More so because I hate the ridiculous stereotypes and misconceptions that go around.
That is so true. Alot of Catholics themselves dont really understand the faith of Catholosism. I only became Catholic 6 years ago, and have since been envolved in a Bible study that has educated me alot on scripture. It is through the bible study that I have come to truely understand the Catholic Church and all their rituals. It's not made up stuff, it's rooted in the Old Testament. The mass has so much more meaning to me now that I understand more about the Old Testament.
People often think that Catholics are errogant or intolerant, etc.., but the Church simply holds on to old traditions that aren't meant to be broken. I must admit though, I've broken plenty. I mean come on, where would we be without artifical birth control

If we weren't sinners, why would we need Jesus to come into the world on this day for forgiveness

That is one of their rules that I find ridiculous.
My grandma was such a devout Catholic (she wanted to be a freaking nun) and wouldn't use birth control, she had way more kids than she could afford.

Most Catholics don't. When I was in elementary school the other parents would talk shit about my mom because she was a Catholic with only one child. She was really pissed off about that, like "excuse me, forgive me for not being rich enough to raise 9 kids".

Dec 25 2007, 01:33 PM
Yeah, thankfully most Catholics don't really listen to that rule. My mom's Catholic and she thinks its bull. Then again, she's really only a Catholic by name as she disagrees with a lot of stuff in the church. She goes to church every week because she finds it relaxing, and she believes in God, but she doesn't have a problem with birth control, sex before marriage, and she's pro-choice.

I was baptised as a baby but refused getting confirmed when everyone else was around age 14. Some just did it cause they get presents, which is stupid, getting confirmed is always gonna be a religious thing no matter how you put it. If you're not christian I don't think you should get confirmed. I'd feel so fake and wrong if I did. I consider myself atheist.

Baptized Protestant as an infant, raised atheist [by default, seeing as I was ignorant of the existence of religion], started going to a religious school at age 11 and went through the motions of religion just to fit in with my peers. Forced to go to church by age 12, hated religion [passionately] until I was about 16ish. Hit rock-bottom in pretty much every aspect of my life and finally came to terms with God by 16-17. I was pretty zealous in my pursuit to become closer to God until I was about 18, and then life just started to become a huge distraction and I hadn't had much time to really focus. At some point, I had acknowledged that I believe God is real and that I wasn't going to limit God to any one religion, because He can't be bound by human means. Took a few religious classes last semester to help me better understand the religion I AM associating myself with- Lutheranism, and decided that this religion is what closely fits my beliefs and morals. I disagree on some points but I'm not about to throw out the whole religion because of that.
I still strongly dislike my church, though. I don't have a problem with worshiping and such, but churches give me a bad feeling. I always feel like there are a thousand eyes looking at me and judging me, when from my vantage point as an outsider, I can clearly see everything they should be judged for themselves. It's all gossip-fests, secret scandals, unspoken contests to see who can out-do the rest in terms of good works and having the "perfect" life/family/etc and all that jazz. I just don't want to surround myself with all that negativity and then stand there amongst them and worship God... it just seems so fake.

I was baptized and raised as a Christian... or Episcoplian to be exact. We didnt go to church much cuz my mom was an artist and was always working but we still did our things. Prayers and believing that if you help yourself that God will help you. I never really understood why I went along with it and eventually decided that I am not Christian because I dont believe in it.
My boyfriend isnt Christian either and my family used to really dislike him for it. When I told my mom about a year ago that I'm not Christian (it took me awhile to figure out how to tell her, but it came into a conversation like anything else we talk about.), she thought my boyfriend was influencing me to not be Christian anymore. I told her that it wasnt so... the rest is history.
But lately, I have been studying the Pagan religion... most specifically Wicca because it seems so peaceful and thats what I want in my life is Peace! I want a religion that makes me happy to be alive or can help me find that peace. But if paganism isnt that religion for me or even for that reason... then I dont know.
