
I do karate for 5 years and I love it, I couldn't live without it smile.gif

My friend does capoeira and he says this is one of the best martial arts ever. And that it's difficult to defend against someone attacing you using capoeira.
The Doctor
Oh and I forgot, SUMO WRESTLING!!!

Best sport ever. Me and my brother play it a LOT. It's very veyr interesting because sumo wrestlers have this thing called "zen" where they stare at eachother's eyes and then they lunge together because they botrh know when the other is going to strike. The jugde doesn't tell them to start, they decide to go together because of this zen energy they both feel which sort of tells them to go. It's so interesting.

Me and my brother set up a ring in the sitting room and we play it when mum's out so we don't get bollocked, because last time he accused me of cheating and then, er... lost a tooth... whistling.gif And we also play it in the sea on holiday, except it's like slow motion sumowrestling.

And what's not to love about two sweaty japanese men wrestling?
xbeautifulxdisasterx
well i used to do tae kwon do.

It was good fun, i miss it

Yeah, your friend is right about how is dificult to defend from someone fighting capoeira smile.gif I don't know if is one of the best martial arts ever, but is the only one where you play/fight with music and the music drives how fast the fight will be whistling.gif I love it!
Light My Fire
I tried Karate once, but I think I was too self concious, so I left
madie
I went to a class of kickboxing/karate because I friend really wanted me too. I hated it.
Jose Luis
i've always thought that i'm too delicate for karate and that stuff smile.gif

Isn't it difficult to synchronize with music?
Haushinka797979
I used to take kenpo, but had to quit because they kept breaching the contract (like adding kickboxing into the kenpo classes, putting white belts in the same classes as kids about to test for their black belt, etc). I was two belts away from being a black belt.

no, on the contrary: the music make us get the right time of the fight smile.gif Have different musics and lyrics that make us to know where the fight is going on....and in fact, the sounds of the instruments hypinotize us smile.gif

i just rememberd that my old tae-kwon-do instructor knows Chuck Noris smile.gif

A thread for those interested, or who take part in Martial Arts and Sumo.

how can you take both if you are taking sumo then you would have ro be fat and if you were fat then you can't martial arts
Amanda

Geez, great if you're into semantics ... shame it's not a sport though .
macu
i practise judo .
am i the only one??
Morgaine
Yay, yesterday, after half a year break, I finally went to my karate class again! I missed it so much. It was awesome to practice again.

Btw, does anyone here practice aikido?
Relavar
I use to be a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
Rita
I've been doing karate for about 3 years (don't do anymore). I loved that, but I had to give it up cause it was too expensive for my mom, and she refused to pay for it.
Morgaine
^ Aww sad.gif Aren't there cheaper classes or something? You should continue, if you liked it Rita...
Rita
^Aww, thank you Kasia. I dunno, I'd love to, but that's my senior year, and I'm leaving the city soon. Anyway, I want to get a brown belt. But I haven't practiced for some time, so I probably lost some of my skills and stuff. =]
Morgaine
So maybe you should check if there is any good/cheap sport club in that other city you go to...
What belt color do you have now?
Rita
Green. And you, btw?
Morgaine
Brown, but I think after that break I've had I'm actually worse than I should...
Oh, one more thing - which style do you practice? Shotokan? Since there're a few other.
Rita
Oooh, you're good. smile.gif Kyokushinkai.
Morgaine
Not that good as it sounds, but thanks biggrin.gif
Mhmmm, I do shotokan, but I've heard kyokushinkai is interesting too.
I'd like to take up aikido! That's why I asked if someone here do this. No reply, though sad.gif
Rita
You're welcome.
Well, my classmate practiced aikido (or maybe she's still doing, i dunno), and she liked it more than karate (which she tried before). I don't know why she thinks so, sorry. Btw, my ex - karate teacher is a champion of Europe. biggrin.gif *random*
Morgaine
Hmm... I wonder if it's more interesting than karate. I've heard it's more useful if you are attacked on a street, for example.

That's awesome woot.gif Hmm... speaking of karate masters, I've been to a seminar with Hidetaka Nishyama, he's Japanese and he has 9th dan. It was great to listen all of those things he knows about karate and fighting in general. Oh, but he practice shotokan, so you probably haven't heard of him smile.gif

Btw, it's okay that Amanda put karate and judo in the title of this thread, but t'ai chi? It's not a martial art!
Rita
Nah, t'ai chi is considered a soft martial art actually. Though that's much more like some fitness activity imo, e. g. yoga, well, meditation and other stuff. laugh.gif
Oh, and cool. smile.gif

Ew I don't know why, but I wouldn't call it a martial art... I mean, how you can use it do defend yourself?
You could only cause other person have a laugh attack when he's looking at you doing t'ai chi. No, I don't laugh at people doing this, since I understand the reason and all the philosophy coming with it, but there're people who just don't get it and then it makes them laugh. Maybe they could die of laughing haha.
No, I definitely don't think it's a martial art... yeah, I might be wrong.

EDIT: Damn, I just checked it in Wikipedia, and there's written that it's a martial art... dammit, I still don't agree.
Rita
Oh really? Wiki's always right. laugh.gif
Well, I don't really know. As it also says, t'ai chi promotes health, increases energy and strengthens body, and a good physical fitness is a important step towards self-defence. biggrin.gif
Morgaine
I don't like Wikipedia anymore.
Yes, I know it's an offtopic now.
To stay on topic: I'm going ay shotokan karate world cup soon! woot.gif As a viewer, obviously smile.gif
Rita
^When I read the first part of the sentence, I was like 'Woah' ohmy.gif but then I read it to the end... laugh.gif
That's still awesome though. I'd love to go too. Where and when will it take place? smile.gif
Morgaine
No, I'm not used to take part in major competitions biggrin.gif I do in some minor, organised in my city or somewhere near. Once I've taken part in Junior Poland Cup but I haven't done well. Obviously.
It's in Warsaw, Poland, that's the only reason I'm going there. Not too far away. And it's on 6th of October.
Rita
Damn school. I wish I could go there. But you're going to tell me about that, aren't you? biggrin.gif
Today I was randomly walking around the town and suddenly saw the ads of the karate club I used to go to. But it doesn't practice kyokushinkai anymore, but does seidokan. I didn't really know what that was so I tried to google it. And it tells me that's a style of aikido. What the fuck? mellow.gif
Morgaine
FUUUCK I can't go after all!
My parents are going to Zakopane (one of Polish cities) and I have to go with them!! Why the fuck, why... sad.gif sad.gif crying.gif crying.gif There's still small chance but I'd have to find another person who would take me to Warsaw (I don't live there)... dammit!

Ohh so maybe your club has changed? Did your coach know aikido? biggrin.gif
Rita
ohmy.gif sad.gif sad.gif
That sucks. Hope you'll find the way to go. Maybe any friend of yours would like to go together? Or ask parents, there's always a chance they change their mind.
Yeah, probably he does. But the ads used to say 'kyokushinkai'... I'm kinda confused. I think I'll phone there... someday and ask.
Morgaine
^ Yeah, theoretically I have my driving license, but my parents won't let me take their car... and none of my friends is interested in karate ad much as I am. And those who are, for some reason can't go too. Nope, my parents won't change their mind, they have a meeting with some friends there, about which I forgot. My fault, I guess sad.gif
Have you already called there? Write here what did they tell you once you call smile.gif
Rita
Oh, no, actually some girl (the secretary probably) answered the phone, and she didn't really tell me anything, but she said that was still 'karate-only' club. So I dunno... huh.gif
Morgaine
So maybe you've seen adverts of some other club and only the name was the same/similar? I dunno. But still, aikido would be nice to practice smile.gif
This thread seems to be only for the two of us haha.
Rita
Yeah, haha, I noticed that loooong ago. laugh.gif
Looks like no one else on this forum likes martial arts. Not really surprising though.
Nah, I probably read it wrong. I've heard there's a style of aikido 'seidokan' and the one of karate - 'seidokaikan' (or something like that, don't really remember). Well, at least that explains something. tongue.gif
meghann
im a black belt in tae kwon do but i havent gone for a while tho...but i love it...it really comes in handy biggrin.gif

Time to bump this thread smile.gif

So, I accidentally joined the judo club. Yeah, accidentally.
In my University there obviously is compulsory physical education. You can choose a sport you want to practice out of those suggested (for example swimming, basketball etc). On the list there also were "matrial arts" so of course, this is what I'd chosen. The description said that elements of karate, aikido, jujitsu, kendo and judo would be included. I really wanted to pracice aikido, so I thought it would be good to try there. I went for the first class... and I figured out that the coach is a judo coach, and she doesn't really know anything about other martial arts. Disappointed, that's how I feel sad.gif I've never wanted to do judo and now, when I tried, I really don't like it. Eww.
Bastard
Did jujitsu once. Wasn't that fun.
Sanah
Hmm... sumo wrestling.
You know, I've always wanted to tackle a really big, fat guy who was half-naked whilst in a ring to fight.
Rita

Ha! I've always thought karate is better! tongue.gif
JK.
I've never tried it and can't really judge...
But maybe if you joined some other club with a different coach, you'd like it?...
Morgaine
Because it is better!! So much better, I just realized it tongue.gif
I can't join another club, this club is kind of my compulsory sport class. So I can't find another coach, all I can do is changing it to swimming or something. But on the other hand, martial arts are the best sports ever, and I don't really feel like swimming every week or playing basketball or whatever... Dunno, I have to think it over smile.gif
Benji Ho
I'm currently a 1st Dan black belt at ITF Tae Kwon Do, i would be a 2nd Dan now if i never missed so much training due to exams ><" but meh I got next year... =P

I use to do Judo, but i only trained for like 2 months then left because it just never appealed to me..

Anyone here do TKD as well?
