Angels & Airwaves
We Don't Need To Whisper

Submitted by: Andy

With Blink-182 on "indefinite hiatus," the members of the band have gone their separate ways. Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker joined up with former Get The Girl member Carroll Heller to create "Plus-44," and front man Tom DeLonge called on some friends to establish a new project that would end up being called "Angels & Airwaves." Members include Atom Willard (Rocket From the Crypt, The Offspring) on drums, Ryan Sinn (The Distillers) on bass, David Kennedy (Hazen Street, Box Car Racer) on guitar, and of course Tom DeLogne (Blink-182, Box Car Racer) on vocals and guitar.

DeLonge, who has always been a huge fan of outer space and a monstrous war buff, used these as muses for most of the albums lyrical inspiration. Tom spent a lot of time listening to "the greatest songs ever" by Pink Floyd, Queen, The Police, The Cure, and U2. These are clearly reflected in the album, with a lot of guitar rock sounding like U2's work, and the correlating full-length motion picture (completely CGI) being released in synch with the album ala "The Wall" by Pink Floyd. It is allegedly based on Tom's life and correlates it with World War II. Very little is known about it at this point.

The swirling rumors of why Blink-182 broke up are many, but the obvious one is creative priority. Mark and Travis were content on building Blink-182 up and letting it evolve on it's own, but Tom wanted to make the best music in the world, and he knew he couldn't do it with Mark and Travis. Why, I don't know. Creative control, maybe. But he's publicly stated that he loves them both like brothers still, and misses them. However, the music inspired by this breakup has led to the best music Tom has ever made.

To sum up the album in one word is "rich." This is a very rich album, thick, very full. Every song has hundreds of layers and effects that make the listener feel like they're flying through the air. The full effect of the airborne-nature of the CD is best experienced through headphones in a dark room. Every song is at least 4 minutes long, and the 10-track We Don't Need To Whisper clocks in at 51 minutes exactly. Not the longest album, but every song is a blast and worth listening to over and over.

I think the thing with this album is inconsistency. Some of the songs ("The Adventure", "A Little's Enough") are truly amazing, but there are tracks that sound like Blink's cast-offs ("The Gift", "Good Day").

It's a shame, because if all the songs were as good as the first two I mentioned, it'd be a classic.

this album would be good if it didn't have tom delonge singing on it. his voice is too nasaly and pop-punkish for this sort of music.

Totally agree with you
Anyways, even though the people in the band are dicks *cough*TomDelonge*cough* (IMG:style_emoticons/dark/wink.gif)
it's a great album and they are great live, except for when they preach... (IMG:style_emoticons/dark/down.gif)
Anyways, I do think that it's one of the most important albums of 2006.

It does sound pretty cool in the dark.

This album is pretty good. If the rest of the album were like The Adventure and It Hurts, it would be a five star for sure. I notice that it does get a bit repetitive though. I also noticed it sounds a lot like Boxcar Racer.

I really like Blink 182. The Angels and Airwaves album I also really enjoyed. Some of the songs do sound like the Blink songs but I like that. (IMG:style_emoticons/dark/biggrin.gif) I think that Angels and Airwaves is a really good band and I like this album.(IMG:style_emoticons/dark/thumbsup.gif) The Adventure is a really good song it's one of my favorites. I love listening to that song. Anyways I think it's a pretty good album.

I got the CD not to long ago for my bday.
And i wasnt sure if i was gonna like it. I do like Blink but not alot.
All i knew that Tom from Blink and Atom from Offsrping & Rocket from the crypt is in the band.
I did want the CD cept i heard it was like space-ish and maybe a bit emo.
So i lsiten to it at night. And it was amazing.
Its a great cd. Now i got The Adventure vid on my iPod.
They kinda remind me of a 'harder' verison of Snow Patrol.
Plus with a drop of emo flavor and Alterantive beats

I think The Adventure is definately the best song alongside A little's Enough and It Hurts (IMG:style_emoticons/dark/smile.gif) I didnt really listen to much of Blink so although I can see similarities its still great
Overall an Awesome album (IMG:style_emoticons/dark/biggrin.gif)
Oh yea...and that review was awesome...it really is great listening in the dark.

It is probaly one of the best albums I've heard in awhile. It's certainly not what a blink fan expects but it's still very good. 9/10.

When I first got this album, it's all I listened to for a week. (IMG:style_emoticons/dark/biggrin.gif)
It's definately not Blink 182, but I still like it.
My only problem is that there's not a lot of variety. (IMG:style_emoticons/dark/confused.gif)
But it's good, nonetheless.

Angels And Airwaves are awesome but blink- 182 is better
Tom DeLonge is a really great singer and performer in AVA
but he was way better in blink- 182

that cd is great but AVA will never be Blink-182. if tom wanted to get somewhere with his music, his best bet would hav been to stay with blink....still, tom is a great vocalist and it definetly shows in this album.

Both their albums are a perfect 10. theres more variety on the second album, I-Empire, but WDNTW is more rock, I think. The reason a lot of people don't like it is because they are blink-182 fans, and they can't let anything go, and 2nd is that they expect it to sound a lot like blink but it doesn't . Tom hasn't gotten more mature, but his music has. I watched the Start The Machine documentary and he hasn't changed a bit since blink, so I hate when people say he did.

I listen to this album quite often. I remember when I first The Adventure by them, I was really turned off. I don't know what changed my mind but now I can't stop listening to them.
